GRANGER -- Ronald Owen Martin, 68, went home to the Lord at 7:33 a.m. Saturday (April 15, 2006) at his home in Granger after a seven-year struggle with Parkinson's disease with dementia. Ron was born Dec. 1, 1937, in Goshen to Ellis Mervin and Clyda Isadora (Geiser) Martin, both deceased and had lived in Elkhart County until he married on Sept. 3, 1960.
He and his bride, Janice Marie Birky, who survives her husband, served in Mennonite Voluntary Service in Aibonito, Puerto Rico, from October 1960 to March 1964. While in Puerto Rico, their daughter, Janell Lyn Martin, who survives her father, was born. Upon their return, Ron settled in Granger, designing and building his home in which he died. Ron and his wife were foster parents for about six years, giving interim homes for 10 children, infant to age four. In 1970, a son, Mark Ronald Martin was born, who survives his father. Both children live in Granger.
Also surviving are two grandchildren, Albert and Elizabeth, both of Granger; three siblings, Kenneth M. (Sally) Martin of Indianapolis, Alan F. (Earline) Martin of Great Bend, Kan., and Dottie Jones of Elkhart; 11 nieces and nephews; one uncle, Robert (Beulah) Martin of Ohio; and one aunt, Fern (Geiser) Miller of Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Ron worked as a mechanical/electrical designer for most of his career, working at Church Growth Services, among others, and ending his career using his expertise in the plumbing department at Menards, where he was on the opening stock team when Menards was built in Elkhart. He retired from there in April of 2004, after about 10 years of service. Ron grew up in the Mennonite Church, beginning his walk with Jesus at age 12. Ron served as Pastor of New Life Fellowship for 10 years with a heart for small congregation outreach. His greatest love was his Lord and letting people know that they matter to Him. Over the years, Ron enjoyed woodworking, golf, bowling, reading and music. Ron used his singing ability to the glory of his Heavenly Father and many people enjoyed his bass tones. One of his favorites was, "I Bowed on My Knees and Cried Holy."

Miller, Neva Abby Beck
June 13, 1917 - Nov. 22, 2006
Neva Abby Miller was born June 13, 1917 in Harvey County, KS, the second daughter of Thad and Henrietta McFarlane Beck. She was the last remaining survivor of her immediate family. She attended Zimmerdale schools through eighth grade and her high school years at Hesston Academy. During high school, she sang in numerous choral groups. As she grew up, she was taught to work hard with few modern conveniences. After high school, she worked at F.W. Woolworth’s in Newton, managing the hardware department for five years. During that time she met and married Waldo Miller on May 25, 1941.
Shortly after their marriage, Waldo was drafted and spent 3 years in Civilian Public Service. During Waldo’s service in CPS, she moved with him to Harrisburg PA, where she also worked at the local Woolworth’s. From PA, they moved back to Hesston, then Hutchinson and to Harper to become a pastor’s wife as Waldo began his ministry. She was a faithful pastor’s wife. Entertaining many visiting pastors and families - many at short notice. She was gifted at serving delicious meals with limited resources.
Neva suffered an acute bout of rheumatoid arthritis in her late 40’s which limited her physical activities. The family moved back to Hesston in 1972 to pastor at Hesston Inter-Mcnnonitc Church. In 25 years of marriage they had moved 17 times.
She loved spending time with her grandchildren and entertaining family and friends especially during the holidays. In 1986 Neva initiated a Breakfast Club with her close friends from church, meeting weekly in local restaurants. She always enjoyed a great cup of coffee and was a great coffee conisseur often mixing different brands to achieve the best flavor.
In 1996 Neva was honored with an award of Sunday School Teacher of the Year. She had taught Sunday School to all ages for more than 60 years. Neva’s children and grandchildren were her greatest pride and joy.
She leaves Leo and Sheryl Miller of Ellsworth KS, children Craig and Julie, Scott and Erin of Rowlett, TX., Denise and Tony Douglas of Oklahoma City. Daryl, who died in 1986, Carol Miller, children Brad and Laura, Daniel and Alyssa, of Dillsburg, PA, Derek and Melanie, Benjamin, of Mechanicsburg, PA. Kevin and Valerie, Kara of Dillsburg, PA. John and Joy Miller, John, Jr, James and Abby of Farmers Branch TX. Joana and Gary Oswald, McPherson, children Julie and Brian Wedel, Kaylee and Collin, Moundridge, Lucas also of McPherson. Jaynette and Dan Miller, Bryant of Goessel, KS., Leslie and Lyndl Duerksen, Ami Miller and Vaughn Miller of Hesston. Judy and Tim Richert, Ty, Jami and Troy of Buhler. Janice and Jim
Schroeder, Zach and Mallory of Newton. Scott and Wanda Miller, Levi,
Karla and Jill of Hesston.
Waldo passed away in July 2004. In September 2004, Neva went to live in the home of her youngest son Scott and his family until her death. She spent many happy hours with the grandchildren as they helped her with her pills tie her shoes, and bring her favorite snack POPCORN. She was blessed to spend her last days in Scott and Wanda's home, with family she cherished.
Neva was a great prayer for her children and grandchildren, living her life as a true servant of Christ, blessing all the lives she touched. Mother, we will miss your prayers and your sweet smile. You have been our blessing and we will continue to live as you have taught us - to be Servants for Him!
