STUTZMAN - On the 6th of July, in Clinton Twp., Elkhart county, of consumption, Barbara, widow of Peter Stutzman, aged 40 years, 4 months and 13 days. She leaves three children. During the last week of her life she spoke words of exhortation and admonition to her children and neighbors with wonderful earnestness. She testified against the very common custom of taking likeness, having musical instruments and insuring property, and spoke sharply against pride, fashion and other things. She had a desire to leave this world of suffering and be with Jesus. She said she felt that she must thus exhort and reprove through the power and Spirit of God. She also admonished the preachers to be faithful and blow their trumpets and warn the people, so that many might be brought to a knowledge of the truth. Her funeral was largely attended. Services by D. Johns and Eli Miller.

LEHMAN - On the 11th of June, near Dalton, Wayne Co., Ohio, of consumption, Bro. Isaac P. Lehman, aged 40 years, 3 months and 27 days. Armstutz from the Chippewa Church from Luke 7:11-18. The deceased brother had to endure sickness a long time, but he suffered no pain, and he was ever patient, declaring himself content with whatever God might be pleased to do. He retained consciousness to the last, and desired to exchange time with the glories of eternity. Shortly before his death he clasped his hands saying, "O, Lord Jesus, come soon," and soon He came and took the dear brother from our midst. The whole community is sorrowing his departure, for he was universally loved, and might have been called "everybody's friend." He leaves his mother two brothers and three sisters and many relatives and friends to mourn their loss, yet they mourn not as those who have no hope.

HARTZLER - On the 4th of July on the Haw Patch, Noble county, Ind., of the infirmities of old age, Lydia King, widow of John Hartzler, aged 86 years, 10 months and 18 days. She had not been able to go out of doors or to the table to eat for four and a half years, had to be fed for three years. But she bore all her misfortune with Christian patience. She often expressed a desire to go home and be with Jesus. She was a faithful member of the church for many years. And we have great reason to believe that she is numbered with the saints in that heavenly home. Funeral services by Isaac Smucker and Jonathan Kurtz. The deceased was born in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania. "In the grave they laid her body But her soul is far above, In a bright and happy country In a land of peace and love."

She suffered only 36 hours, and then fell asleep in Jesus, to whom she had given her heart in her early youth. She leaves a deeply bereaved husband (with whom she spent one year and 9 months of a happy wedded life) and an infant 5 months old, besides her parents, who also deeply mourn the death of their only child. She was always an obedient daughter and was beloved by all. She was a consistent member of the Amish church, and at the time of her death she left a good evidence that she was at peace with God. She was preparing for a visit to Indiana with her husband in the near future, but God willed it otherwise. Funeral services by Noah Schrock and Jonas Borntreger of Reno county, Kansas, and P.O. Hershberger of Holt county, Neb., from 1 Thess. 5. This reminds us anew that death does not only call away the old, but the young as well. Peace to her ashes.

MAST - On the 11th of June, near Morgantown, Berks county, Pa., suddenly of heart disease, Bish. John P. Mast, aged 61 years, 6 months and 22 days. Ten years ago he was ordained a bishop in the Amish church, having then already been a minister for 25 years. On the 10th of June at the usual service we preached on the uncertainty of mortal life, pointing out the necessity of continual watchfulness, because the Lord may come at time when man may least expect him. He spoke also of the great mercy of God and commented on the parable of the prodigal son. On Monday morning, the 11th he went to drive some cattle into another field, when he suddenly fell forward on his face, apparently dying instantly. Last Spring he desired another bishop to aid him in his duties. Bro. Gideon Stoltzfus was accordingly ordained. He leaves a widow and many friends to mourn his death. He was beloved and respected, not only in his church, but by the community in general. About a thousand people were assembled on the occasion of his burial on Mast's graveyard near Springfield on the 14th. Funeral services were held by Bish.
