Shelly, Paul Zeager
Paul Z. Shelly, 91, of Brewton,
Ala., died Oct. 13, 2010, in the local Westgate Village nursing
facility. He was born Sept. 19, 1919, to Benjamin and Bertha Zeager
Shelly near Manheim, Pa.
After farming several years, he moved to Brewton with his wife, Verna,
and family in 1950. He and Verna gave leadership to a new rural church,
and he was ordained in 1952 for Bethel Mennonite Community Church. He
pastored for 40 years plus gave leadership and support for another 25
years. He supported his family by carpentry, a talent and skill that he
completely enjoyed.
He was always attuned to the needs of others and gave many hours to
Mennonite Disaster Service work all across the Southeast. He
volunteered three years in construction in converting a warehouse to a
church in Brooklyn and various other building projects in New York City
and Camp Deerpark. In his senior years he gave many hours helping build
and establish a local volunteer fire company in Dixonville, Ala.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Verna Shank Shelly of Brewton;
four children, Eugene Shelly and his wife, Martine, Pauline Mickelson
and her husband, Jim, Arlan Shelly and his wife, Lawana, and LaMar
Shelly and his wife, Sara; nine grandchildren and 14
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Bethel Mennonite Community Church. Burial
was in the church’s cemetery.

Buschert, David
David Buschert, 78, of Goshen,
Ind., died Nov. 1, 2010. He was born Jan. 22, 1932, to Chester and Mary
Edna (Snyder) Buschert near Preston, Ont.
He married Joyce Stutzman of Milford, Neb., on Dec. 28, 1954.
He received an associate’s degree from Hesston (Kan.) College, a
bachelor’s degree from Goshen College and a degree in civil engineering
from Indiana Institute of Technology, Fort Wayne. He retired in 1996 as
a civil engineer from Columbia Gas of Ohio.
He and Joyce lived in the Toledo, Ohio, area for 26 years, where they
were members of Toledo Mennonite Church. In 2002 they moved to South
Bend, where they were members of Kern Road Mennonite Church. In April
of this year they moved to the Greencroft Community in Goshen.
He enjoyed photography, reading and travel, but his lifelong hobby was
his interest in trains and railroads. After moving to South Bend he
became a member of Hesston Steam Museum in Hesston, Ind., where he
spent many enjoyable hours volunteering. In the past few years his
health problems prevented him from living life to the fullest, but he
was accepting and appreciative of what he was still able to enjoy. He
was a gentle and loving man.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce; two daughters, Beth Hooley and her
husband, Mark, of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Jill Kennel of South Bend;
and a granddaughter, Nadia Zaid of Mandoza, Argentina.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert and Donald Buschert.
Funeral services were held at Goshen College Mennonite Church.

Kauffman, Alvin D.
Alvin D. Kauffman, 96, of
Goshen, Ind., died Nov. 14, 2010, at Goshen General Hospital. He was
born Sept. 13, 1914, to Joseph and Agnes (Andrews) Kauffman in Kenmare,
N.D.
He married Beulah E. Good on April 17, 1938, in Cheraw, Colo.
He was a pastor at Crystal Springs (Kan.) Mennonite Church from 1956 to
1964 and also taught in the Kansas Public Schools from 1958 to 1966.
From 1966 to 1976 he taught at Brookdale Junior High School in Elkhart.
In his retirement he pursued his passion for woodworking and carving.
He became an accomplished carver of ducks and other waterfowl. His
intricately carved and beautifully painted ducks are enjoyed in
numerous homes and offices across the U.S. and in several other
countries. He built numerous pieces of furniture for Beulah, members of
his family and many friends. He was a member of the Indiana Retired
Teachers Association and longstanding member of Belmont Mennonite
Church in Elkhart.
Survivors include his wife, Beulah; two daughters, Barbara Powell and
her husband, Charles, of Champaign, Ill., and Ruth Zehr and her
husband, Edward, of Fox Lake, Ill.; a son, Ralph Kauffman and his wife,
Laurel, of Kansas City, Mo.; a sister, Zola Irwin and her husband,
Paul, of Fort Morgan, Colo.; eight grandchildren and 13
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers.
Memorial service was held at Belmont Mennonite Church, Elkhart.

Mumaw, R. Wayne
R. Wayne Mumaw, 69, died Nov.
3, 2010, at Glendora Health Care Center in Wooster, Ohio. He was born
July 21, 1941, to Ralph and Mildred (Schrock) Mumaw in Smithville.
He graduated from Smithville High School in 1959 and acquired a
bachelor of science degree in physical education from Friends
University in Wichita, Kan. During his 1-W service at Goshen (Ind.)
College, he also coached basketball at Bethany Christian High School.
For many years he worked as an area representative for Mennonite Mutual
Aid, serving the churches in 12 Midwestern states. More recently he was
self-employed in various jobs, including flea marketing and driving and
delivering for the Amish. He attended Oak Grove Mennonite Church in
Smithville and enjoyed volunteer time at MCC Connections in Kidron. He
was a loving and caring father and a sports enthusiast.
Survivors include two sons, Rodney Mumaw and his wife, Wendy, of
Mansfield, Texas, and Ryan Leahy of Wichita, Kan.; a daughter, Lisa
Navarro and her husband, David, of Wichita, Kan.; two brothers, Charles
Mumaw of Goshen, Ind., and Steve Mumaw of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two
sisters, Mary Fast of Guymon, Okla., and Janet Klopfenstein of
Smithville; and five grandchildren.
Memorial services were held at Auble Funeral Home in Orrville.

Wolfer, LaVerne
LaVerne Wolfer, 82, of
Hutchinson, Kan., died Nov. 25, 2010, at Pleasant View Home in Inman.
She was born March 15, 1928, to Jesse D. and Ada P. Schrock Hartzler in
Harrisonville, Mo.
She was an assistant librarian at Central Junior High and later Liberty
Junior High Schools in Hutchinson. A Hutchinson resident since 1964,
she was a member of South Hutchinson Mennonite Church and served as the
church librarian and directed the church choir and junior choir. She
was active with the Hutchinson Community Concert, the Hutchinson Choral
Society, and sang in the Bethany College Oratorio Society in Lindsborg.
She sang with the Oratorio Society in Carnegie Hall in New York City.
She was a member of the Hesston College Alumni Association and the WMSC
sewing club. She enjoyed traveling and had been to China, Europe and
Australia. She was a 1946 graduate of Hesston Academy and attended
Hesston College.
She married Lowell A. Wolfer on Feb. 8, 1948, in Wellman, Iowa. He
preceded her in death on Oct. 7, 1994.
Survivors include a son, Gary Wolfer and his wife, Kay, of Buhler; two
daughters, Cheryl Wolfer of Port Angeles, Wash., and Bonnie Ballard and
her husband, Mick, of Hutchinson; three brothers, Victor Hartzler and
his wife, Marlene, of Bella Vista, Ark., Dale Hartzler and his wife,
Meg, of Louisville, Colo., and Robert Hartzler and his wife, Charlene,
of Coralville, Iowa; a sister, Orpha Yoder and her husband, Richard, of
Wayland, Iowa; six grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lowell, and two brothers.
A graveside service was held at Penwell-Gable Cemetery and Mausoleum in
Hutchinson. Memorial services were held at South Hutchinson Mennonite
Church.

Hershberger, Simon
Simon Hershberger, 90, of
Bird-in-Hand, Pa., died Dec. 10, 2010. He was born Sept. 23, 1920, to
Daniel and Katieann Beachy Hershberger near Farmerstown, Ohio.
He married Esta Miller in Kalispell, Mont., during his years of
Civilian Public Service in Glacier National Park. They were married 62
years before she preceded him in death in March 2008.
He co-owned Balco Machine Co. in Farmerstown for 21 years. He held a
lifetime membership in the Mennonite Information Center in Berlin,
Ohio, and was a 31-gallon blood donor. He loved to read, discuss
politics, listen to classical and bluegrass music, clear the meadows
and fence rows of weeds and hike in Montana and Arizona.
A faithful member of Walnut Creek (Ohio) Mennonite Church, he served as
elder, Sunday school and vacation Bible school superintendent and
Sunday school teacher. He was an associate member of Stumptown
Mennonite Church in Bird-in-Hand and Sunnyslope Mennonite Church in
Phoenix, Ariz., where he and his wife spent 22 winters. In 1975 they
served in Buckeye, Ariz., in voluntary service, and he had also
volunteered at Ten Thousand Villages in Pennsylvania and Glencroft
Thrift Shop in Arizona. He lived in Bird-in-Hand for the past 12
summers.
Survivors include two daughters, Joanne Yoder and her husband, Steve,
of Glendale, Ariz., and Myrna Smucker and her husband, John, of
Bird-in-Hand; two brothers, Henry Hershberger and his wife, Ruth, and
Daniel Hershberger, all of Sugarcreek, Ohio; three sisters-in-law,
Katieann Hershberger of Millersburg, Ohio, Ellen Hershberger of Dublin,
Ohio, and Fannie Hershberger of Dover, Ohio; a brother-in-law, Moses
Kaufman of Sugarcreek, Ohio, and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Esta; an infant son, Jonas; three
sisters, Ada and Mattie Hershberger and Emma Kramer; and three
brothers, Roy, Jonas and Emmanuel Hershberger.
Services were held at Walnut Creek Mennonite Church. Burial was in
Walnut Creek Mennonite Cemetery.
