Hartzler, Levi C.

GOSHEN — Levi C. Hartzler, 93, of 1225 Greencroft Drive, died at The Cottages in Greencroft Gables at 6 a.m. Saturday (April
20,2002). He was born on March 20, 1909, in Bellefontaine, Ohio, the son of Anchie and Rhoda (Yoder) Hartzler. On Sept. 23, 1939, at Mennonite Home Mission in Chicago, he married Irene Mavercik; she died on Dec. 12, 1997.
Survivors include a daughter Mrs. Dwight (Carol) Grieser of Goshen; a son, Ronald Lee Hartzler of Newton, Kan.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Harley (Bertha) King of West Liberty, Ohio, and Mrs. Russell (Orpha) Reed of St. Paris, Ohio.
Mr. Hartzler was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers.
A 1935 graduate of Goshen College, he received his master’s degree from Northwestern University in 1940. From 1935-37, he served as pastor at Mennonite Home Mission in Chicago, and was then a relief worker in Spain until 1939.
From 1939-49, he was a member of the Goshen College faculty, and was ordained a deacon at College Mennonite Church on June 27,1943 — a position he kept for 32 years. He was secretary for relief and service and information services for the Mennonite Board of Missions between 1949-59.
He taught English, Bible literature and cadet teaching from 1959 until his retirement in 1974 for Elkhart Community Schools.
Friends and family may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in the Koinonia Room at College Mennonite Church, where the memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. The Revs. Firman Gingerich and Klaudia Smucker will preside, and burial will follow at Violett Cemetery.

Nora G. Herr, 92, died Friday evening April 19, 2002 at the Mount Hope Church Home, Manheim, PA where she had lived for 10 years. Nora was born March 8, 1910 in Rapho Twp., Lancaster Co., PA to Albert and Annie Gibble Faus. She was married to John Lester Herr in 1949
She was a member of the former Gantz Mennonite Church, Manheim, PA.Years ago she was a sewing machine operator for the former Gerberich-Payne shoe factory, Mount Joy, where she worked for 25 years.
Survived by her daughters Doris Whitt and Ruth Ann Herr,. and 7 sisters and 4 brothers. She was predeceased by her panents and he husband

Hershberger, Anna Mae, 81, of Millersburg, Ohio died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002. She was born Oct. 12, 1920, in Millersburg to John J. and Fanny (Kuhns) Miller.
Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Oran Hershberger and children, Elsie (Bob) Carper and Paul (Linda) Hershberger, both of Florida, Albert (Leona) Hershberger of Millersburg, Mabel Hershberger of Fredericksburg, Ruth (Dan) Weaver of Berlin and Mary Jane (Roy) Kline of Walnut Creek; 19 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brothers, Albert (Beulah) Miller and Atlee (Viola) Miller, both of Millersburg; sisters, Esther (Raymond) Miller and Nora (Levi) Sommers, both of Millersburg, and Elva Raber, Mary M. Sunday School. She and her husband operated a stand at Central Market for many years, selling poultry, vegetables, baked goods
and other homemade items.
Services: New Danville Mennonite Church, 103 Marticville Road,
Lancaster, Pa. on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Curtiss Kanagy and Rev. Jay C. Garber officiating. Interment
in adjoining cemetery.
Survived by four sons, twins Galen A. of Dillsburg and Elvin B. of Mechanicsburg, C. Marlin of Alpharetta, Ga. and Joseph M. of Mechanicsburg; two daughters, Rosalie H. Roland and Rachel H. Gordon, both of Mechanicsburg; 16 grandchildren; a step-grandchild; and 19 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth and two sisters, Ellen Smith and Ruth Hess.
Funeral service was March 16, 2002 at the Slate Hill Mennonite Church, Camp Hill, with the Rev. W. Lynn Shertzer officiating. Burial will be in Slate Hill Cemetery, Lower Allen Twp.

Hochstedler, Mary Kempf, 93, of Wellman died Thursday, April 25, 2002 in University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, following a brief illness.
Private graveside services were Friday, April 26 in East Union Cemetery rural Kalona. A memorial service was Saturday April 27, in Powell Funeral Home, Wellman, with Pastor Larry Rediger officiating.
Born January 4, 1909 in Gohner, Nebraska, she was the daughter of John and Eliza (Swartzendruber) Kempf. She grew up in Shickley, Nebraska and moved to Iowa in 1930 where she lived with her aunt Barb Swartzendruber. She worked in Iowa City as a cook and house-keeper.
She was united in marriage to Monroe S. Hochstedler December 24, 1931 in the Kalona home of Dan Fisher. The couple lived in the Wellman community where Mrs. Hochstedler was a homemaker.
She was baptized in the Salem Mennonite Church in Shickley and, later, she and her husband were baptized in the Jordon River. Mrs. Hochstedler was a member of Kalona Christian Fellowship and was associated with Mennonite Renewal Services.
Survivors include two daugh-ters. Rose and husband Marlin Brenneman of Iowa City and Iva and husband Don Showalter of Kalona; three sons, Keith and wife Elaine Hochstedler of Iowa City, Kenneth Hochstedler of Wellman and Rowen and wife Susan Hochstedler of Newburyport, Massachusetts and former wife Carol Hochstedler of Kalona; twelve grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and three brothers, Roy Kempf, Jacob Kempf, and Jay Kempf.

Horst, Chester K., 81, 430 Orrville, Ohio, died Oct. 6, 2002, at Smithville-Western Care Center, Wooster,Ohio while surrounded by his loving family. He was the eldest son of Albert and Alma (Kornhaus) Horst. His wife, Dorothy (Byler) Horst, whom he married Aug. 28, 1943, at Oak Grove Mennonite Church near Smithville, Ohio
Survived by his wife, a son, Alvin Horst and his wife, Sue of Orrville, three daughters, Mrs. Richard (Laurel) Horst of Orrville, Mrs. Ed (Janet) Studer of Orrville and Mrs. Mike (Barb) Underwood of Salem, W.Va. Horst also adored his grandchildren, Brad, Tisha, Sasha, Ronald and Gerald Horst, Tracie Studer, Dexter, Dottie and Chet Underwood, along with his six great-grandchildren, Marica Horst, Collin and Conner Studer, Dylan, Maddison and Benjamin Underwood.
