BETTY JANE BULLER
Betty Jane Buller, 54, Hillsboro, a bookkeeper at Irv Schroeder County Motors, died Aug. 1 at St. Francis Regional Medical Center, Wichita. Funeral services were held Aug. 4 at Trinity Mennonite Church, Hillsboro, with Heinz and Dottie Janzen officiating. Burial was in the Lehigh Cemetery. She was a member of the Lehigh Mennonite Church. She was born in Goessel and was a graduate of Newton High School.

LEE E. BECKER
Lee E. Becker, 57, rural Newton, owner of Becker Installation, a remodeling and carpeting firm, died Aug. 3 as the result of a two-vehicle accident near Hesston. Funeral services were held Aug. 6 at Garden Township Mennonite Church, Moundridge, with Carlon Tschetter officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Karen; five sons, Robert Becker of Goessel, Larry Becker of Munich, N.D., Jerry Becker of Hutchinson, and Mark and Quent Martens, both of Newton; and daughter, Judy Neufeld of Hesston; one sister, Rose Marie Redger of Little Rock, Ark.; and eight grandchildren.

JACOB SCHMIDT
Funeral services were held Aug. 6 at Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church near Goessel for Jacob Schmidt, 83, who died Aug. 4 at Bethesda Home, Goessel. A former farmhand, he had lived at the home since 1955. Survivors include a brother, Elmer W. Schmidt, and a sister, Mary Voth, both of Goessel. Burial was in the Alexanderwohl Church cemetery.

AMANDA SMITH
Amanda Mae Smith, 80, Halstead, formerly of Burns, died Aug. 7 at Halstead Hospital. Funeral services were held Aug. 10 at Grace Mennonite Church, with Dean Becker and Harry Wenger officiating. She is survived by her husband, Lloyd R. Smith; two sons, Kenneth of Halstead and Larry of Burns; three brothers, Irvin, Clarence and Curtis Johnson, all of Halstead; a sister, Juleita Koehn of West Point, Miss.; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

EMOGENE HELEN REGIER
A memorial service was held Aug. 9 at Zion Mennonite Church, Elbing, for Emogene Helen Regier, 50, who died July 31 at Samaritan Hospital, Warden, Wash., after an extended illness. Funeral services were held Aug. 4 at Warden (Wash.) Mennonite Church with Frank Horst officiating. She was a resident of Elbing from 1961 to 1978. She was active at Northview Developmental Services Inc., during her stay in Kansas. She is survived by her husband, Theodore J. Regier Jr.; a daughter, Michele H. Hara of Moses Lake, Wash.; two sons, Nathaniel J. Regier of Udell, Iowa, and Christopher B. Regier of Lakeland Village, Wash; her mother, Helen E. Sperling of Reedley, Calif,; one sister, Zillabell "Jane" Friesen of Dinuba, Calif.; one brother, Herbert P. Sperling Jr., of Buellton, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

SARAH REIMER SOMMERFELD
Funeral services for Sarah Reimer Sommerfeld, 84, of Schowalter Villa, Hesston, were held Aug. 10 at Spring Valley Mennonite Church, rural Canton, with Bradley Penner and Herbert Minnich officiating. She died Aug. 6 at Bethel Deaconess Hospital, Newton. Survivors include a brother, Dave Reimer, of rural Canton.

ELIZABETH JANZEN
Elizabeth Janzen, 83, of Hesston, formerly of Goessel, died Aug. 7 at Schowalter Villa. Funeral services were held Aug. 8 at Tabor Mennonite Church, rural Newton, with Orlando Waltner officiating. She is survived by one daughter, Doris Janzen of Goessel; one brother, Otto Unruh of Goessel; and two sisters, Susie Schmidt of rural Newton and Annie Epp of Ferndale, Wash.

PAUL D. KAUFMAN
Funeral services were held Aug. 8 at Eden Mennonite Church, rural Moundridge, for Paul D. Kaufman, 83, who died Aug. 6 in Moundridge. He was the father of Karen Gaeddert of Walton and the brother of Ray J. Kaufman of Newton and Elsie M. Schrag of Hesston.

ESTHER KATHERINE SCHMIDT
Funeral services for Esther Katherine Schmidt, 88, of Newton, were held Aug. 15 at Faith Mennonite Church, Newton, with Ed Stucky officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery, Newton. A former teacher and missionary to the Indians in Oklahoma, she died Aug. 12 at Bethel Deaconess Hospital. A native of Pawnee Rock, she had moved to Newton 25 years ago from Oklahoma. Survivors include four sons, Richard, Lincoln, Neb.; Robert and Wilbur, both of Newton; James of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one daughter, Eleanor Nickel of Newton; two brothers, Sam Schmidt of Revere, Mass., and Roland Schmidt of Pawnee Rock; two sisters, Lena Grossardt of Claflin and Elizabeth Lundstedt of Long Beach, Calif.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, August Schmidt; three brothers and three sisters.

PHILIP D. SCHMIDT
Philip D. Schmidt, 85, of Goessel, a retired farmer, died Aug 6 at Bethesda Home for the Aged, Goessel. Funeral services were held Aug. 19 at Goessel Mennonite Church, with Darrell Ediger officiating. Burial was in Goessel Cemetery. He had lived on a farm near Goessel until moving to town in 1979. Schmidt had been a Bethesda resident since May 1984. Survivors include two daughters, Deloris Schmidt of rural Newton and Elsie Schmidt of Goessel; one brother, Adolf E., of Goessel; one sister, Anna Banman, of Goessel; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His wife, the former Edna Unrau, preceded him in death.

ESTHER SCHRAG
Esther Schrag, 59, a dietary aide at Memorial Home for the Aged, Moundridge, and a Moundridge resident for 39 years, died Aug. 12 at the home. She was the mother of Jo Ann Arrowsmith of Newton. Graveside services were held Aug. 14 at Eden Mennonite Cemetery, rural Moundridge. The services were followed by a memorial service at Eden Mennonite Church, with Don Longbottom officiating. Other survivors include her husband, Paul, two sons, John of Moundridge and Jerry of Fort Worth, Texas; two other daughters, Jane Childs and Jeanette Fast, both of Hutchinson; two brothers, Lester Schroeder of Sioux Falls, and Viola Stucky, both of Pretty Prairie, and Phoebe Naffziger of Harper; one half-brother, Elmer Schroeder of Geneseo; two half-sisters, Lydie Voth of Little River and Mabel Schmidt of Newton; and 10 grandchildren.

NOAH E. LANDIS
Noah E. Landis, 94, of Hesston, died Aug. 23 at Schowalter Villa, Hesston. Graveside services were held Aug. 25 at Eastlawn Cemetery near Hesston, followed by a memorial service at the Hesston Mennonite Church, with Paul Friesen and Wesley Jantz officiating. Landis was a retired Mennonite minister and a former Minnesota resident. Surviving are his wife, the former Katie Gascho; three sons, Elmer of Jackson, Minn., Eldon of Las Cruces, N.M., and Fred of Aldrich, Minn.; three daughters, Berniece Nafziger of Minneapolis, Minn., Bonita Driver of Elkhart, Ind., and Vivian Murray of Lockport, N.Y.; three half-brothers, Floyd, Louis and Vernon, all of Oregon; one half-sister, Mary Landis of Oregon; 22 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. His first wife, the former Ethel Garber, preceded him in death in 1963.

HAROLD L. BORCHARDT
Funeral services for Harold L. Borchardt, 77, of Newton, were held Aug. 22 at Grace Hill Mennonite Church, rural Newton, with James Voth officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. He died Aug. 19 at Axtell Christian Hospital, Newton. A farmer, he had moved to Newton from Denver, Colo., in 1948. Survivors include his wife, the former Leah Rose Nickel; and one sister, Ella Tarabetz of Colfax, Calif.

ADAM NIGHTINGALE
Adam Nightingale, 81, of Halstead died Aug. 19 at Halstead Hospital. Graveside services were held Aug. 21 at Halstead Cemetery, with John Gaeddert officiating. A memorial service was held the same day at First Mennonite Church, Halstead. He was a retired farmer. Survivors include his wife, the former Agnes Schmidt; one son, Richard Nightingale of Halstead; two brothers, Elmer of Newton and John C. of Burrton; four sisters, Elizabeth Janes, Minnie Brandenberger, Anna Cox, all of Halstead, and Martha Born of Sedgwick; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
