Jess, Levi;   Kauffman, Jake F.;   Kauffman, Samuel A.


JESS - Levi, son of Marx and Gertrude (Kaufman) Jess, was born Dec. 5, 1898; died near Arthur, Ill., on Mar. 20, 1971; aged 72 yr., 3 mo., 15 days. He was married to Annie Hochstedler, Oct. 17, 1922. She died Feb. 22, 1970. He united with the Old Order Amish Church in his youth, remaining faithful to the end. He was ordained a deacon in 1939.
To this union 8 children were born: Mrs. Henry (Gertrude) Schrock, Mrs. Ervin (Mattie) Yoder, Mrs. Reuben (Edna) Yoder, Mrs. Ura (Sarah) Herschberger, Lester, Ervin, and John, all of Arthur, Ill. He is survived by two brothers and one sister: Dave Yoder, of Arthur, Joe Yoder, Kendalville, Ind., and Eliza Miller, Dover, Del.; also 39 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his wife, son Henry, 2 grandchildren, parents, 1 brother, and 4 sisters.
Services were held in the family home Mar. 23, 1971, by Bishop Henry A. Miller, burial in Yoder Cemetery near Arthur.

Kauffman. -
Jake F. Kauffman of Arcola, Ill., was born Mar. 16, 1887, died Dec. 28, 1971, age 84 years, 8 mo. 12 days. He was a member of the O. O. Amish Church. A son of the Late Abe M. and Mary J. (Miller) Kauffman. (Brother to Samuel of the proceeding obituary.)* He was married to Fannie E. Stutzman in 1907 who predeceased him in 1956. Survivors are 4 sons, Alvin J., Eli J., Melvin J. of Arthur, Ill., and Joe W. of Arcola; 3 daughters, (Bertha) Mrs. Anson Miller, (Edna Mae) Mrs. William J. Miller, both of Sullivan, Ill., and (Mary Ann) Mrs. Dan S. Miller, of Arthur; one brother, Joel J. of Arthur; 25 grand-children, and 33 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held in the home of his son Joe, Dec. 31, 1971, by Lewis Hostetler of Shipshewana, Ind., and Bish. Dan A. Miller of the home church. Burial in the Miller Cemetery near Arthur. Ill.  [*See Samuel A. Kauffman below]

Kauffman. - Samuel A. Kauffman of Arthur, Ill., was born July 30, 1894, died Dec. 23, 1971, age 77 years, 4 mo. 23 days. He was a member of the O. O. Amish Church. A son of the late Abe M. and Mary J. (Miller) Kauffman. Survi-vors are 10 children, Fred, Ervin, (Cora) Mrs. Menno J. Herschberger, Albert, Levi, Raymond, (Tillie) Mrs, Ervin Herschberger, Ella, Carrie, and Edward. 45 grand-children, 26 great-grandchildren, Two brothers, Jake and Joel; and many other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by two wives and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Dec. 25, 1971, in the home of his son Edward, by Andy A. Schrock and Amos Miller in large house, and Jeff A. Miller and Steve A. Kauffman in small house. Burial in Otto Cemetery, Arthur, Illinois.
