GOSHEN — Howard H. Charles, 86, of 1530 Sycamore Court, died at 3:30 a.m. Saturday (March 16, 2002) in Greencroft Terraces Healthcare.
He was born on July 19, 1915 in Lititz, Pa., to Christian and Ellen (Hess) Charles. He married Miriam J. Stalter on July 19, 1947, in Elida, Ohio. She survives with two sons. J. Robert (Sylvia) Charles, Goshen and Thomas K. (Kristine) Charles, State College. Pa.; one sister, Anna Mae Fretz, Vineland, Ontario, Canada; and five grandchildren.
One daughter. Ruth Ann Charles, and one brother J. Wilbur Charles, preceded him in death.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm. Monday at the Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in East Goshen Mennonite Church. The Rev. Steve Slagel will officiate. There will be a family graveside service at Violett Cemetery prior to the memorial service.
Mr. Charles was a professor of New Testament at Goshen College and Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary from 1947 until his retirement in 1989. Prior to his teaching career in Indiana, he was ordained and served as pastor of the Lititz Mennonite Church from 1943 to 1947.
He served in teaching assignments under the Mennonite Board of Missions in Japan in 1961 and Ghana, West Africa, in 1973 and 1974. For more than 30 years he contributed monthly essays on biblical themes to Builder, a resource for adult Sunday School teachers produced by Mennonite Publishing House Scottdale, Pa. He also served as the first New Testament editor of Believers Church Bible Commentary series.
Mr. Charles studied at Eastern Mennonite College and completed his undergraduate studies at Goshen College in 1940. He also received degrees from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond. Va., and Princeton Theological Seminary. From 1950 to 1952, he studied at New College in Edinburgh, Scotland, and earned a doctor of philosophy degree in New Testament from there in 1958. He was Fellow at Mansfield College in Oxford, England, in 1965 and 1966.
He was a member of Fast Goshen Mennonite Church.
Memorials may be given to Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary or Mennonite Board of Missions.

Clemmer, Cleason M. 79 of Newton, Ontario died July 20, 2002, at Listowel Memorial Hospital. Son of Leander and Lovina (Martin) Clemmer. He was the husband of Susannah (Martin) Clemmer.
Dear father of Ronald and Sherrin Clemmer of Newton, Richard and Ruth Clemmer and Raymond and Heather Clemmer, all of Elmira. Dear grandfather of Jeffrey Clemmer, Ryan and Alison Clemmer and step-grandfather of Mark and Grant Beeler. Brother of Vernon and Mary Clemmer of Elmira, Viola Bauman of Hawkesville, Ermina and Earl Frey of Mitchell, Manitoba, Lloyd and Minerva Clemmer of Linwood, Vera and Wilfred Martin of RR 2, Alma, Lorene and Glen Schreiber of Hawkesville and brother-in-law of Elsie Clemmer of Milverton. following a brief illness.

she was the daughter of Ephriam and Anna (Goldsmith) Rufenacht.
In
1938, she married John Crossgrove, who died in 1962. A lifelong
resident of.
the area, she was a homemaker and worked in food service and
housekeeping at
Four County Joint Vocational School, Fairlawn Haven, Sauder
Woodworking, and
Sauder Village. She volunteered at Care & Share Thrift Shop and Wyse Commons
and was a quilter at Sauder
Village. She was a
member
of Central
Mennonite Church,
Mennonite Women and Golden Age Sewing of the church.
Surviving
are three sons, Ronald (Patricia), Wauseon; Roger (Mabelann), Archbold;
and
Robert (Ruth), Silver Springs,
Md.; two daughters, Mrs.
Russell
(Ruth Ann) McQuillin and Mrs. James (RoseMary) Rupp, Archbold; and 10
grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

were at 2 p.m. Sunday in Central
Mennonite Church.

member.

Sauder and Rev. Fred W. Martin officiating. Burial was in adjoining
cemetery, Paradise Mennonite Church Cemetery.

Sarah L. Derstine, 85, of Franconia Township, Bucks County, PA died Aug. 1, 2002 in Phoebe Richland Health Care Center, Richlandtown. PA. Born in Franconia Township, she was a daughter of the late Jacob F. and Emma N. (Landis) Gehman.
She was a member of Franconia Mennonite Church and attended Haycock Mennonite Church, Quakertown, PA

Eberly, Reuben W., 86, of Fayetteville, PA died Saturday, March
9, 2002, in Chambersburg Hospital. He was born March 24, 1915, in
Fayetteville, [PA] a son of the late Reuben B. and Naomi Zimmerman
Eberly. He was married to Miriam Baer Eberly for 65 years. He was a
member of Spring Valley Mennonite Fellowship, Chambersburg, PA.
Survived by his wife Miriam and four sons, Eugene, Gerald and Daniel,
all of Fayetteville, PA and Duane of Ontario, Ore.; seven daughters,
Audrey J. Clugston of Bluford, IL; Phyllis Troyer of Greenwood, Del;
Marie Keim of Fayetteville, PA; Wilma Zehr and Kaye Martin, both of
Halsey, OR; Barbara Schuler of Marietta, PA; Betty Hostetter of
Dongola, IL, a brother, Paul Z. of Chambersburg, PA; 57 grandchildren;
and 80 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and son in law Thomas
Clugston.
Funeral service was March 13, 2002 at Spring Valley Mennonite
Fellowship, Chambersburg, PA. Bishop Melvin Horst, Bishop John Baer,
Minister Kenneth Lehman and Deacon Omar Eby will officiate at services.
Burial will be in Chambersburg Mennonite Cemetery.

WAKARUSA -- Friends of
Russell B. Eby
will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and one hour before
the funeral service at 1 p.m. Saturday, all held at Olive Mennonite
Church in Elkhart. The Rev. Russell Krabill and
Pastor Dan Miller will officiate followed by burial at Olive West
Cemetery.
Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret-Lienhart Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Eby, 91, of 27841 S.R. 119, died at 3:12 p.m. Tuesday (May 7, 2002)
at Elkhart General Hospital, where he had been a patient since April 24
with congestive heart failure.
He was born July 16, 1910, in Olive Township to Mervin and Goldie
(BeMiller) Eby. On Dec. 22, 1931, he married Ellen Christophel in
Washburn, Ill., and she died April 6, 1989. He married Mary L. Leichty
on Feb. 10, 1990, and she survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Mrs. James (Jeanette) Hostetler of
West Liberty Ohio; a son, Clare of Littlefork, Minn.; one stepson,
James (Kathy) Leichty of Goshen; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Roger (Rachel)
Pittman of Nappanee and Janice Leichty of Phoenix; two grandchildren;
two great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; five
step-great-grandchildren; and two: brothers, Everett and Wayne, both of
Elkhart.
Three sisters, Vada Fink, Esther Wenger and Helen Grabill, are deceased.
Mr. Eby co-owned Lookwell Dairy in Elkhart until 1955 and moved to
Minnesota.
He lived and farmed there for 28 years before moving again to Ohio. He
returned to Elkhart County in 1990.
He was a member of South Union Mennonite Church in West Liberty, Ohio,
and several pilots' clubs in Elkhart.

death on Jan. 16, 1998.

resident of the Wauseon area since 1952; she was a secretary for the
former
Fetterman Plumbing & Heating, Wauseon, for 25 years, and since was
a
housekeeper at the Exit 3 Motel, Wauseon.
She
was a member of the
Central
Mennonite Church,
Archbold.
She
is survived by one son, Rick (Rosemary) Fetterman, Delta; two
daughters, Mrs.
William (Joan) Grieser, Wauseon, and Jane Fetterman, Delta; five

Foster,
John C., 46, of
Springdale, AR died January 9, 2002 at Springdale, AR of a heart
attack. He was born July 23, 1955 at Harvey, IL to Richard &
Rose (Bringe) Foster. On April 9, 1983 he was married to Kathleen
K. Foster, who survives.
The funeral was held January 12, 2002 at Kern Road Mennonite Church,
South Bend, IN. Cremated, no burial.
He was a member of Mennonite Church USA.

H. Frey, 86, Archbold, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Toledo
Hospital, where
he was a patient two weeks. He became ill in
Kissimmee

Fla.

while preparing for the annual auction of Yoder & Frey, Inc., last
month.
Born
Dec. 20, 1914, near Pettisville, he was a son of Aaron and Anna (Rupp)
Frey,
and married Katherine Eicher on May 11, 1939.
A
lifelong resident of the Pettisville/Archbold area, he farmed and, with
brother-in-law Tim Yoder, founded Yoder &. Frey, Inc., in 1947.
He
founded Yoder & Frey Auctioneers, Inc., in 1963, and with his sons,
founded
Elias H. Frey & Sons, Inc. He was inducted into the National
Auctioneers
Association Hall of Fame and the Ohio Hall of Fame in 1982.
A
past president of The Farmers & Merchants State Bank and the
Ridgeville
Corners and
Archbold
Area
School
boards, he was the 1979 Archbold Citizen of the Year.
He also served on the board of Little Eden
Camp,
Onekema

participated in many charity auctions around the country, including

Nov. 27, 1916, near Pettisville; he was a son of Aaron and Anna (Rupp)

and married, Helen Beck on June 6, 1940. He lived in the West Unity
area for 40
plus years, and retired in
Phoenix

Ariz.
in 1988, and moved
to
Archbold in 2001. He worked as a farmer most of his life, also as a
well-driller, at, Liechty Farm Supply,
Montpelier
;
and as a bookkeeper at Yoder & Frey, Archbold.
He
sang with quartets through-out the years and with the Gospel Nu-Tones
for 20
years. He was a member of the
Lockport
Mennonite
Church
,
rural Stryker.
Survivors
include his wife, Helen; one son, Rodney (LaDeen) Frey, North Newton,
Kan.;
three daughters, Mrs. Alan (Jeanette)

GOSHEN- Genevieve Friesen, 88, of 1558 Sycamore Court, died at 1:35 p.m. Wednesday (June 12, 2002) at Goshen General Hospital.
Mrs. Friesen was born in Topeka to Edwin J. and Molly Mae (Stoltzfus) Yoder on Jan. 7, 1914, and married John A. Friesen on June 13, 1939, in Topeka.
She is survived by her husband; five sons, J. Stanley (Delores) of Fresno, Calif., Dr. G. Weldon (Luetta) Friesen of Middlebury, C. Richard (Ruth Ann) of Tiskilwa, Ill., G. Delbert (Anna Kay) of Long Beach, Calif., and D. William (Kate) of Olympia, Wash.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Dewayne (Gladys) Johns of Goshen and Mrs. Edward (Grace) Miller of Elkhart; and two brothers, Gerald J. (Maggie) Yoder of Goshen and Galen L. (Esther) Yoder of Topeka.
She was preceded in death by an infant son.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at The Meetinghouse at Greencroft in Goshen. A prayer service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, followed by the funeral service at 4 p.m. at College Mennonite Church. The Rev. Firman Gingerich and the Rev. Klaudia Smucker will preside.
Burial will be at Maple Grove Cemetery in Topeka.
Mrs. Friesen graduated in 1932 from Topeka High School and from Goshen College in 1939. She was a member of College Mennonite Church and spent 41 years as a missionary in India through the Mennonite Board of Missions in Elkhart. She retired to Goshen in 1981.
