Sommerfeld, Amy Ellen Woodward

November 26, 1915 - December 2, 2005

A Celebration of Life

Amy Ellen Woodward was born on November 26, 1915, at home 1 mile south and 7 miles west of Hesston, the daughter of Alfred and Ethel Boyd Woodward. Amy enjoyed growing up on the farm with four brothers and four sisters. She attended Moundridge High School and after two years at Bethel College she taught school in western Harvey County for three years.

She was baptized in the Garden Township Mennonite Church and attended there until her marriage to George Sommerfeld on April 30, 1937, when she became a member of the Pennsylvania Mennonite Church which later became the Whitestone Mennonite Church. She was a faithful member there until her death on December 2, 2005.

George and Amy lived on the farm southwest of Hesston for 45 years. She was a busy farmer's wife and homemaker, raising chickens, keeping the farm accounts, raising a large garden, canning 100's of quarts of vegetables and fruit every summer, and sewing clothing for her seven children. She enjoyed helping with sewing and quilting at the church sewing circle, also at the Rescue Mission Auxiliary in Wichita.

She was one of the first volunteers at the Etcetera Shop in Newton, helped with MDS flood cleanup in Newton and Halstead, and helped with the annual cleaning of dormitories at Hesston College for many years. For several summers they took children from the Kansas City Children's Home to spend a few weeks on the farm.
She was quiet, but deeply spiritual-her Christian convictions were demonstrated in her daily living, and in her concern for others.

She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to all. She loved her family so much and prayed for each of them by name each and every day. She was so proud of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Family gatherings were especially important and a joyous time for her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, their daughter, Becky, and a great grandson. Surviving members of the family include two daughters: Janice Dyck of Moundridge, Elva & Michael Brantner of Overland Park, four sons: Stan & Janet, Lyle & Marj of Sharon Springs, Jerry & Jeanne of Halstead, Glen & Marcy of Kinsley, 19 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, one sister, Ruth Martin of Memphis, MO, two sisters-in-law: Esther Woodward of Oskaloosa, IA and Josie Sommerfeld of Newton.

A Celebration of the Life of Amy Sommerfeld was held Tuesday, December 6, 2005 at Whitestone Mennonite Church, Hesston, Kansas.
