A FATAL ACCIDENT - On the 13th of April, while engaged in hauling rails on his father's farm, David, son of George Henry and Susanna Culp, of Olive township, Elkhart Co., Ind., was thrown from the wagon and almost instantly killed, having his head crushed in by striking against some sharp projectile and the wagon wheel striking his head. The fatal accident happened about noon, and just how it occurred exactly, will probably never be known, though his father saw him fall from the wagon, while standing at the house: The supposition is that the boy, after unloading and when returning to the house, drove the horses pretty fast down the lane, and they became unmanageable. Arriving at the gate, which has a patent arrangement that the wheel strikes and opens the gate, the boy who was sitting on the reach of the wagon was thrown off, his head coming in contact with a stone, and at the same time the hind wheel must have struck the back of his head, as it was smashed in, and there was also a hole in his forehead. The team ran out to the main road and was not stopped until they came within a short distance of Wakarusa. The boy was taken up by his father and carried to the house, when he died in less than two hours, aged 14 years, 6 months and 29 days. Just two weeks previous deceased and his brother Noah were out in the woods trying to cut down a tree which had lodged in cutting it, when suddenly it came down, catching Noah's leg and breaking it, pinning him to the ground, until David, after 15 minutes hard labor, succeeding in freeing him, not dreaming of the sad fate that should soon befall himself. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at Shaum's meeting house. Services by Peter Lehman and Noah Netzler.
OBITUARY - Anna Lehman was born in Conemaugh Twp., Somerset county, Pa., on the 10th of December, 1805, and died in Paint Twp., Somerset County, on the 21st of February, 1888, aged 82 years, 2 months and 11 days. She lived in matrimony 53 years. Her descendants number 14 children, 102 grand children and 102 great grand children and 2 great-great-grandchildren, in all 220. She was a widow 16 years, 3 months and 20 days, and was a member in the Dunkard church and proved to be faithful to the end. Some time before she died she was anointed with oil, for she said we need all to be saved. In the morning of her death, at 4 o'clock she said it was time to go home. When she was asked where her home was, she lifted her hands toward heaven and smiled, and soon afterwards she died, as we hope, in Jesus, and is now at rest in the land of the blessed. KAUFFMAN - On the 13th of April, near Nappanee, Ind., Hannah, wife of Emanuel Kauffman, aged 56 years. She leaves a husband and four children to mourn her death. She was a devoted Christian and a faithful member of the Amish Mennonite church. She bore her sickness of four months with patience, and said she was ready to die and had a great desire to leave this world. She bid her family farewell the day before she died. CULP -On the 2d day of April, in Harrigon Twp., Elkhart Co., Ind., Celesta Lucretia, only daughter of Joel and Lydia Culp, aged 1 year, 6 months and 28 days. This is now the third of their children that have died, and at about the same age; two sons and one daughter, leaving them without any children. Services at Yellow Creek from Job 14:10. The sorrowing parents can comfort their hearts with the thought that their children are safe in the arms of Jesus.
ENGEL - On the 14th of March, near Panola, Woodford Co., Ill., of erysipelas and old age, John Engel, at the advanced age of 86 years, 10 months and 6 days. He was born in Lorraine, France, in 1801, emigrated to America in 1830, lived in Pennsylvania 6 months, then moved to Butler Co., Ohio, and from there to Illinois. He was one of the very early settlers in Woodford county, and traveled on foot from Ohio to Illinois. He was married to Barbara Detweiler, who died June 10, 1874. He was buried on Friday the 16th. Services were held at Danver's School House in German and English by E.M. Hartman, from Rev. 14:13. The remains were interred in the Bachman cemetery, 2 miles east of Woodford station. He leaves one sister, seven children, nineteen grandchildren and many friends and relatives to mourn his departure. He was a member of the Amish Mennonite church for about 70 years, and of late years often expressed himself willing to die and go home to rest.
WEBER - On the 19th of March, near Shiremanstown, Cumberland Co., Pa., very suddenly, Sister Susan, wife of Pre. Henry Weber, aged 53 years and 5 months. Buried on the 23d at Slate Hill Mennonite meeting house in presence of a large concourse of relatives and friends. Sister Weber had been complaining for some time but was able to attend her household duties, and retired in the evening in her usual health. Shortly after her husband noticed her breathing was unnatural, he spoke to her and she answered. He arose and got a light, when he found her unconscious. A physician was summoned and she recovered. About 12 o'clock she had a paralytic stroke, but remained conscious to within a short time of her death, which occurred about two o'clock. She told her husband and children present that she was going and admonished them to meet her there. Surely in the midst of life we are in death.
HESS - On the 2d of April, near Mechanicsburg, Pa., after an illness of only a few days, Bro. Samuel Hess, aged 69 years, 7 months and 29 days. Buried on the 5th at St. John's Lutheran church. He leaves a wife and two children who deeply mourn his loss.
NUSBAUM - On the 3d of April, near Middlebury, Ind., of inflammation of the bowels, Vernon Ray, son of William and Salome Nusbaum, aged 3 months and 20 days. Buried in the Forest Grove burying ground. Services by D.P. Johns from Matt. 19:13-15.
KAUFFMAN - On the 8th of April, near Middlebury, Ind., Sarah Ann, daughter of Jacob Kauffman, aged 24 years and 19 days. Sarah was subject to fits, and on the morning of the 7th her step-mother went to the spring house, but hearing a noise, ran back quickly and found poor Sarah lying by the side of the stove in a fit and an iron pot which had been on the stove, full of boiling water, by her side. The water being poured over her breast in the fall, scalded her so badly that she died from the effects in about 24 hours. She accepted Jesus as her Savior some years ago, and seemed to be willing to do all she could, so we trust she has had her evil days. Buried on the 9th; services by C. Miller and D.J. Johns, from Isa. 35:10.
SCHMIDT - On the 6th of April, near Blanchard River, Putnam Co., Ohio, of measles and membraneous croup, Christian, son of Bro. George and Nancy Schmidt, aged 3 years, 5 months and 6 days. Services by H. H. Good from 2 Sam. 12:23.
HARSHBARGER - On the 6th of April, in the railroad hospital at Patterson, Pa., Christian D. Harshbarger, lately of Mattawana, Mifflin Co., Pa., aged 24 years, 5 months and 2 days. Our young friend died from injuries received while acting as an employee on a freight train on the Pennsylvania R.R.

HOSTETLER - On the 28th of February, in Menno Twp., Mifflin Co., Pa., Leah Hostetler, aged 75 years, 11 months and 27 days.
LORE - On the 4th of April, in Conemaugh Twp., Somerset Co., Pa., Isaac J., son of Jacob and Catharine Lore, aged 4 years, 4 months and nineteen days. Buried in the Kauffman graveyard on the 6th. Services by Jonathan Harshberger.
LEHMAN - On the 6th of April, in Paint Twp., Somerset Co., Pa., Henry Lehman, aged 80 years, 8 months and 24 days. Buried on the 8th. Services by Hiram Musselman and Jacob Holsapple.
LIVINGSTONE - On the 8th of April, in Grubtown, Cambria Co., Pa., Mary Livingstone, aged 39 years, 2 months and 18 days. Buried on the 10th. She told her children to meet her in heaven. Some time before her death her infant child died, and also her father and now she is called away from her husband and children. Her mother is also sick at present.
RULE - On the 9th of April, 1888, in Harrison Twp., Elkhart Co., Ind., of consumption, Bro. George Rule, aged 31 years, 4 months and 12 days. He was buried at Yellow Creek meeting house on the 11th. Services by N. Metzler, B. Burkett and ? from Matt. 24:44. Bro. Rule had for many years been conscious of the necessity of a Christian life, but it seemed that his faith was not strong enough to bring him fully to the feet of Jesus until a short time before his death, when he obtained peace with God and rejoiced in hope. He was baptized some hours before his death, and manifested a full resignation to God, and had a desire to depart and be with Christ. The sorrowing companion feels her severe loss deeply, but He who has promised to be the widow's stay and a father to the fatherless, will also sustain and bless her. Let us only trust and be faithful to him.
LAWRENCE - On the 13th of January, in Olathe Twp., Johnson county, Kansas, quite suddenly, Molly, wife of James Lawrence, in the 39th year of her age. She was buried on the 15th in the Olathe graveyard. Services by Isaac Reist. She was beloved for her piety ad kindness and will be sadly missed, not only by her husband and 6 children (of whom the youngest was only three weeks old at the time of her death), but also by a great many friends. She formerly lived in Iowa.
FRITZ - On the 31st of March, in Gardner Twp., Johnson county, Kansas, Abram Fritz, in the 60th year of his age. Buried in the Olathe graveyard on the 1st of April. Services by A.V. Stout.
DETWEILER - On the 1st of April, in Cincinnati, Ohio, suddenly, John Detweiler, aged 27 years, 11 months and 26 days. He was buried on the 3rd in Cincinnati. Deceased was a nephew of M.B. and J. Weaver of Elkhart county, Ind., and leaves a widow and many friends to mourn his early departure.
KURTZ - On the 25th of March, near Thompsontown, Juniata county, Pa., of apoplexy, Samuel J. Kurtz. He was sick only one week. Buried in the Delaware graveyard, where many friends and neighbors had assembled. Services by Jacob and William Graybill.
PAGE - April 7th, near Port Royal, Juniata county, Pa., of pneumonia, Elizabeth, widow of Jacob Page, aged 64 years, 2 months and 1 day. Buried at Lost Creek. Services by William Graybill and John Bair, from John 11:25.
MILLER - On the 18th of April, in Newton Co., Ind., of heart disease, _____, wife of Joseph B. Miller, aged 40 years, 5 months and 25 days. She leaves her husband and 5 children, the youngest but two months old, to mourn her departure. On the Sunday preceding her death she was well and attended divine services, and on Wednesday she was already in her coffin. Her suffering was of short duration, but were very severe. She was buried on the 19th in Miller's graveyard. Services by D. Hochstetler and Isaac Tschubb. Peace to her ashes.
HEATWOLE - On the 14th of April, in Goshen, Indiana, of old age and lingering weakness, Dr. Henry Heatwole, aged over 75 years. The deceased was born and brought up in Rockingham county, Va. He was the last survivor of the family of David Heatwole, who emigrated from Pennsylvania to Virginia among the first Mennonite people that settled in the Shenandoah Valley. The descendants of this family are numerous, and are scattered in nearly all the States from Virginia westward to California. Dr. Heatwole was actively and successfully engaged in the practice of medicine until a few years since, when because of advancing age he was compelled to withdraw in part from active life. He was held in high esteem by those who knew him intimately, and his life was such as to give evidence of true Christian sincerity. He was a member of the Reformed Mennonite church, and his funeral services were held by John Mauk, of Deyton, Ohio.

FATAL ACCIDENT - On the 24th of April while three men work engaged in tearing down an old barn owned by D.D. Hershberger in Elk Lick Township, Somerset Co., Pa., Daniel Shoemaker was accidentally struck by a falling girder and knocked to the ground. When he was lifted up by his fellow workmen it was found that he could not speak, his skull being fractured and his jaw bone broken. He died in a few minutes. His remains were interred on the 26th. Services by Jonas Blauch of Johnstown, Pa. The church was crowded to its utmost capacity while a number were compelled to remain outside. The deceased was aged 37 years, 3 Mos. 22 days, and leaves a wife and 5 children. He was a member of the Mennonite Church. Brother Daniel had many warm friends, and was highly respected by all who knew him, and his sudden death has cast a gloom over the entire neighborhood. While we are sorely grieved by his departure, we hope that it is his eternal joy, and we also trust that those who are living so careless spiritually, may pause and reflect, and make their peace with God and be prepared to meet the Son of Man; for He "cometh in an hour that ye think not." OBITUARY - Magdalena Stauffer, daughter of Abraham and Madgalena Ramer, was born in Dauphin County, Pa., June 8th, 1796, moved with her parents to Markham, York County, Ontario, about 1800, was married to Christian Stauffer April 15, 1823. They were the parents of 8 children, 5 of whom are still living, 27 grand-children and 31 great-grand-children. Her brother, Peter Ramer of Markham is in his 89th year. They moved from Stoufferville to Blenheim, Oxford County, in October, 1848. She resided for that last year with her youngest daughter and the previous 11 years in the State of Michigan with her oldest daughter. She died in Bayham Twp., April 2, 1888, aged 91 years, 9 months and 25 days. She had been a member of the Mennonite Church over 65 years. She was buried April 5th, at the Mennonite Church in Blenheim. Funeral services were held by J. Nahrgang in German and by D.B. Sherk in the English Language. Thus has mother, grand-mother and great-grand-mother gone before us. Who among us will be the next to follow her?
LEHMAN - April 12th, in Mahoning county, O., Nancy, widow of Samuel Lehman, aged 68 years, 1 month and 29 days. Services were held at Bixler's church by Jacob Kurtz and Abm. Brubacher.
METZLER - April 26th, in Columbiana Co., O., Martin Metzler, aged 67 years, 3 months and 21 days. He was buried at Nold's church, in the presence of a large assemblage, where funeral services were held by Abraham Brubacher, Jacob Stauffer, and J.H. Bomberger. The deceased suffered intense pain during the last few days of his illness and had a prayerful desire to be released. He selected his own pall-bearers, and also named the ministers he desired to officiate at his funeral.

STAUFFER - On the 2d of May, near Bachmansville, Lebanon county, Pa., Sister Kate, wife of Bro. Isaac Stauffer, aged 40 years, 9 months and 1 day. She was buried on the 5th at Stauffer's meeting-house, where many friends assembled to pay their last respect. Text, Job. 19:25.
STAUFFER - April 13th in East Donegal township, Lancaster county, Pa., of apoplexy, Sister Anna H. Stauffer, aged 62 years, 5 months and 28 days. Buried on the 17th in the family graveyard. Text, Rev. 14:13. A large congregation assembled in respect for the beloved sister. Sister Stauffer was an ornament to the Church.
ORTWEIN - May 2d near Blake, Ont., of consumption Sister Sarah, wife of Henry Ortwein and only daughter of Bro. and Sister Henry and Elizabeth Otterhein, aged 28 years and 6 months. She leaves a husband, one infant son, parents and three brothers and many near and dear friends, but the Savior seemed nearer and dearer to her than all these, and he loved her better than all our loved combined. We have the blessed hope that it is well with her, funeral on 4th. Services by H.B. Detweiler and N. Stauffer.
GEHMAN - On the 30th of April, Mary, wife of Abraham Gehman dec., of Rock Hill, Bucks Co., Pa., aged 82 years, 4 months and 21 days. Buried on the 5th in the Line Lexington Mennonite graveyard. Hers was a short illness. She took sick Sunday and died Monday.
WEABER - On the 8th of May, in Olive township, Elkhart Co., Ind., of heart disease, Henry M. Weaber, aged 67 years, 6 months and 29 days. He was buried on the 11th at Shaum's burying-ground, where a large number of friends and relatives were present. He leaves a sorrowing companion and eleven children to mourn their loss. FELPEL - On the 21st of April, in Lancaster Co., Pa., Sister Elizabeth, wife of William Felpel, aged 53 years, 3 months and 19 days. She was buried on the 24th at the Mechanics Grove Meeting-house. Services by Isaac Eby and Elias Grove, from Ps. 23. Her remains now rest by the side of her son who died on the 31st of December 1886 from an operation of a rupture performed on him in the Dayton, Ohio, hospital. His age was 25 years, 4 months and 12 days, and funeral services were held by John Brubacher from Luke 7:14. The deceased sister leaves her husband and 6 children.
REPLOGLE - In Warren township, St. Joseph county, Ind., of the infirmities of old age, Elizabeth, wife of Daniel Replogle, aged 85 years, 4 months. Services by _____ Gettig from the following: "Let me die the death of righteous, and let my last end be like his."
BORNTREGER - On the 26th of April, in Newbury Twp., LaGrange Co., Ind., of measles and lung fever, Barbara, daughter of John E. and Barbara Borntreger, aged 1 year, 10 months and 27 days. After 11 days of suffering the Lord took her into rest, although all that skill and affection could do were done to keep her here. She was buried on the 27th. Services by Eli Borntreger and D.S. Kauffman from Matt. 18:1-5 and Mark 10:13-31.
MISHLER - On the 27th of April, in Eden Twp., LaGrange Co., Ind., of Croup, Polly, daughter of Jacob and Sarah Mishler, aged 5 years, 9 months and 4 days. Buried on the 28th. Services by Eli and Manassas Borntreger from Matt. 18:1-5 and Mark 10:13-16.
MISHLER - On the 3d of March, in the same family, of the same sickness, Daniel Mishler, aged 18 years, 2 months and 19 days. During his illness he felt the need of a change of heart. He also requested to be baptized, which was administered by J.J. Weber. This is another earnest call to the rising generation. He was buried on the 4th. Services by Peter Lehman and J.J. Weber from Luke 14:10-20 and 27, and Rom. 12:1, 2.
HERNLEY - April 12th, near Manheim, Lancaster county, Pa., of apoplexy, Bro. Samuel Hernley, aged 70 years and 9 months. Buried on the 16th at Hernley's meeting-house. Text, Gen. 27:2. Bro. Hernley was a very quiet and inoffensive man.
