Life Story for Thelma E. Goetz Mishler Birth July 24, 1924 Death May 17, 2012

Thelma Elizabeth Goetz was born July 24, 1924 in St. Joseph County to William and Elsie (Tyson) Goetz. She was the first girl following her older brother Virgil. As young child, she lived in the Wakarusa area one mile west and one mile north on the township line and attended Olive Mennonite Church. In 1930, the family moved to the Waterford School area and they started attending Yellow Creek Mennonite Church. When Thelma was ten and a half years old, she was blessed by the birth of her baby sister Phyllis.

On April 12, 1936, at age twelve, Thelma was baptized and became a member of Yellow Creek Mennonite Church. She took her faith very seriously. Thelma attended Waterford School through grade eight. In high school, she took College Preparatory courses at the encouragement of her mother and graduated from Goshen High School in 1946.

One of Thelma's early memories is being introduced to nursing in her home by her mother. When her father got the mumps, her mother made a white band to put around her head and tied a white apron around her. Then she gave Thelma food on a tray and let her carry this upstairs to take care of her father as Dad's "little nurse".

At age 22, a friend invited her to go to Goshen Hospital with her to work as a nurse's aide. In that role, she realized how much she had to learn to be a good nurse. She desired to be a nurse but she also wanted to KNOW it was God's will. She prayed earnestly for an answer.

Then January 12, 1948, while washing a patients' face who was in a coma, the patient opened her eyes and asked "Did Christ come to save all people?" Thelma answered, "All who wanted Him. Do you want him?" She got no answer, but she saw that question as a sign that God could use nursing as a mission field. Another time, a nurse commended her for the careful and prayerful care she gave a premature baby that was not expected to live. Those two incidents convinced her that God was calling her to nursing.

It was important to Thelma to attend a Christian school so she explored nursing programs at Goshen College and La Junta Mennonite School of Nursing. She calculated the cost of tuition and living expenses and worked several years as a nurse's aide at Goshen Hospital until she had enough money to go to school. She began with a year of pre-nursing classes at Goshen College and then moved to La Junta, Colorado as to begin nurse's training at La Junta Mennonite School of Nursing. School was challenging for her but she persisted in doing her best. A long way from home, she connected with family by letter writing.

Thelma graduated in 1952 in a class of sixteen nurses and then began studying for State Boards. After passing State Boards she made a phone call home with her parents that everyone in her class had passed the test! She stayed on in Colorado for another year to work as a relief nurse. There she gained valuable experience in working with mentally ill patients and those who were dying. Upon returning to Goshen in 1953, she was hired by Goshen Hospital as a nurse and worked there until her retirement.

In January 1958, after singing in the Yellow Creek Chorus at Clinton Brick Mennonite church, a young man asked to take her home. This was the beginning of a romance with Walter Mishler. They were married June 20, 1959 at Yellow Creek Mennonite Church by Pastor Peter Wiebe.

Walter and Thelma were blessed with two adopted children Wesley and Tammy. Together Walter and Thelma enjoyed rearing their children to love and follow Jesus Christ as they attended Yellow Creek Mennonite Church. Living on a dairy farm, they also enjoyed following them in school and 4-H activities. Later it was a delight to them when Tammy was married and gave them their only grandchild, Elizabeth or "Libby".

At Yellow Creek Mennonite Church, Thelma was an active member of the Yokefellows and Fellow Pilgrims Sunday school class and participated in Women's sewing, Wednesday evening classes and taught young children. In addition to nursing, Thelma enjoyed singing and listening to choral music, playing the organ, gardening, quilting and writing. She was grateful to be able to attend her 50th nursing class reunion at La Junta Colorado in 2002.

One of Thelma's deepest losses was that Wesley and Tammy both preceded her and Walter in death. Wesley was injured and died following a three wheeler accident when he was twenty two and Tammy died a natural death at age thirty-three.
After Wesley's death, Thelma and Walter moved off the farm into New Paris.

They gardened there, had a few chickens and enjoyed being part of a small community. In 2003 when they moved to Manor IV at Greencroft. They enjoyed activities there for several years before a fall, a stroke and onset of dementia. In 2009, they moved again to Evergreen Assisted living at Greencroft, and then Gables in Healthcare in 2010 where they lived until Walter's sudden passing in February 2011. Thelma remained at the Gables and brought joy to patients and staff despite her grief. After a recent hospitalization, she returned to Gables and God called her home on May 17, 2012.

Thelma was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Virgil Goetz, her children Wesley Mishler on May 23, 1984 and Tammy Robinson November 23, 1997, and her husband Walter on February 2, 2011.

She is survived by one sister Phyllis Kehr of Goshen, granddaughter Elizabeth Apel of Wyoming, sister-in-law Bertha Goetz and numerous nieces and nephews.

Despite many losses in her life, Thelma had the ability to see God's hand and grace in each event and continue to praise the Lord. Praise be to God for his faithfulness to Thelma and her desire to serve him all of her days.

Written by Katie Cunningham, Pastor of Visitation and Senior Care from visitation notes from 2000 - 2012 and from Thelma's writings. Presented at her funeral service at Yellow Creek Mennonite Church on May 23, 2012.
