She was born March 8, 1911 at Mountain Lake, Cottonwood Co., MN to Abraham P. and Elizabeth (Goosen) Quiring. Abraham was born December 20, 1887 and died February 2, 1972. Elizabeth was born April 1, 1885 and died February 8, 1920.

On June 14, 1948 at Mountain Lake, Frieda was married to David H. Toews, who was born June 14, 1902 and died February 24, 1971.

Surviving are a son-in-law, Garywayne Dennison, 3 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, two sisters, Adeline Friesen and Geneva (Waldo) Stoesz, and a sister-in-law, Elva Quiring.

A daughter, Rowena Dennison and a brother, Sam Quiring preceded her in death.

Frieda's mother died Feb 8, 1920, due to influenza when Frieda was 9 years old and her brother, Sam, was 6. Her father married Katherine Goertzen and two more children were added to the family.

Frieda received her education at the country school near their farm. In 1930 she was baptized by Rev. I. J. Dick and became a lifelong member of First Mennonite Church, Mountain Lake. She sang in the Girls Chorus and also was one of the original sixteen members of First Mennonite Mission Society, which was organized Oct 4, 1931, and met in the homes of the members.

In 1926 her parents purchased a farm southwest of Mountain Lake. There she took care of her two younger sisters and helped with the housework and garden and farm chores. In 1937 Frieda and her brother, Sam, purchased the home farm north of town on which they had been born and started farming on their own.
On June 14, 1948, Frieda and David H. Toews were married at First Mennonite Church. They farmed the Toews home place north of Butterfield. One daughter, Rowena Deneen, was born to them in 1949. After retiring from farming, Frieda & Dave purchased a home in Mountain Lake. Dave died Feb 24, 1971. Frieda continued living in her home until 1985. She then moved to Cincinnati, OH, where she lived with her daughter Rowena & Garywayne Dennison and their three daughters for the next 25 years. She was well taken care of.

On January 1st, 2011, her only daughter, Rowena Dennison, died of a brain tumor. This was very hard on Frieda. While Ro was undergoing treatment, Frieda moved to a nursing home near their home in Cincinnati. Garywayne and the girls visited and cared for her every day. She was truly loved. She reached the milestone of her 100th birthday in March and was looking forward to going home and meeting her Lord and Savior. Her prayer was answered on July 15 at 1 a.m.

Memorial services were held July 25, 2011 at Sturm Funeral Chapel, Mountain Lake, MN with burial in Mountain Lake Cemetery, Mountain Lake, MN.

Surviving are children, Clara (Leroy) Sommers; Raymond (Marty); Viola (Rob) Wittmer; Andrew (Ruth); Marcus (Phoebe); and Donnie (Brenda); 17 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and his siblings, Roman, Eli, Lydia Ann Miller, triplet Alma Byler, Mary Yoder, Sarah Hershberger; Walter; and Samuel.

His brothers and sisters, Daniel, Katie, Levi, Noah, Abraham, 2 of the triplets Alvin and Alta, John, and 2 infants preceded him in death.

He was employed at East Ohio Limestone for almost 35 years and 19 of those years farmed the reclaimed mining land. During retirement he worked at the Hartville Market Place for 15 years. He was a 58-year member of Maple Grove Mennonite Church.

Memorial services were held October 14, 2011 at Maple Grove Mennonite Church, Hartville, Stark Co., Ohio with burial in Walnut Grove Cemetery, Hartville.

Troyer, David W., 68, of Shipshewana, IN died April 7, 2011 at Ft. Wayne, IN from heart problems. He was born March 6, 1943 at Lagrange, IN to Glenn and Luella (Christner) Troyer.

SHIPSHEWANA -- Elmer M. Troyer, 94, of Shipshewana, died at 7 a.m. Friday, Aug. 26, 2011, at his daughter's residence near Topeka.

He was born Feb. 22, 1917, in Leinptytown, Ohio, to Mose A. and Lizzie (Miller) Troyer. In May 1945, he married Katie D. Schlabach. She died July 17, 1985. On July 4, 1990, he married Barbara Hochstetler. She survives.

Surviving are son Edwin D. Troyer of Cambridge, Ohio; daughters Susan (Martin) Hochstetler of Monte Vista, Colo., Elizabeth (Leroy) Miller of Topeka, Mary Ellen (John) Troyer of Sugarcreek, Ohio, and Esta (Vernon) Miller of West Union, Ohio; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and five stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.

Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today and all day Sunday at the Christie Schlabach residence, 155 Union St., Shipshewana. Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the same residence. Burial will be in Miller Cemetery, LaGrange. Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, Middlebury, is handling arrangements.

He was born March 13, 1921 at Shelbyville, IL to Andrew J. and Ella Elma (Unzicker) Ulrich. Andrew was born January 11, 1880 and died November 17, 1965. Ella was born February 7, 1889 and died March 16, 1971.

On July 4, 1997 at Fisher, IL he was married to Fern Ida Grieser (Massanari), who was born December 22, 1925 and survives. His first marriage was June 12, 1945 to Miriam Bachman who died December 26, 1995.

Surviving are children, Cheryl (George) Ryniak; Joyce (Jim) Klokkenga; Diane (Harley) Geiser; Douglas (Jenell) Ulrich; 4 step-children, David (Nancy) Massanari; Annette (Michael) Sommer; Elizabeth (Michael) Ingold; and Dennis Massanari; 11 grandchildren, 9 step-grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, 10 step-great-grandchildren, a sister, Esther Ulrich, and a brother, Earl (Mattie) Ulrich.

Elton E. Ulrich, 90, of Eureka

Eureka, Ill. -
Elton E. Ulrich, 90,of Eureka, formerly of Roanoke, died at 4:55 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13, 2011, at Maple Lawn Homes in Eureka where he was a resident.

Born March 13, 1921, in Shelbyville, to Andrew and Ella Unzicker Ulrich, he married Miriam B. Bachman June 12, 1945, in Morton. She died Dec. 26, 1995. He then married Fern Greiser Massanari July 4, 1997, in Fisher, Ill. She survives.

Surviving are one son, Douglas (Jenell) Ulrich of Roanoke; three daughters, Cheryl (George) Ryniak of Palos Heights; Joyce (Jim) Klokkenga of Emden; Diane (Harlan) Geiser of Roanoke; two step-daughters, Annette (Mike) Sommer of Foosland, Ill.; Liz (Mike) Ingold of East Petersburg, Pa.; two step-sons, David (Nancy) Massanari of Green Valley, Ariz.; Dennis Massanari of San Jose, Calif.; one brother, Earl (Mattie) Ulrich of Oseola, Ind.; one sister, Esther Ulrich of Eureka; 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren and 10 step great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers and one sister.

Elton worked as the plant superintendent at Ulrich Manufacturing until 1959. He then began his insurance career selling life insurance for Lincoln National Life. He formed Elton Ulrich and Associates in Roanoke which later became Financial Security Associates and is still in business today.

He was very active in both his church and the community. Elton was an original founder of Camp Menno Haven where he served on the board from 1957 to 1968. He also served on the Maple Lawn Homes Board from 1984-1996 serving as chairman from 1986-1996. He was in charge of fundraising at Maple Lawn for the Apartment Buildings and for the Gathering Place. For his service and dedication to Maple Lawn he received the Trustee Award of Merit. Elton was a founding member of Roanoke Enterprise in 1974 and served as president. He was a charter member and past president of the Roanoke Rotary Club. He also was a member and had served as president of the Roanoke Business Men's Association.

He was a member of the Roanoke Mennonite Church where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 30. The Rev. Doug Hicks will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, July 29, at Knapp-Johnson-Harris Funeral Home in Roanoke and from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday at the church. Burial will be in the Roanoke Mennonite Cemetery.

She was born October 16, 1919 at Atglen, PA to David C. and Mamie (Stoltzfus) Mast. David died in 1982 and Mamie died in April 1956.

On January 1, 1942 at Atglen, PA she was married to Harold M. Umble, who was born March 7, 1919 and survives.

Surviving are children, Loretta (Don Sharp), Kenneth (Marilyn Rheinheimer), and Joanne (Dennis Weaver), 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, two sisters, Annabelle Hoylman and Mabel Mast, and a brother, Don Mast.

Her son, Dennis Umble; daughter, Twila (Robert Charles); son, Galen Umble, grandson, Jordan Matthew Umble, sister, Beulah Bumstead, and brother, Isaac Mast preceded her in death.

Memorial services were held September 9, 2011 at Maple Grove Mennonite Church, Atglen, PA with burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Umble, Lena Mast
October 16, 1919 - September 5, 2011

Lena M. Umble, 91, formerly of Atglen, died peacefully on September 5, 2011 at Landis Homes where she resided for 4 ½ years. She is now joyously reunited in heaven with 2 sons, Dennis and Galen, daughter Twila, grandson Jordan, sister Beulah Bumstead, and brother Isaac Mast. Born in Atglen, PA on October 16, 1919, Lena was the daughter of the late David C. and Mamie Stoltzfus Mast. She was the devoted wife of Harold M. Umble with whom she celebrated 69 years of marriage.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by daughter Loretta, wife of Don Sharp, Lancaster, PA, son Ken, husband of Marilyn Rheinheimer, Atglen, PA, daughter Joanne, wife of Dennis Weaver, Mansfield, PA, son-in-law Bob Charles, Biglerville, PA, and daughter- in-law Susie Umble, Phoenix, AZ. Lena has 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 2 sisters, Annabelle Hoylman, Mabel Umble, and a brother, Don Mast.

Lena was a lifetime member of Maple Grove Mennonite Church, Atglen, PA where she was a faithful member of the women's sewing circle. She enjoyed committee work with Mennonite Women and attending conference meetings. She graduated from Eastern Mennonite School, Harrisonburg, VA in 1938. Lena was a talented quilter, quilting many quilts for her family including one for each great-grandchild, for benefit auctions, and for Mennonite Central Committee. She enjoyed gardening, especially the beautiful flower gardens around her home on the farm. She and Harold enjoyed traveling on Bob Neff Tours, especially ones taken with close friends. A favorite vacation spot was the Whippoorwill Cabin, Cedar Run, PA with the family. Lena's hobby of writing in her diary started at age 14 and she made her last entry on December 2006. Lena also enjoyed taking pictures and now her family has many photo albums of memories. She was an avid Phillies fan.

The family wants to thank the charge nurse, Lori, and former charge nurse, Betsy, and their staff at Lancaster House, Landis Homes, for the very professional and compassionate care they gave Mother these last years. It was to these loving caregivers that Mother readily gave hugs and kisses because she felt and was so loved by them. Thank you!

There will be a funeral service at the Maple Grove Mennonite Church, 549 Swan Road, Atglen, on Friday, September 9, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastors Stephen Crane, Don Sharp, and Jon Henson officiating. There will be a viewing on Thursday evening at the church from 6 to 8 p.m. and again on Friday from 10 a.m. until time of service. Interment will be in the adjoining church cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made in Lena's memory to MCC, PO Box 500, Akron, PA, 17501-0500.

Marlin was born November 17, 1943 at Joslin Hospital, to Irven and Ester Unruh both deceased. He passed away January 5, 2011 in Wichita, KS.

Marlin graduated Harper High School, Hesston College and attended Bethel College.

After serving two years of selective service in Denver, Colorado, he returned to southern Kansas. He was employed two years as a production foreman for the Coleman CO. in Wichita. This was followed by 35 years of farming and related agri-business.

Other avocations included classical music. tennis, photography and computer applications.

Marlin became a member of Pleasant Valley Mennonite Church in 1958.

Marlin was preceded in life by his parents and infant brother David.

His survivors include, sister Shirley Kraun and husband Ben of Peoria, Ill, and family Kevin, Darren and Brian; sister Judy Houtz and husband Ken of Goshen, IN and family Debra and Jennifer and twin brother Merlin Unruh and wife Vesta of Greeley, CO and family Vanessa and Kirk.

He will be missed much and will be remembered as a loving brother, uncle, and friend.

Memorial services were held 11 a.m. Saturday, February 19, 2011 in the Pleasant Valley Mennonite Church, Harper, KS with Pastor Alan Stucky officiating. Congregational hmns were "O Power Of Love," "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" and "Take Tou My Hand, O Father." Faith Penner served as accompanist.

Private family inurnment has taken place.

Memorials may be given in memory of Marlin to the Harper Hospital in care of Prairie Rose Funeral Home, Harper.

HESSTON - Willard Marion Vogt, 99, died peacefully on Saturday (Nov. 12, 2011) at Schowalter Villa in Hesston.

He was born the seventh of eight children on Oct. 8, 1912, on a farm south of Moundridge to Chris and Barbara Ruth Vogt and grew up on a farm west of Hesston. He graduated from Hesston Academy in 1931. In 1935, after offering Dorothy Verle Hershberger a stick of Juicy Fruit gum in typing class, he farmed 80 acres of wheat to pay off her $25 school loan and then married her in her family's home outside of Milford, Neb., on Oct. 12. She survives.

On the way home from their Colorado honeymoon, Willard and Verle stopped at his parent's farmhouse, and his father told them they were moving to town and Willard and Verle were to take over the farm. They lived at the farm until they moved to Hickory Street in Hesston in 1964.

Willard never missed church and was baptized at Garden Community Church then transferred his membership to Hesston Mennonite Church after the death of his mother when he was 13. He currently is a member of Kingdom Life Ministries in Hesston. He was a cattle and wheat farmer who worked with the Gideons, and was on the building committee at Hesston Mennonite Church. He housed a canning truck for the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) Meat Canning program. Willard enjoyed retirement in south Texas and Phoenix, driving an RV, and playing with his grandchildren.

Willard is survived by his wife, Dorothy Verle Hershberger of Hesston; and son, Gary Vogt and his wife, Ruth of Hesston.

He was preceded in death by mother, Barbara, who died when he was 13; father, Christian; his brothers and sisters, Milton, Paul, Clara, Nelson, Harvey, Helen and Ralph; his daughter, Janet Zook; and son, Richard.

Visitation was Monday at the Schowalter Villa Chapel in Hesston.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Kingdom Life Ministries in Hesston. Pastor Scott Miller will preside. A private family burial will take place at Eastlawn Cemetery.

The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to either MCC for meat canning or HCJB Ministries: Zook Family in support of his grandson's radio mission in Ecuador, in care of Miller-Ott Funeral Home, 107 S. Lancaster, P.O. Box 32, Hesston, KS 67062.
