He was born August 21, 1939 at Annville, PA to Daniel David and Esther Mattie (Umberger) Wert. Daniel was born March 13, 1904 and died February 6, 1969. Esther was born October 7, 1902 and died August 2, 1994.
On August 25, 1961 at Belleville, Mifflin Co., PA he was married to Esther Thelma Glick, who was born September 26, 1941 and survives.
Surviving are children, Don Carufel-Wert, Terri Carufel-Wert (spouse); and Dave Hockman-Wert, Cathleen Hockman-Wert (spouse); two grandchildren and siblings, Nancy Wert Augsburger; Dan (Mim) Wert; Lois (Tom) Chamness; and Jim (Kathy) Wert.
Bob grew up in Lebanon and Lancaster counties in Pennsylvania. He graduated from high school at Lancaster (Pa.) Mennonite School (LMS) in 1957. Following high school, Bob attended Eastern Mennonite College Harrisonburg, Va.), where he met Esther Glick from Belleville, Pa. On August 25, 1961, they were married. Bob graduated in 1963 with Bachelor's degrees in Bible and History. After two years teaching P.E. and History at LMS, Bob and Esther had their first child, Donald Alan in 1965. The turmoil of the 1960s drew Bob to service in the city, and in 1966 they moved to inner-city Washington, D.C., to do voluntary service with Eastern Mennonite Board of Missions. While in D.C., Bob realized his life-long purpose-helping people improve their lives. So he took a Master's degree in Social Work at Howard University, graduating in 1970. In 1969, Bob's second son, David Patrick, was born.
In the 1970s, Bob taught Social Work at Bethel College in North Newton, Kan., lived in an intentional community in W.Va., and counseled inmates at a Maryland state prison. In 1978, Bob moved to Goshen, Ind., where he first worked as an addictions counselor, and later as a counselor of children and youth, for Oaklawn Psychiatric Center in Elkhart and Goshen. After 26 years, Bob stopped working at Oaklawn, but didn't stop working on behalf of people in need. He worked with the Outreach Commission and Jubilee Fund program at College Mennonite Church (CMC), where he was a member, did short-term service in Puerto Rico, and enjoyed serving meals at CMC.
He frequently could be found at Goshen College music and sporting events or the Rec-Fitness Center. Saturday mornings he often went to Rachel's Bread and the Goshen Farmer's Market. He loved spending time with his granddaughters. We'd like to think Bob would be honored if he knew he died on the same day as the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a man he admired a great deal and whom Bob heard speak in Lancaster and Washington, D.C.
