SECOND OBITUARY OF ELIZABETH:
Mrs. Elizabeth Kauffman passed
away at her home in Wayland on Friday, January 10th. Mrs. Kauffman
suffered an injury about a month ago in a fall and her condition became
critical several days ago when she developed pneumonia. She ran the
journey of life in 87 years, 3 months, and 22 days. It is a path
marked with deeds of kindness and cheer. Flowers, not thorns, and
sunshine not shadow, did she scatter everywhere. With these she was
lavish. Another name is stricken from the ever lessening roll of our
old settlers. Her life work was done and well done.
In her childhood she came with her parents to Henry County where she
has resided ever since. In the fall of 1869 she was united in marriage
with Christian Kauffman who preceded her in death on October 21, 1909.
To this union were born 4 daughters and 5 sons of whom all arise and
call her blessed. All children grew to manhood and womanhood, the
youngest daughter, Mrs. Anna Goldsmith, having preceded her to the
Great Beyond on October 31, 1931.
In her youth she was baptized by Rev. Joseph Goldsmith and received
into the fellowship of the Mennonite church. She experienced the
hardships and trials of early pioneer life, but always found in her
Savior the good Shepherd, who gave her strength and patience to stand
firm amidst all the disappointments and trying experiences of life.
She leaves to mourn her passing three daughters, Mrs. Katie Johnson and
Mrs. Emma Allen of Wayland and Mrs. Mattie Bates of near Trenton; five
sons, William, Edward, John, Christian, and Homer all of Wayland;
16 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, also a brother and a
sister.
The funeral services were held at her late home at 1:30 o'clock Sunday
afternoon and were in charge of her pastor, Rev. Elmer Basinger of the
Wayland Mennonite Church, assisted by Rev. J . J. Pritchard of the M.
E. Church. Mrs. Clara Wenger sang a solo and Mrs. Izyel Wenger was her
accompanist. The casket bearers were her grandchildren: Ralph, Max, and
Harold Kauffman, Bernard Bates, Donald Goldsmith, and Dale Bain.
Interment was made in the Finley Cemetery.
God calls our loved ones, but we lose not wholly
What He hath given;
They live on earth in though and deed, as truly
As in Heaven.
