Zehr, Oliver
Oliver Zehr was born August 11,
1915, at Albany, Oregon, the sixth child of eight born to Peter and
Katherine (Jantzi) Zehr. He passed away on January 11, 2005, at a
care facility in Scio, Oregon, at the age of 89 years and 5 months.
Oliver spent most of his youth on the family farm located just south of
Albany along the Southern Pacific railroad line. His early
schooling was obtained at the Grand Prairie country school and Albany
High. The Zehr family attended Fairview Mennonite Church, where
Oliver was baptized.
During the depression, in 1933, his father was forced to sell the farm,
and Oliver spent the next several years on the road working at a
variety of jobs.
While visiting friends in Ohio, he met his future wife, Mary
Helmuth. The two were married in Louisville, Ohio, on March 13,
1945. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Oregon.
Here they purchased a farm between Lebanon and Tangent, which would be
their home for 28 years. Three children were born to them: Wilbur
Ray (1946), Ruth Naomi (1949), and Paul Lowell (1952).
Oliver worked for the Southern Pacific Railway for 27 years until his
retirement in 1974. Occasionally he would meet homeless tramps
riding the rails and invite them along home for supper and maybe the
night. The grandchildren remember that his favorite song was Life
is Like a Mountain Railroad.
After his retirement, Oliver and Mary moved to Halsey, where they lived
until 1993. Mary passed away in 1999 after a long battle with
Alzheimer's disease.
Oliver loved history and travel. In his later years he returned
to school and earned both a high school diploma and a bachelor's
degree. His travels took him to Europe, Israel, and South and
Central America. His unusual personality and wit made an impact
wherever he went, and the family's memories are colored by many
"Grandpa" stories.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mary; his parents, Peter and
Katie; two sisters, Eda Conrad and Mary Lind; and three brothers,
Milton, Wilbert, and Alvin. He is survived by his three children,
Wilbur (Wilma) Zehr of Halsey, Oregon; Ruth (Mrs. Daniel) Hertzler of
Chewalah, Washington; and Paul (Mary) Zehr of Halsey, Oregon; a sister
and brother, Viola King and Ray Zehr, both of Hesston, Kansas;
twenty-three grandchildren, and thirty-three great-grandchildren.
