c. 1946-47 - April 9, 2026
Alicia Nafziger, age 79, of Lancaster, PA, formerly of
Millersville, PA, and Honduras, died on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at UPMC
Harrisburg, from complications from a heart valve replacement surgery.
Alicia was born and raised in Honduras, Central America. As a child, she
went to Standard Fruit Company Primary School in Isletas, Colon, and
attended the Escuela Biblica Menonita de Trujillo (Mennonite Bible School of
Trujillo). She earned her GED in Lancaster PA, as well as graduating from
Willow Street Vocational Tech with a Licensed Practical Nursing degree in
1986. Alicia worked for 28 years at Manor Family Health Center in
Millersville as a nurse and skilled phlebotomist.
She came to faith in Christ as a young adult in La Ceiba, Honduras; her
relationship with God was central to her life. Alicia married Eldon in 1973
and they moved to Pennsylvania. In 1975, she became a member of Millersville
Mennonite Church, where she attended church while she lived in Pennsylvania.
She became a United States citizen in 1999. Alicia was very honored to have
U.S. citizenship but was proud to be Honduran as well. She and Eldon lived
in Balfate, Honduras, from 2017 to 2024.
Alicia was a kind, intelligent and talkative person. She enjoyed cooking
meals, and both her hearty laugh and sensitivity made her a wonderful
hostess. She loved her family and friends; she enjoyed reading, music,
flowers, and taking care of plants. Although her mother tongue was Spanish,
she learned English after moving to the US. Her English was excellent, and
she was very comfortable speaking both languages.

Neufeld, Margaret (Loewen)
April 3, 1973 - April 18, 2026
Margaret Loewen Neufeld passed away on April 18, 2026 at
her home in Montezuma. She was born on April 3, 1973, in Cuauhtémoc,
Chihuahua, Mexico to Peter and Agatha (Teichroeb) Loewen.
She along with her family lived in Mexico until 1984, when they moved to
Elkhart. She finished her schooling there and was proud to have gotten her
high school diploma.
On May 22, 1994, she was baptized at the Reinlander Mennonite Church in
Mexico and on July 10,1994, she married Jake Neufeld from Mexico. They moved
back to Kansas and began their family. For the first ten years of their
married lives, they lived in Elkhart, where she worked at the local nursing
home. She was known as the one who brought energy. She always had stories
and jokes to tell and made an effort to make others day better. Around 2004,
they moved to Meade and Margaret began working as a housekeeper at the
hospital in Meade, where she continued putting smiles on others faces. She
loved making others happy and she did that everywhere she went!
She joined the Copeland Mennonite Evangelical Church shortly after she had
rededicated her life to Christ. She served where she could within the church
and was a great blessing to many. Although she had her flaws, she did her
best to grow in her walk as a Christian and remained faithful to God and
finished her race strong!
She loved serving. Margaret kept finding ways to serve the community
wherever she went. In the last few years, she spent a lot of time planning
and directing the farmers market in Montezuma. She had a skill for
encouraging others to use their God given gifts and share them with others,
and of course you could count on her to be making some kind of delicious
meal there as well. Making food for others was one of her biggest love
languages. She loved serving people in that way and sacrificed much of her
time to help make food at fundraisers and church events. Not only did she
help with these events, but she did it with joy. You could count on those
around Margaret to have a laugh or two while working together with her.
As much as Margaret loved to cook and serve the community, she had one
greater love and that was her children and her grandchildren. They were her
pride and joy, and she loved doing anything she could for them. Her kids may
have even had to ask her to "give them space" from time to time. Margaret
loved to snuggle her grandkids, or as she called them "her munchkins" on her
lazy boy. She also loved taking the grandkids to the park and watching them
explore and play.
Margaret Loewen Neufeld, a loving wife, mother, sister, and grandmother will
be greatly missed by many. She leaves behind on her in-law side, John and
Agatha Neufeld, Tina Knelson, Agatha Neufeld, Maria Fehr, and Lisa Fehr;
from her side, brothers, John and wife, Eva Loewen, George and wife, Helen
Loewen, Pete and wife, Helen Loewen, Ben and wife, Agatha Loewen, Isaac and
wife, Susanna Loewen, and Jake and wife, Tina Loewen; brother-in law, George
Kroeker; sisters, Justina Friesen, Helen Neufeld, and Eva and husband, John
Hamm; sister-in-law, Lisa Neufeld; her husband, Jake Neufeld; her children;
son, Pancho Neufeld and wife, Joodi along with their five children, Jayden,
Shawn, Rilyn, River, and Landon, son, David Neufeld and wife, Margaret, and
daughter, Sara. She is preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Agatha
Loewen; sisters, Mary Kroeker,Tina Neufeld, and Agatha Loewen; and two
infant baby boys (miscarriages).
Funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 23, 2026 at 10:30 AM at
Mennonite Evangelical Church, Copeland. Private family burial will follow at
Copeland Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 21, 2026 and Wednesday,
April 22, 2026 from 1:00 to 5:00 PM both days at Swaim Funeral Chapel,
Montezuma. Memorials are suggested to the family in care of the funeral
home. Thoughts and memories may be shared in the online guestbook at

Nofziger, Cloyce Jay
June 16, 1941 - January 15, 2023
Sunday evening, January 15, 2023 Cloyce Jay Nofziger went
home to be with Jesus. Nancy, his wife of almost 54 years, was holding his
hand when he passed at home in his “easy boy” recliner as he liked to refer
to it. On December 17, a mass of cancer was discovered, and for nearly a
month Cloyce lived a peace- and grace-filled time of saying goodbye to
family and loved friends.
Cloyce was born June 16, 1941 at the home farm of Glen and Rosella (Miller)
Nofziger of Archbold, OH. Cloyce was a lifelong member of Lockport Mennonite
Church of Stryker, OH, and graduated from Archbold High School in 1959. He
married Nancy Lou Yoder of Middlebury, IN, on February 15, 1969. Nancy
survives and resides at Fairlawn Village, Archbold, OH.
From growing up on a tomato farm, to FFA in high school, to peddling fall
harvest displays after “retiring”, Cloyce loved farming his entire life.
Cloyce will be remembered for his generous spirit and fun loving
personality. He said what he thought even if sometimes it was deemed
“inappropriate” by some, yet he never had malicious intent. “Pot-licker” was
a term of endearment to give a hard time to those he loved. Known for his
suspenders and hat collection, he wore his personality on his sleeve. People
never had to wonder where they stood with him. He accepted others and showed
genuine interest in getting to know them and appreciating their interests.
Visiting and welcoming new people delighted him. Right up until the end, he
loved to pull his family close, especially the grandkids, tell them how much
he loved them and hold their hands.
Much will be missed: games of Ticket to Ride, Euchre, and Wizard, countless
phone calls from his many faithful friends, driving the Ford loader tractor,
four-wheeler rides, helping on the farm, road trips with Mom, winters in
Sarasota and seeing buddies at the coffee shop, morning Lockport Bible
Studies, and Global Disciples banquets. Cloyce is a legacy, filled with
surprising respect and acceptance.
Also surviving are four sons; Kevin (Anna) of Lancaster, PA, Wendell
(Melanie) of Costa Rica, Glenn (Erin) of Kidron, OH and Galen (Erika) on the
home farm near West Unity, OH, as well as thirteen grandchildren; Katyarina,
Dimitri, Rebekah, Andre, Abigail, Gabriel, Mattea, Luke, Karis, Harley,
Averie, Jaxton, and Maislyn.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, January 21 at 11
A.M. at Lockport Mennonite Church with Pastor Matt Weaver officiating. A
graveside service will precede in the Lockport Cemetery at 10 A.M.
Visitation will be held at the church from 11 A.M. - 1 P.M. and 4 - 7 P.M.
on Friday. Short Funeral Home in Archbold has been entrusted with the
arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be
given to Global Disciples. www.ShortFuneralHome.com

Overholt, Leora (Yoder)
January 22, 1940 - December 19, 2025
Leora (Yoder) Overholt, age 85, was born in Virginia Beach,
Virginia, on January 22, 1940, to parents J. Elmer and Amanda Yoder.
She passed from this life on December 19, 2025.
Funeral services will be held Monday, December 22, 2025 at 10:30am at the
Franklin Mennonite Church, 102 Mennonite Church Road, Franklin, KY
42134. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be
Sunday, December 21, 2025 from 2pm until 4pm and again from 6pm until 8pm at
the church.
Leora was married to Mervin Overholt on November 3, 1961, and lived with her
husband of 64 years in Logan County, Kentucky. She was a member of the
Franklin Mennonite Church, in Franklin, Kentucky.
Leora is survived by her husband and six children: Naomi (Jim) Yoder,
Columbus, NC; Jonathan (Cheryl), Auburn, KY; Nathan (Rose), Russellville,
KY; Wayne (Elva), Russellville, KY; Michael (Darlene), Ripley, WV; Tim
(Joyce), Ripley, WV; and twenty-eight grandchildren and nineteen
great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three siblings: Marie Yoder (late
David), New Holland, PA; Roy (Mary) Yoder, Harrisonburg, VA; Omar
(Esther) Yoder, New Holland, PA; and two sisters-in-law: Erma (late
Owen) Yoder and Paula (late Eldon) Yoder.
She was preceded in death by her parents and five siblings: Treva Zook, Owen
Yoder, Elmina Yoder, Viola Yoder, and Eldon Yoder; brothers-in-law Bill Zook
and David Yoder; and one grandchild: Carlan Yoder.
Leora (Mom) spent her younger years on a farm in Virginia Beach, where they
produced chicken, duck, and rabbit for the farmer’s market. They were not
rich, and she knew what it was like to not have indoor plumbing in an era
when most of her friends took such things for granted.
When Mom was 14, she gave her heart to Jesus during a revival conducted by
George R. Brunk. She loved her church and throughout her life would
often refer back quotes and sermons given by Jake Hershberger, her bishop.
Mom taught school for two years prior to marriage, and did one brief
teaching stint after marriage, when she took over a classroom to help after
the former teacher passed away mid-term. Her love for learning and words
continued throughout the rest of her life.
In 1969, she moved to Kentucky. Although a dairy farmer’s wife, farming was
never her first love. Her main outdoor activities often focused on caring
for her much-loved flower beds.
Mom is remembered for her neat and organized ways. For many years she worked
as the secretary for Overholt and Sons, the family storage shed business.
Her records were meticulously kept and her files were well organized.
Leora suffered from dementia in her later years. During her journey through
mental illness she continued to exemplify a sweet spirit and brought joy to
her caretakers. Her love for singing continued, and she could often be
comforted in her anxiety and confusion by being led in a song.
We wish to thank the many people who have blessed our lives and Mom’s life
over the years. Thank-you and God bless you!
Quotes from Mother’s Bible:
- Humility is nothing to prove, nothing to lose.
- The church doesn’t save you, but it is a shelter for the saved.
- Gossip – sharing an evil report with someone who has nothing to do
with the problem or the solution to the problem.
- The beautiful inner qualities of the Christian life will find
expression on the outside.
- A church can seldom resurrect what a home has put to death.
- Don’t buy what you don’t need with money you don’t have to impress
people you don’t like.
- No one will drift into heaven.
- A true test of integrity is how a person responds when he is wrong.
- Sin will keep you from the Bible. The Bible will keep you from
sin.
- The cross is not circumstances; it is the consequence of taking the
name of Jesus.
- It’s easier to forgive an enemy than a friend of relative.
- Many people substitute activity for obedience.
- Man is neither fit nor able to receive or handle glory

Penner, Alvin
December 8, 1935 - February 18, 2026
Alvin I Penner was born December 8, 1935, at home in
McPherson County, Kansas, the fourth of five children born to Anna (Pauls)
and Isaac Penner.
During his early years he enjoyed farming and raising Black Angus cattle
with his family. During high school he was needed on the farm, so he did not
have the opportunity to participate in school sports, an activity which he
would have loved.
After graduating from Inman High School in 1954, he worked at Culvert
Manufacturing Co. in Hutchinson, in addition to fulfilling his farming
duties. Wishing to fulfill his conscription requirement with alternative
service he registered as a conscientious objector in 1955. He elected to
complete his two-year service requirement with Mennonite Central Committee,
and went for a four-week orientation session at their headquarters in Akron,
PA. He was then assigned to be part of a new MCC unit located in Denver CO.
Al was assigned to serve in the Medical Records Department at Denver General
Hospital, which was located within walking distance of the MCC unit housed
at First Mennonite Church. The Director of Medical Records provided an
excellent learning environment and was a good mentor to Al. It was here that
Al first learned about supervision of staff and the coordination of services
with other departments within the hospital. This is when he learned that he
had a passion for hospital administration.
It was at First Mennonite Church in Denver that Al and Sue first met in the
fall of 1957. Sue had to patiently wait for Al to show his interest in her.
With few financial resources their dates consisted of walks in the park and
singing with the church young adults at area hospitals. That spring semester
Sue returned to her home in Ohio to graduate with her high school class. Al
and a friend drove to Ohio for the graduation ceremony. Sue rode back with
them to Denver for the summer, stopping in Inman so Sue could meet the
Penners, who kindly switched their speaking from German to English whenever
she entered the room. That summer Al and Sue became engaged. Sue returned to
Ohio before arriving in North Newton by train that fall in the middle of the
night with a suitcase and her sewing machine, to attend Bethel College. Al
joined her a couple of months later when his service time was completed and
they were married in May of 1958. He graduated with a BA in 1961.
A short time before graduating from Bethel he was offered a position in a
CPA firm in Newton, which he accepted. He worked there for six years and
with a growing family it was a great beginning to his career. He enjoyed
accounting and auditing, and this provided good occasions for networking.
Opportunity presented itself for a position at Bethel Deaconess Hospital in
1966 and he spent 20 years in administration there, loving every minute.
Also, he worked to oversee the transition of Bethel Home for the Aged into
the Kidron Bethel Retirement Community as it was developing. During these
years he received additional education in hospital administration at St.
Louis University.
In 1986 he was recruited to be Chief Operating Officer at Hutchinson
Hospital. He thoroughly enjoyed the years in the Hutchinson environment, a
bit like coming home as this area was so close to where he had grown up. In
2003 he left the Hutchinson Hospital position and enjoyed five years of less
intense engagement, working for Fund Development at Schowalter Villa. After
Schowalter Villa he refocused and learned laser engraving, starting a small
business which he continued until a month before his death.
With over 40 years of service in the health care field Al participated on
many community boards and service clubs. He chaired both the Harvey County
United Way and the Harvey County Blood Drive. He served as chair of the
Newton USD 373 School Board and the Bethel College Board of Directors, as
well as the mayor of North Newton. Having a passion for the church he also
served on the board of the Western District of the General Conference
Mennonite Church. He enjoyed traveling the country with the Kansas Health
Policy Council, learning and sharing best practices in health care
administration.
Family connections and spending time together were important to Al. He
coached little league teams, facilitated family gatherings and trips,
stretched fence, shingled roofs and painted many walls as children and
grandchildren moved into their own homes. He enjoyed time in his workshop
and made many gifts from wood and acrylic for his family and friends.
In retirement he enjoyed daily coffee with friends at Mojo’s, playing weekly
tennis matches and riding his bike on the North Newton trails.
Preceding him in death were his son, Kevin Penner; his parents, Anna and
Isaac Penner; a brother, Elmer; two sisters, Sara Irene Penner and Elizabeth
Thomas; brother-in-law, Charles Thomas; sister-in-law, Joetta Penner. Those
left to mourn his passing are his wife of 67 ¾ years, Sue; a son, Keith
(Sharon) Penner; a daughter, Connie (Jerl) Banning; a daughter-in-law
Marlene Penner. Grandchildren, Adam (Sarah)Banning; Brooke (William)
Heffernan; Jacob Penner (Elizabeth Jamison); Abby (Parker) Lathrop; Isaac
Penner (Gabrielle Fangman); Canyon Penner (Riley Quezada); Sienna Penner
(Caleb Beachy) and four great-grandchildren, Lucy and Evan Banning; Will and
Owen Heffernan.
A memorial service will be held at Bethel College Mennonite Church on
Saturday, March 7 at 11:00 a.m. The service will live-streamed. In lieu of
flowers contributions can be directed to Mennonite Economic Development
Association (MEDA), Bethel College, or Bethel College Mennonite Church and
left in the care of Petersen Funeral Home.

Penner, Julia Ellen
March 4, 1928 — January 4, 2026
Julia Ellen Penner, age 97, of Mountain Lake, Minnesota,
passed from us to her Lord, January 4, 2026.
Julia was born on March 4, 1928, to Clarence and Clara (Martin) Smucker. At
the age of 12, she trusted Jesus as her Savior, and a year later, during a
youth meeting, she made a wholehearted commitment to live her life for the
Lord who had died and risen again for her. Her faith remained the foundation
and guiding strength of her life.
On June 6, 1953, Julia married Bruno Penner at the Mennonite Church in
Orrville, Ohio. They had met the previous summer while serving together in
voluntary service. During that time, Bruno often preached at outdoor Sunday
services, while Julia accompanied congregational singing on a portable
organ. Through shared faith, mutual respect and love, and joy in one
another’s company, their lifelong partnership was formed.
From 1951 to 1952, Julia taught first and second grade in Orrville, Ohio.
After marriage, she devoted herself to her family, serving faithfully
alongside Bruno in his various pastorates while lovingly raising their five
children.
Though busy at home, Julia consistently found ways to serve others. She
wrote children’s Sunday School curriculum for Mennonite Publishing House,
attended women’s church meetings, and occasionally shared short talks or
devotions during Sunday evening services. She also served as Primary
Superintendent of Sunday School. During the summers, Julia opened her home
to children from Chicago, and she and Bruno frequently welcomed guests,
including visiting missionaries. In later years, as Bruno became less
mobile, Julia’s devoted care and attentiveness stood as a lasting example to
her children of love and commitment.
Julia is survived by her five children: Carolyn (Kevin) Randall of
Huntsville, Texas; Timothy (Carolyn) Penner of Goshen, Indiana; Sharon
(Perry) Harder of Mountain Lake, Minnesota; Mary (Steve) Cheslik of
Harrisonville, Missouri; and Dan (Cheryl) Penner of Blair, Nebraska. She is
also survived by 21 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bruno Penner; her parents; her
sisters, Pauline, Virginia, and Carol; her brothers, Richard and Robert; and
her great-granddaughter, June Randall.
Julia will be remembered for her steadfast faith, quiet service, generous
hospitality, and deep love for her family and church. In a story she wrote
for her children about her life with Bruno, she included these lines by
Charles Wesley:
"All praise to our redeeming Lord, who joins us by His grace, And bids us
each to each restored, together seek His face. He bids us build each other
up; and gathered into one, To our high calling’s glorious hope, we hand in
hand go on."

Peters, Earl Chester
March 19, 1933 - July 16, 2015
Louisville, GA – Earl Chester Peters, 82, was
called home to be with the Lord Thursday, July 16, 2015.
Born at home in Newark Township, Michigan, Earl was one of 9 children born
to the late Cary Ezra Peters and Flossie Iota Allman. On March 21, 1945 at
the age of twelve, Earl was baptized and became a member of the Church of
God in Christ Mennonite. Here began his life as a light of his faith,
which was so evident in the life that he lived and the people’s lives he
touched. In 1952, Earl met the love of his life in Harrison, Michigan
and on August 8, 1954, he married Ellyn Mae Gearig to whom he was married
for over sixty years. Over the next nine years, the addition of six
children blessed his life.
Working throughout his entire life, Earl taught the value of hard work and
dedication to his children as well as those around him. As a young man
he worked in the sawmill industry with his father. In 1970 Earl and his
family moved to Louisville, GA where he ran a dairy and farmed.
He also worked in the construction field with his cousins and alongside his
sons at various times. He had a passion for engineering and inventing
and was the man many would count on to come up with a solution to almost
anything.
Earl loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with all his heart and
faithfully served him throughout his life. He never met a stranger or
missed an opportunity to witness for the Lord. Helping others was as
much a part of him as breathing. Throughout his life he volunteered
his time to others. Ministering to young prisoners, working with the
Red Cross and helping in service units for disaster relief across the
country were just some of the ways Earl served his church and
community. He would never hesitate to drop what he was doing to help
someone in need. Loving, Compassionate, and Selfless, that was him. He
was the greatest story teller of all times.
Earl is survived by his wife Ellyn, his six children; Dawn Peters (GA),
Steve Peters (Kim) SC, Dottie Peters (GA), Denise Unruh (Verle) OR, LeaErla
Sheffield (Sam) TN and Sam Peters (Susan) SC; seven siblings, Herbert

Mennonite Church from 7:00-9:00 P.M. Tuesday evening, July 21, 2015.
The family would like to thank everyone for the love, prayers, and kindness
given to us during this very difficult time. We are touched and
blessed.

and Flossie Allman Peters in Alma, MI. He peacefully passed away on Jan. 29,
2020 at Hickory Woods Assisted Living in Murray, KY, reaching the age of 96
years.
Dad was the oldest in a family of nine children. His father was a victim of
polio and became crippled. Thus, Dad had to take more responsibility to help
care for the family. He received his eight years of formal education in the
Ithaca area.
At a young age, Dad felt the Lord call him and he repented of his sins and
was baptized into the Church of God in Christ Mennonite, on April 9, 1937,
by Min. Hiram Mininger. His Christian life was always very meaningful to
him. Family devotions and church attendance were very important to him. He
remained true to his faith all the days of his life.
Dad met Mom, Vada Buerge, and they were married at Pettisville, Ohio, on
June 27, 1948, by his grandfather, Min. August R. Peters. They shared joys
and sorrows of life for over 71 years. One son, August, was born to them. In
Oct. of 1954, they began their time as missionaries in Mexico, in the state
of Chihuahua. They enjoyed their time, and often talked about their
experiences there. They spent seven years there and returned to their home
in Harrison, MI in Jan. 1962. While in Mexico, they welcomed into their home
a starved 4-month old baby, John, whom they later adopted. He met a tragic
death at the age of 22 years. They had many years caring for foster children
in their home, making lifelong friends. Later in life, they adopted Leah who
had been a foster child when she was young. He provided for his family by
owning and running a crate manufacturing business, and also was into sales
of different products. Gardening was always an enjoyable way to spend his
day. He especially enjoyed growing strawberries in his older years and spent
hours on hands and knees weeding and picking strawberries. In 1993, they
moved to Murray, KY to be near their children. Dad enjoyed being part of the
congregation and he will be missed.
Left to cherish fond memories are his wife, Vada; one son, August and Kathy
Peters, Sedalia, KY; one daughter, Leah and Michael Doud, Essexville, MI;
nine grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and one great great
grandchild; two brothers, Orval Peters, Walnut Hill, FL., and Willard
Peters, Barron, WI; three sisters, Edna Peters and Helen Peters, Ithaca, MI.
and Donna and Kurt Fellows, Alma, MI; one sister-in-law, Ellyn Peters,
Louisville, GA. His wife's family, brother-in-law Harold Buerge,

He was preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law, one son, two
brothers, one sister, two brothers-in-law, and four sisters-in-law.

Peters, Orval A.
May 14, 1927 - February 10, 2022
Orval A. Peters was born May 14, 1927 to Cary and Flossie
Allman Peters in Gratiot County Michigan. He completed his earthly race
early in the morning of February 10, 2022, having reached the age of 94
years.
Orval was the third child in a family with three brothers and four sisters,
and the first years of his life along with his school education were in
Harrison, Michigan. He answered God’s call, experienced his sins forgiven,
and was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite by minister
Frank Haynes on March 12, 1944. Orval began a home of his own when he
married Leona Litwiller on November 23, 1947, and they shared 54 years of
married life together. Their home was blessed with five children—two sons
and three daughters—although sadly, Dennis and Kathy passed away in
childhood.
Orval and Leona were married and lived in Michigan for a short time before
relocating to Florida, but with the passage of time Mississippi and New
Mexico were added to the list of locations that they called home. A special
time of service was spent in the mission at Albuquerque, New Mexico and
after the term of service was over, they made Albuquerque their place of
residence until moving back to Florida in 1992. Wherever “home” was located,
it was known as a hospitable place, a place where visitors felt welcome and
loved. Orval loved to visit and form relationships with others, and his mind
was a treasure trove of interesting stories and adventures from the past.
Relationships were not the only things Orval was skilled in building; the
tools of the carpentry trade were familiar in his hands, and he spent many
years working with wood on a variety of projects. His base of knowledge was
broad, and he was willing to share time and talent with others. He also
loved gardening and busied himself caring for his plants as long as his
strength allowed, sharing excess produce with family and friends. Orval had
the gift of maintaining a positive outlook—“Why would I complain, nobody
would want to listen to that”, is what he was known to express. Praying was
important and meaningful to Orval, and after the lonely years following the
loss of his wife, further compounded by declining health and strength, being
a “prayer warrior” gave a sense of purpose to his life.
Left to cherish their memories are one son Ken, of Akron, Ohio, two
daughters: Sandra & Melvin Iutzi of Walnut Hill, Florida, and Karen
& Larry Smith of Surprise Arizona, one brother Bill, and three sisters:
Edna, Helen, and Donna & Kurt Fellows, all of Ithaca Michigan;
sisters-in-law: Vada Peters of Murray, Kentucky and Ellyn Peters of Ithaca,
Michigan; ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Preceding him in
death were his wife Leona, two brothers, one sister, one brother-in-law, one
son and one daughter, and two grandsons.
The funeral service was held at Southern Harbor Mennonite Church on Tuesday,
February 15, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. and officiated by Galen Harms, Cameron
Boeckner, and Wesley Wenger. Burial will follow in Walnut Hill Mennonite
Church Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Marlin Iutzi, Terrill Iutzi, Adam Peters, Alex
Peters, Clifton Smith, Reuben Smith and Jayden Iutzi.
Visitation will be held Monday, February 14, 2022 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00
p.m. at Southern Harbor Mennonite Church.

Peters, Vada Ruth (Buerge)
July 12, 1926 - November 1, 2023
Vada Ruth Buerge Peters was born on July 12, 1926, to Ira
and Hettie Blosser Buerge in Wauseon, Ohio. She peacefully went to meet her
Savior on November 1, 2023, at the age of ninety-seven.
As the oldest of four children, she helped care for her younger siblings,
forming lifelong skills in caring for others. She attended school in
Pettisville, Ohio, and graduated high school in 1944. Upon confession of her
sins, she was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, on March
7, 1939, and spent her life serving the Lord to the best of her ability.
In her youth, she took a correspondence course to learn nursing and moved to
St. Petersburg, Florida to work in a hospital. While she was there, a young
man asked for her hand, and she was married to Herbert Peters on June
27,1948, in Pettisville, Ohio, moving to Harrison, Michigan to begin married
life. One son was born to this union.
Dad and Mom were led to mission work in Chihuahua, Mexico, and spent the
years of 1954-1962 living there, operating a boarding house for native
schoolchildren, and Mom became nurse and midwife for many people in need.
They adopted a baby in Mexico and took him home to Michigan with them.
Mom lived a full life, helping Dad with the business and fostering more than
fifty children over the years. She formed countless friendships and made an
effort to keep up these relationships throughout life. A very difficult time
for her was when their adopted son John was tragically killed as a young
man.
In 1993 Dad and Mom moved to Murray, Kentucky, and adopted a former foster
daughter at the same time. Their sunset years were spent having company,
gardening, and sharing the little they had with anyone in need. They lived a
simple life characterized by economy and practicality. Mom had a heart for
the downtrodden and the wayward and was never afraid to say a word for the
Lord. She often spoke her mind, but those close to her learned to recognize
her soft heart beneath the surface.
After seventy-one years of marriage, Dad was called home to Glory on January
29, 2020. Mom filled her time alone with phone calls and crocheting many

Ramer, Cheryl Jean Miller
April 2, 1953 — January 5, 2026
Cheryl Jean Miller Ramer was born April 2, 1953 in Bedford
Heights, OH, the daughter of Paul and Edna (Guth) Miller, crediting them
with instilling values of faith and ethics. As the oldest of 5 siblings, she
was often depended on for child-care at a young age partly due to her
mother’s struggle with mental illness. During these years Cheryl developed
organizational skills along with taking responsibility that served her
(mostly!) well all through life.
She graduated from Central Christian High School in Kidron, Ohio, Hesston
College and Tabor College in Kansas. Cheryl accepted Jesus as her savior,
was baptized into the Mennonite Church and remained a lifelong member. On
December 27, 1975 Cheryl was united in marriage to Heber Ramer in Bedford
Heights, Ohio. Ten days before her death she was delighted to celebrate
their 50th wedding anniversary which had become a major goal in the last
months.
Cheryl was a social worker at Child Protective Services in Newton, Kansas,
at Halstead Hospital in Halstead, Kansas, and at Harry Hynes Hospice in
Wichita, Kansas. She was the consummate advocate for her clients, often
roping Heber into special after-hours projects in order to more fully meet
the needs of clients. She loved planning events and teaming up with friends
to host a fun time.
They lived in Hesston, Kansas and Harper, Kansas while raising their
children with persistent creativity and interest in their activities. About
4 years ago they moved to Iowa as her lifestyle required evolving
adaptations. Cheryl was a current member of West Union Mennonite Church and
was so comforted that they received her for “who she was deep down” and not
just “some old sick lady who can’t help with anything”.
She found great satisfaction in watching children learn and grow, reminding
her of the hope that was a significant part of her faith. Often when
situations seemed to require an impossible decision, she chose the option
that developed hope for the persons involved. She usually cheered for the
underdog.
Cheryl made relative peace with her mortality early on in the 8.5 years she
lived with the recurrence of cancer, but a growing list of ailments made
daily tasks increasingly difficult and near the end her ability to enjoy
activities was starting to wane.
As her health deteriorated, she focused on seizing opportunities for
celebrating God’s big and small mercies of life. Big ones included visiting
her 50th State (Hawaii!), hauling her walker up the Great Wall of China, and
numerous family gatherings. Small ones included things like volunteering at
Crowded Closet, while still able, and the countless smiles, birds, snacks,
and songs that filled her heart.
Cheryl passed away Monday, January 5, 2026 at her home in rural Parnell at
the age of 72 years. Left to live with her absence are her husband Heber,
daughter Rachelle of Fort Collins, Colorado, son, Nathan (Erin) of rural
Parnell, a brother Terry (Ann) Miller of Coshocton, Ohio, sisters, Julie
Cressman of Las Vegas Nevada and Patti (Bob) Wilson of Newark, Delaware,
brother-in-law, Dave Wiegand of Las Vegas and the many friends she was so
grateful for. Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Karen
Weigand and brother-in-law, Don Cressman.
A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 am Saturday, January 17, 2026, at West
Union Mennonite Church rural Parnell, with lunch and sharing to follow.
Pastor John David Kenney will officiate. There will be no visitation.
A memorial fund has been established for Crooked Creek Christian Camp or
Mennonite Central Committee. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in
Wellman is caring for Cheryl and her family. Messages and tributes may be
sent to the family at www.powellfuneralhomes.com

Reimer, Phyllis (Mueller)
December 18, 1925 - September 20, 2025
Phyllis Reimer, 99, of Freeman, passed away Saturday,
September 20th at the Freeman Regional Nursing Home. A Memorial service will
be held on Saturday, October 4th at 11 AM at the Salem Mennonite (South)
Church of rural Freeman. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
In Memory of Phyllis Elaine Mueller Reimer:
"My Life," by Phyllis Mueller
Freeman Academy, English II, Age 15, 1941
“I was born on my parent’s farm on December 18, 1925, near Freeman, South
Dakota. It happened to be just a week before Christmas that I arrived, so I
made a nice Christmas present for them, Noah and Ida (Preheim) Mueller.
“My parents had both grown up and lived on their family farms before they
were married. My father was a graduate of Freeman Jr. College and had
attended school in Brookings. My mother also attended Freeman Jr. College.
“When I was about two weeks old, on January 2, 1926, my father was taken to
the hospital for an appendix operation, and so on January 3rd I had my first
outing when I moved with my mother to my grandmother’s place. I grew my
first tooth when I was six months old and took my first steps at eleven and
one-half months.
“When I was four, one of my uncles attended school in Wayne, Nebraska, so we
went down to visit him, and the next year we went to Brookings where another
uncle was attending school.
“When I was five, one day in March a brother arrived at our home, and our
parents named him Dale Merlin. From then on, I was no longer the baby of the
family.
“I was six when I started country school. I had five different teachers.
“During the spring of my seventh grade, my mother was taken to the hospital.
She came back home after about four weeks. During part of this time Esther
Nickel came to help us and somehow we managed to cook the meals and keep
things in order. The last part of April, Esther left us, and it was up to me
to carry on. I learned a lot during that summer.
“School started again, and I went back to country school for the last year.
I did not flunk but made my grades successfully and graduated on June 3rd,
1940, in Parker. That summer, I had the privilege of going to Sioux City,
Iowa, twice.
“September 1st arrived, and I was to attend Freeman Academy. I had enjoyed
one week of school when on Saturday evening I became sick and Sunday evening
I was taken to the hospital at Yankton for an appendicitis operation. I
stayed in the hospital for nine days. I had good food, could sleep well, and
enjoyed listening to the radio. I missed three weeks of school. On April 18,
1941, I and several carloads of other students went to Yankton for a music
contest. Along with my Home Economics class, I had the privilege of serving
at the Junior-Senior banquet on May 3. We had a picnic at Milltown when
school closed.
“During the summer, nothing unusual happened, except that the usual farm
work was to be done. In September school started again, and I came back as a
sophomore.
“On November 23rd, I was baptized by Rev. Willard Claassen and became a
member of the Salem Mennonite Church with nineteen other boys and girls.
“Now I am still attending school and what is yet before me I do not know.”
. . .
Phyllis graduated from Freeman Academy and then from Freeman Jr. College.
She worked with her parents on the farm, in the administrative office at
Freeman Jr. College as a secretary, and at Camp Friedenswald, the Mennonite
camp in Michigan, as the head cook for five summers. She went to Germany
after the War with other Mennonite young people to build housing for
refugees. She helped her grandfather, John C. Mueller, with correspondence
involving the Mennonite Central Committee’s assistance to the Mennonites in
Russia.
In the fall of 1955, Phyllis went to Chicago to work as the Dietician for
the Mennonite Biblical Seminary. There were several students there from the
Freeman area. “We were a happy family,” she remembered. Raymond H. Reimer, a
student from Steinbach, Manitoba, was also there. By the end of the first
school year, Phyllis and Raymond were dating seriously. Phyllis accepted
Raymond’s marriage proposal during the summer of 1956 at Camp Friedenswald,
where she had returned to work during the school break. Phyllis and Raymond
spent the next year in Chicago making plans to go into the ministry
together. Raymond graduated and was ordained as a minister, they were
married at the Salem Mennonite Church on June 8, 1957, and after a honeymoon
at the Wisconsin Dells, left for Japan by ship on August 11 for the mission
field.
Phyllis spent 10 years with Raymond in Japan, perhaps the happiest of her
life. They started a church in the coastal city of Nobeoka, on the southern
island of Kyushu. Their son Charles was born there in 1962, followed by son
Tim’s arrival in 1964 when they were back in the States in between their
five-year missionary terms. Phyllis’s parents visited her and her family in
Japan in 1967. Phyllis greatly appreciated their support and that of
Raymond’s family and his home church, Bergthaler Mennonite, in Steinbach,
along with that of the Salem Mennonite Church, and many other relatives and
friends. Phyllis saw the sunrise from the summit of Mount Fuji, walked along
the beach with her boys collecting seashells, and made many happy memories
spending time with church members and friends. She enjoyed learning about
and appreciated the Japanese culture. The Lord blessed their work and in
1969 they left Atago Christian Church in the care of a dear friend, Pastor
Takarabe, and returned to the States to settle in Freeman. Phyllis and
Raymond stayed in contact with the church over the years and enjoyed seeing
Pastor Takarabe and his family again when they visited them in Freeman in
1978. Every year she and church members would exchange greetings, especially
at Christmas, and they would often send a box of Japanese snacks and
candies, much appreciated by her and her boys, and more recently also by her
grandsons.
After their return from Japan, Phyllis returned to working at Freeman Jr.
College and Academy, first in the bookshop and then as a cook, and planned
with Raymond to farm on her homeplace when her parents retired. However,
Raymond fell ill with cancer and passed away in December of 1978, only about
two years after they had moved to her parent’s farm. Phyllis and the boys
spent the following years there with assistance from neighbors, family and
friends and her father who re-took on the role he had just been retiring
from. In 1995 she moved to her parents’ home in Freeman as Charles was
living in Wichita, KS and Tim was living in Sioux Falls. Mom missed Raymond
very much and spoke of him often. She searched for solace in the scripture
passages that they had read together, in her prayers, and in the beauty of
God’s world.
Mom was a devout Christian and a true country girl at heart. She loved
nature and living on the farm where she grew up. She cherished the legacy
and faith of Christian Mueller, Christian Kaufman, and her other ancestors
who first settled the prairie. Mom enjoyed road trips with her family,
including many visits to Raymond’s family in Canada. She loved walks in her
pasture and out to the stock dams, listening to the howls of the coyotes at
night, rock hunting with her rock club friends and with Tim, feeding birds
(especially Cardinals) and squirrels, and visits to gardens, wildlife
refuges, natural history museums, fossil sites, and parks. Mom would plant
flowers by the creek, and in later years, when Tim went out to check the
fence lines she would go along and wait for him by the car.
Mom had a deep appreciation for music. She encouraged her sons to play
instruments or sing in choirs during their school years, and enjoyed church
and community music events as well as the “concerts” that her grandsons
would play for her during each visit. Mom also encouraged her sons to travel
abroad, as she had done in her youth.
Mom cherished time with her grandsons and also enjoyed the company of her
neighbor children who were about the same age. She took many memorable trips
with grandsons Steven, Jake and Zach, including to the Black Hills, Canada,
McCrory Gardens, the zoo and Japanese gardens in Topeka, and t

Ropp, Katie (Hochstedler)
June 11, 1936 - February 13, 2026
Katie (Hochstedler) Ropp, daughter of William and Lizzie
(Miller) Hochstedler was born June 11, 1936, at Thomas, OK. She peacefully
passed away in her home on Friday, February 13, 2026, at the age of 89
years, 8 months, and 2 days.
She surrendered her life to the Lord at a young age and lived faithfully for
her Lord until He called her home.
On June 16, 1955, she was united in marriage to Emery J. Ropp. God blessed
their home with 6 sons and two daughters. Lester [deceased](Ruby Hostetler)
of Seymour, MO; LaWayne (Lynette Yoder-deceased) of Estacada, OR; Lillian
DelValle of Harrisburg, OR; Lavon of Fairland, OK(Lucinda Stelfox); Lynn
(Bernice Beachy-deceased)(Wilma Hershberger) of Fairland, OK; Leaetta (Tim
Rohrer) of Spring Hope, NC; Loyal [deceased] (Melrose Weaver now married to
Jerry Good) of Seymour, MO; Lavern (Shawn Kropf) of Seymour, MO.
In March of 1968 they moved from Iowa to Seymour, MO. She was a woman who
believed in doing her best in whatever capacity the Lord called her and
always freely gave her all. She was gifted in many ways and known for her
love of cooking and willingly hosted many guests and hospitably served them.
She was a particular and capable seamstress and used that talent for God’s
work in altering many suit coats. She always maintained a strong faith in
God’s providence in spite of the tragic passing of her mother on her 21st
birthday, and years later, in the sudden passing of two of her sons. These
events deepened her faith in God, so that in her later years, an oft
repeated phrase she used was as follows: “I am gripping tightly to God’s
hand.” She was fond of animals, especially horses and birds. At 89, she was
still capable of shooting 6 hapless squirrels who ventured too near her bird
feeder and met their untimely death. She wasn’t one to joke a lot, but had a
healthy sense of humor. Those who liked to tease-found her an easy candidate
for their humor. Her rebuttal quips were “big deal” and “hang it up.”
After her husband of 55 years passed away in 2010, she missed him
tremendously and longed to join him there. She would often say, “I’m waiting
the call,” or “I’m in the waiting room and the latch is on the outside.” Her
family and friends would then remind her that her time on earth wasn’t over
yet, and that God still had a work for her to do; namely, in praying for
those she loved.
In 2021, at the age of 84, she left Seymour where she had lived for 53 years
and moved to Spring Hope, NC, to live next to her daughter Leaetta. They
built her a cozy cottage and patiently and lovingly cared for her as needed.
She was warmly welcomed by the Mill Creek Mennonite Church. They were her
new “church family” and were faithful in visiting and encouraging her. She
felt loved and accepted, which made the transition at her age so much
easier.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Emery J. Ropp, two sons,
Lester and Loyal, and two daughters-in-law, Bernice and Lynette, and two
great grandchildren.
Besides her family, she is survived by one brother, Lester Hochstedler.
Her presence and her faithful prayers will be greatly missed, but we are
grateful for her faithful example.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude for the care and
compassion felt during this time. The thoughtfully-planned meals and snacks
and the hospitable lodging were greatly appreciated. The Church at Mill
Creek is deeply grateful to the Ozark Mennonite Church for being willing to
host the funeral and burial of a well-loved, dear sister of their
congregation.
