Miller faced deadlines with skill, humor
ELKHART -- Carl S. Miller, who was news editor of The Truth for more than 20 years, died at 8:14 p.m. Thursday at Elkhart General Hospital.
He was 86 and lived with his wife, Carol, at 125 Hollywood Ave.
As news editor, Mr. Miller ran the newspaper's copy desk. He decided which stories The Truth would publish and on which pages those stories would appear. He laid out the news pages, wrote headlines and edited stories from Truth staffers and wire services. Every day was a race against the clock, making sure work was done and done well and in time for the press deadline.
Mr. Miller's skill and sense of humor would diffuse the tensions that mounted as deadline approached.
Often, after production was finished on a particularly challenging morning, Mr. Miller would return to the newsroom from the composing room where stories were set in type and pages prepared for the press, take his seat at the copy desk, look up at the staff and say: "Easy money." It wasn't easy money, but he made it look so.
Mr. Miller came to The Truth in 1952 from the Middletown (Ohio) Journal. He worked for two years as a general assignment reporter, seven years as city editor and 21 years as news editor. He retired in 1982.
He was born on June 3, 1917, in Wellman, Iowa, to Paul Anson and Maude (Fisher) Miller. He married Carol Beller on May 9, 1943, in Flanagan, Ill. She survives with two sons, Peter W. (Marilyn Graber) Miller and Evan J. (Gwen Penner) Miller, both of Goshen; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Sister Therese (Kathryn) Miller, Dubuque, Iowa.
A son, Carl Miller Jr., a sister and a brother are deceased.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 5 to 7 p.m. today in the Koinonia Room at College Mennonite Church in Goshen, where a memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday. Pastors Firman Gingerich and Klaudia Smucker will officiate. Cremation has taken place.
Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen, is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Miller graduated in 1936 from Center High School, Kalona, Iowa, and from Goshen College in 1940. He served in the Civilian Public Service in Washington, D.C., for four years. He was active in the Dunes Kalamazoo Orchid Society. He was a member of College Mennonite Church.
Memorials may be given to College Mennonite Church for College Mennonite Church and Fraternidad Cristiana, Mexico.
