Augsburger, David W.

August 14, 1938 - Oct. 30, 2023

David Wilbur Augsburger, husband of Leann Elrich Augsburger, died Oct. 30, 2023, at his home in Claremont, California, surrounded by his wife and daughters. He was 85.

David was born on August 14, 1938, in Delphos, Ohio, to Clarence and Estella Shenk Augsburger, the youngest of six children.

He grew up on the family farm in Elida, Ohio, and spent time as a child in Florida and Virginia. He graduated from Elida High School, then attended Eastern Mennonite College (Bachelor of Arts ’60) and Eastern Mennonite Seminary (Bachelor of Divinity ’63) in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

During and after seminary he worked for Mennonite Broadcasts (1961–1974), serving as host of the Mennonite Hour radio program, writing and delivering messages focused on the Anabaptist response to the social concerns of the day: war and peace, racism and interpersonal relationships. He also provided musical leadership and sang in the Mennonite Hour Quartet. Ordained in 1963, he served as pastor at Trissels Mennonite Church in Broadway, Virginia, 1963–71.

In 1974 he completed his PhD in Personality, Theology and Psychotherapy at Claremont School of Theology and took a post teaching pastoral counseling at Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in Lombard, Illinois. Four years later, he moved to Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminaries (now Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary) in Elkhart, Indiana, and taught there until 1990, when he moved to California to teach at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena until his retirement in 2012. While living in Claremont, he attended a house church, Peace Mennonite Fellowship, and later co-pastored the church with his wife, Leann, until his death.

David dedicated his life to the study and practices of pastoral care, counseling and reconciliation. His passion for helping individuals navigate the complexities of human relationships and conflict was the driving force behind his significant contributions to the field.

Among his major publications were Pastoral Counseling Across Cultures, Conflict Mediation Across Cultures, The Freedom of Forgiveness, Dissident Discipleship and Caring Enough to Confront. These works, along with many others, demonstrated his commitment to promoting understanding, compassion and healing in a world often marred by strife and division. His widely published Caring Enough series continues to be a valuable resource for individuals seeking to improve their relationships and resolve conflicts with grace and empathy.

He led workshops nationally and internationally on topics including conflict management in the church, cross-cultural counseling, hatred, prejudice, cross-cultural conflict mediation, grief, marriage, forgiveness and reconciliation.

He was a singer of opera; sculptor; lover of art, music and film; a world traveler; gardener of hot peppers; and a renowned cook and chocolatier. He was always eager to recommend a tasty eatery. He was full of curiosity for others and the world, and his passion for everything good in life was infectious. He was an attentive listener, ever present with others. He was a dedicated pacifist and peacemaker, adept at confronting injustice. He saw the good and encouraged the good in others. He made a lasting impact across the world through his teaching, writing, counseling, public speaking, compassionate mentoring and friendships.

She related to believers and refugees and worked with educational and development issues inside Somalia. She also organized peacemaking conferences for women and traditional elders. She returned to the U.S. in October 2000.

In the decades that followed, she continued to build bridges between Muslims and Christians. She was a passionate advocate for peace in her church, community, and around the world. Beitzel, Terry Dean

July 26, 1967 - January 29, 2021

Terry Dean Beitzel, 53, of Harrisonburg, passed away Friday January 29, 2021 at Sentara RMH Medical Center. He was born in Meyersdale, Pa., on July 26, 1967, the second son of Denver Dean Beitzel and Naomi Maust Beitzel.

Terry graduated from Northern Garrett High School and pursued his undergraduate studies at Frostburg State University. He then earned a masters degree in the history of science from Harvard University and a doctorate in conflict analysis and conflict resolution from George Mason University.

Terry was baptized and a lifelong member of Cherry Glade Mennonite Church, Accident, Md.; and a member of the faith community at Park View Mennonite Church. He enjoyed warm and deep relationships with various church members. He took his faith seriously and was grateful to be part of a church community that encouraged him to ask intellectually honest and probing questions. For Terry, faith was a whole-life endeavor that he fully integrated with his passion for social justice.

In 2007, Terry joined the faculty of the Justice Studies Department at James Madison University. Prior to coming to JMU, he taught at Bridgewater College and Eastern Mennonite University in the Peace and Justice program, and served as a research assistant for the International Criminal Court. Terry was an inspiring teacher who encouraged his students to ask questions, to accept responsibility for their learning, and to become involved in the JMU, Harrisonburg, and Rockingham County communities. The overarching question in his teaching resonates with his students long after completing a course with him: "who is responsible to do what for whom?"

Terry authored an extensive and wide-ranging series of publications and conference presentations. His scholarship explored the transitions from violent conflict; contemporary and novel approaches to furthering justice; and the role of nonviolence, responsibility, civic engagement in the lives of individuals and societies. The high quality of Terrys work and his passion for cross-cultural community building led to collaborations in Guinea, India, Kenya, and Kosovo. The global scope of his work led him to serve as a practitioner for the Global Initiative for Justice, Truth and Reconciliation (GIJTR) with the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience (ICSC).

This impressive record of scholarship and international collaboration provided the foundation for Terry to establish the International Journal on Responsibility. Terry recruited the Editorial Board and served as the founding Editor-in-Chief. The journal serves as a forum for discourse on relevant questions of responsibility within any area of academic study or aspect of public life. The journals success was due, in large part, to Terrys tireless efforts to ensure that germs of ideas ultimately came to fruition as published issues.

Terry believed deeply in nonviolent forms of conflict resolution and thus relished the chance to become the director of the Mahatma Gandhi Center for Global Nonviolence at JMU in 2014. In that leadership role, he re-energized the Gandhi Center, generating more opportunities for JMU students and scholars to collaborate with community members in the Shenandoah Valley and beyond. Partnerships were launched with varied groups such as the Valley Justice Coalition, New Bridges Immigration Center, Fairfield Mediation Center, Many Voices of Harrisonburg, and the Center for Peace Studies and Violence Prevention at Virginia Tech. The Gandhi Centers most recent project is the creation of the Gandhi Mobile Peace Library that will visit different local elementary and middle Schools.

He was preceded in death by his father Denver Dean.

Terry is survived and eternally loved by his wife, Sylvia Whitney Beitzel; his daughter, Myra Whitney Beitzel; his mother, Naomi Maust Beitzel; his mother-in-law, Tomasa Whitney Robledo; his brother, Gary Lynn Beitzel and sister-in-law, Dawn Sines Beitzel; his brother-in-law, Robert F Whitney and wife, Vilma Hernndez; his nieces, Terah Beitzel Crawford and husband, Eric Crawford, Markell OFaolean-Fickes and husband, Jason Fickes, Jade OFaolean-Frushour and husband, Kenneth Frushour; his nephew, Max Lynn Beitzel and wife, Nina Glisan Beitzel, Edgar G. Whitney, and Robert T. Whitney; his grandnieces, Kennedy, Isla, and Rory OFaolean-Fickes, and Allie Beitzel; and his grandnephews, Asher and Sawyer Crawford, and Syrus OFaolean-Frushour.

A memorial service will be held in February led by Park View Mennonite Church at a date and time to be announced on this obituary page.

In lieu of flowers, plans are underway to create a scholarship in Terrys honor to which donations will be welcomed. Details will be provided at a later time through James Madison University.

Their marriage began on December 21, 1958, at Sunnyside Conservative Mennonite Church in Kalona. Norman and Ruth Ann raised their four children, a handful of “fresh air children,” and nearly 20 foster children on the farm where he grew up. Norman loved visiting with people, telling colorful stories, working with horses, and spending time with his family. He thoroughly enjoyed serving God, by serving others. Family vacations always involved a service component. Norman went on many short-term mission trips and volunteered often with the Mennonite Disaster Service. His students loved his practical, hands-on style as he served as a Sunday School Superintendent and Sunday School teacher. He and Ruth Ann also helped as youth group leaders. Norman was a founding board member for Crooked Creek Christian Camp.

Following a brief hospitalization to relieve fluid retention, Norman was admitted to Washington County Hospice in mid-December. He was ready to die and decided against further testing or treatment. He passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, December 31, shortly after midnight at age 88. He is survived by his wife Ruth Ann; four children, Gary (Julie) Bontrager of Wellman, Errol (Coletta) Bontrager of Kalona, Ken (Deborah) Bontrager of Arcadia, Florida, and Cindy (Mike) Gingerich of Kalona; 15 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; two sisters, Edna Miller and Ethel Bontrager and a brother-in-law, Calvin Yoder. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Ada Yoder, a granddaughter Hadassah Ruth Bontrager, a great grandson Lowell Elijah Gingerich and a brother-in-law Emery H. Miller.

Funeral Service will be 10:30 AM, Saturday, January 3, 2026, at Sunnyside Mennonite Church in Kalona. A private family burial will be in the South Gingerich Cemetery prior to the service. Visitation will be Friday, January 2, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Sunnyside Mennonite Church. A Memorial fund has been established for Crooked Creek Christian Camp, Water for Life, or Camp Deerpark in New York. Messages and tributes may be sent to the family at www.powellfuneralhomes.com. Brunk, Kenneth Dale

October 7, 1949 - December 15, 2025

Kenneth Dale Brunk was born in Denbigh, Virginia on October 7th, 1949 to Dora Hertzler and Daniel Wenger Brunk. He passed away peacefully on December 15th, 2025 in Rockingham, Virginia.

As a young man, Ken was a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War, and opted to serve in Tanzania for three years as part of a village development program. During his time there, he learned Swahili and spoke it like a native for the rest of his life. He loved the country dearly and considered it his second home, returning many times and frequently bringing family and friends along on trips.

After marrying his wife Gail Jantzi in 1980, they settled in Batesville, Virginia, where Ken helped design and build their house. They raised two children there, Gabriel and Anastasia (Annie), and the family later moved to Harrisonburg, Virginia. He also worked on adding a landing strip to their property in Orange so he could store and fly his planes.

Ken was a man of many skills, and could be always found working on new hobbies and projects. He was an accomplished woodworker, and built everything from kayaks to spinning wheels to safari furniture.  Also a talented bluegrass musician and singer, he taught himself to play the piano and guitar by ear.  He could just as easily be found working on an old Singer treadle sewing machine as baking another batch of whole wheat bread, reading about David Livingston and Mark Twain, or experimenting with ham radios. In his later years, he spent much of his time writing up his own stories of his many travel (mis)adventures in Tanzania and across Europe, and leaning into his new role as a grandfather by building sandboxes for his grandsons and making them laugh with as many funny noises as he could.

Ken’s zest for life, humor, curiosity, and sense of adventure will always be remembered by those who knew him. Besides his two children, he is survived by Gail, his wife of 45 years, daughter-in-law Lauren, and two beloved grandsons, Everett and Silas. He is also survived by his four siblings: Shirley Coberly, Ron Brunk, his twin sister Kathy Stoltzfus, and Juanita Brunk, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Memorial details are forthcoming, but in lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Friends of Shirati.
