Ada W. Sadler, 87, of Myerstown, passed away on Sunday, April 3, 2022 in her home. She was the wife of Thomas I. Sadler and were married on August 3, 1957. She was born on July 27, 1934 in Lancaster County, daughter of the late Henry M. and Susan H. Weiler Zimmerman.
Ada was a member of the Bethel Mennonite Church of Weaverland Conference.
Surviving in addition to her husband are children, Leon Sadler and wife Arlene of Bethel; Mervin Sadler and wife Darla and Earl Sadler and wife Aletha both of OH; Elvin Sadler and wife Jessica of Denver; Ellen Sadler and Esther Sadler both of Myerstown; Joan Martin and husband Lloyd of Loysville; 32 grandchildren; 11 step grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; brother, Amos Zimmerman of Ephrata.
She was preceded in death by infant son, David Sadler; daughter, Verna Sadler; siblings, Martha Nolt, John Zimmerman, Eva Zimmerman, Aaron Zimmerman, Nettie Martin, Eli Zimmerman and Ray Zimmerman.
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 12, 2022 at 9:30 am in Martin’s Mennonite Church, N. Church Road, Womelsdorf, PA. Burial in the adjoining church cemetery. Sadler, Thomas Irvin
January 12, 1934 – October 18, 2022
Thomas Irvin Sadler, 88, of Myerstown, passed away on Tuesday, October 18, 2022 in his home. He was the husband of the late Ada W. Zimmerman Sadler and they were married on August 3, 1957. He was born in Jackson Township, Lebanon County on January 12, 1934, a son of the late Clyde Webster and Mary Evelyn Lehman Sadler. Thomas was a member of the Bethel Mennonite Church of the Weaverland Conference and a retired farmer.
He is survived by children: Ellen Sadler and Esther Sadler both of Myerstown; Joan wife of Lloyd Martin of Loysville, PA; Leon husband of Arlene Sadler of Bethel, PA; Mervin husband of Darla Sadler of Wooster, OH; Earl husband of Aletha Sadler of Kansas, OH; Elvin husband of Jessica Sadler of Denver, PA; 32 grandchildren; 11 step grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; sisters, Marian, Martha, Reeda and Marie Sadler all of Myerstown, PA; Ruth wife of Norman Martin of Myerstown, PA; brothers, Marlin husband of Grace Sadler of Osage, IA; Mark husband of Grace Sadler of Richland, PA.

Sark, Betty Lou Arnold
August 31, 1940 - April 10, 2022
Betty Lou Sark, 81, of Goshen, died at 1:30 am on Sunday, April 10, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Sarasota, FL from injuries that she had sustained from a fall approximately a week earlier. She was born on August 31, 1940, in Middlebury to John and Rachel (Hooley) Arnold. On August 20, 1960, in White Cloud, MI she married Dana "Dwight" Sark, he survives.
Survivors in addition to her husband are two daughters, Connie (Sylvan) Eash of Goshen and Cindy (Danny) Matson of Newton, IL; two grandchildren, Micah Miller and Trinity (Ian) Brinckman, who are expecting the delivery of Betty’s first great grandchild; adopted children, Carlos and Celina Romero of Goshen; adopted grandchildren, Elise and Cristian Romero; a sister, Nancy Hitts of Romulus, MI; a brother, Terry (Nancy) Arnold of White Cloud, MI.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Wanda Jones; and a brother, Richard Arnold.
Betty had worked for 34 years at Abitibi in Middlebury as a print group leader and supervisor. She and her husband had wintered in Sarasota, FL for many years and were members of Clinton Frame Church. She was an avid reader and enjoyed working in her flower gardens. After retirement her ministry was sending sympathy and birthday cards of encouragement.
Visitation will be from 2:00 - 5:00 pm and 6:00 - 8:00 pm on Saturday April 23, at Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, 1003 S. Main St., Middlebury. There will also be one hour of visitation prior to the 3:00 pm funeral service on Sunday, April 24, at Clinton Frame Church, Goshen. Services will be conducted by Pastor Sebastiano Rosa. Burial will be in Clinton Frame Cemetery, Goshen. Memorials may be given to Clinton Frame Church or Time to Revive. Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, Middlebury, is in charge of the arrangements.
Sauder, Amos M.
March 22, 1941 - May 18, 2022
Amos M. Sauder, 81, of 301 E. Farmersville Road, Ephrata, passed away on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, at Lancaster General Hospital- Penn Medicine.
Born in East Earl Township, he was the son of the late Martin and Elizabeth (Martin) Sauder. He was the husband of Katie W. (Zimmerman) Sauder.
He was a member of Conestoga Mennonite Church, Groffdale Conference.
Amos was a farmer and owner of Sauders Shoe Service.
In addition to his wife, Amos is survived by five sons, Amos, married to Annetta (Hurst) Sauder of New Holland, Kenneth, married to Lena Mae (Zimmerman) Sauder of East Earl, Jason, married to Vera Mae (Sauder) Sauder of Charles City, IA, Lamar, married to Rebecca (Fox) Sauder of Dorchester, WI, Titus, married to Esther (Nolt) Sauder of Ephrata; four daughters, Grace, married to Aaron Shirk of Shippensburg, Lucy, married to Eli Shirk of Ephrata, Eunice, married to Edwin Martin of Ionia, IA, Martha, married to Paul Zimmerman of New Holland; 94 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Adam, married to Lena (Reiff) Sauder of Penn Yan, NY, Mahlon Sauder of East Earl, Eli Sauder of East Earl and a sister-in-law, Alta Sauder of Leola.
He was preceded in death by one grandchild, three brothers, and five sisters.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, May 22, 2022, from 1 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM at the late residence. Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 23, 2022, at 9:30 AM at Conestoga Mennonite Church, 313 N. Farmersville Road, Ephrata, with Bishop Ammon Weaver officiating. Interment will take place in the adjoining church cemetery.

Sauder, Anna Mary Sensenig
July 17 1934 - April 13, 2022
Anna Mary (Sensenig) Sauder, 87, of Lititz, passed away on April 13, 2022 as a resident of Landis Homes. Born in Ephrata, she was the daughter of the late Aaron L. and Emma M. (Martin) Sensenig. She was the loving wife of the late Christian W. Sauder, who she married on February 12, 1955 and shared sixty-two loving years of marriage until the time of his passing on December 23, 2017.
Anna Mary was a member of Martindale Mennonite Church. She worked for S. Clyde Weaver at Green Dragon Market for many years. She volunteered for many years at the Ephrata ReUzit Shop, was a seamstress, enjoyed taking bus trips and vacations to Spruce Lake Retreat in the Poconos with her family.
She is survived by her children; Cindy, wife of Sid Good, of Ephrata and Galen, husband of Twila (Hess) Sauder, of Lancaster; six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and a daughter-in-law, Jeanette (Burkholder) Sauder of Stevens, PA. In addition to her parents and her husband, she is predeceased by her son; Calvin Sauder, who passed away on December 19, 2017 and her siblings; Earl, husband of Dorothy Sensenig and Esther, wife of Wilmer Martin.
The family would like to give a special thank you to the staff at Landis Homes for their wonderful, loving care of our mother for so many years.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at 10:00 AM at Martindale Mennonite Church, 171 Hurst Road, Ephrata, PA 17522. Viewings will be held on Monday, April 18, 2022 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the church and on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 from 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM. Interment will take place in the adjoining church cemetery following the service.

Barbara H. Sauder, 68 years, 10 months and 29 days, of Mount Pleasant Mills, entered into rest Tuesday, July 26, 2022, at her residence surrounded by family.
She was born Aug. 27, 1953, in Stony Brook, York County, a daughter of the late Paul Zimmerman and Magdalena O. (Horning) Hoover. On Nov. 22, 1973, she married Lloyd W. Sauder, who survives.
To this union were born 11 children, David (Rose Elaine Weaver) of Richfield, Paul (Eunice Hoover) of Middleburg, Rachel (Nelson Zimmerman) of Myerstown, Barbara (Eugene Hoover) of Richland, Lloyd Jr. (Roxanne Martin) of Middleburg, Rosanna (Allen Weaver) of Hamburg, Lester (Sharon Hoover) of Mount Pleasant Mills, Ruth (Uron Zimmerman) of Sunbury, Grace (Leon Ray Oberholtzer) of Lebanon, Lena Beth (Marus Hoover) of Fannettsburg; and 57 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Philip Sauder who passed away July 28, 1978.
Family and friends are invited to the viewing from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 31, at the late home, 2840 Buckwheat Valley Road, Mount Pleasant Mills. Sauder, David
December 21, 1941 - January 20, 2022
Gentle, kind, thoughtful, and considerate until the end, David Sauder’s earthly sojourn concluded on January 20, 2022, at Lancaster General Hospital-Penn Medicine, from complications of COVID-19. As he joyfully adds his voice to the heavenly song, we who remain grieve deeply but are comforted by our shared hope in the gospel of Christ and our shared commitment to continuing the service and compassion that characterized his life.
David was born on December 21, 1941 to Amos and Barbara Sauder. As the son of a minister, his devotion to the church and its work began at a young age, eventually transforming into a call to serve the broader community by becoming a teacher and principal at Ephrata Mennonite School for 41 years. While both church and school offered him the opportunity to exercise his gifts in teaching, they also afforded countless ways for him to share his love for music. David sang in more choirs than most people realize exist, most recently the Heritage Chorale of Lancaster. He conducted the Ephrata Area Mennonite Chorus for 20 years, introduced hundreds of students to a strong choral tradition, and trained many churches and individuals to become proficient in congregational hymn singing. Music was the medium through which he united people from all walks of life, giving glory to God for music’s ability to transcend difficult or mundane circumstances. In retirement, David was able to more fully indulge his love of history and genealogy, working for nine years at the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society, organizing the annual Bookworm Frolic and other rare book auctions.
While studying at Millersville State College, David met his perfect life partner, Joanne Marie Longenecker. Together they shared 53 years of marriage, supporting and encouraging each other through everything on their path. Their family expanded to include Christopher, Sharon (and her husband John Muhlfeld), and Matthew (and his wife Jennifer Bowman Sauder) as well as five grandchildren: Maya, Ty, and Luke Sauder and Amy and Jasmine Muhlfeld. As a father and grandfather, David spent hours reading stacks of books, encouraging musical pursuits, and perhaps most importantly, valuing each child’s unique gifts, interests, and personality. He was also blessed and strengthened by close relationships with his surviving siblings: Daniel Sauder (Lois), Marvin Sauder (Betty), Marian Sauder Egli (Orville, deceased), Anna Mary Sauder, and Evelyn Sauder. In heaven he will rejoice to be reunited with his sister Grace Sauder Good and his loving parents.
Memorial gatherings to recognize the Lord’s work in David’s life will be held at Metzler Mennonite Church, 515 West Metzler Road, Ephrata, PA 17522. There will be a viewing on Friday, January 28 from 6:00-9:00 pm. Saturday, January 29 will begin with a viewing hour from 12:45-1:45 followed by the funeral service promptly at 2:00 pm. Interment will take place in the Metzler Church Cemetery. Due to the widespread presence of Covid, the family requests that masks be worn at all services.

Sauder, Eugene H.
August 19, 1929 - November 23, 2022
Eugene H. Sauder, 93, of Fairmount Homes, Ephrata, PA passed away at the home on Wednesday, November 23, 2022.
Born in Terre Hill, on August 19, 1929, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Eva B. Horning Sauder. He was married 68 years to the late Grace M. Shirk Sauder who died in 2018.
As a life-long member of Lichty's Mennonite Church, East Earl, he had served in the ministry of deacon, trustee, teacher, mentor, superintendent, custodian, or whatever God called him to in various periods of his life.
His humble leadership and sacrifice were appreciated at his many places of occupation and even in his retirement at Fairmount. He lived by Christian example at home, work, church, and wherever he was. His life will have an eternal impact on many people.
The family would like to thank the staff at Fairmount for the wonderful care they provided to Eugene over the last years of his life.
Surviving are four children, Donna wife of James Mast, Jay husband of Cindy Sauder, Glenn husband of Brenda Sauder, and Robert husband of Joyce Sauder; a son-in-law, Nelson husband of Luella Martin; eight siblings, Minerva Bowman, Harry husband of Anna Sauder, Lois wife of Michael Zehr, Charles husband of Mary Sauder, Nancy Esbenshade, Eunice wife of Marvin Eastman, Leon husband of Kari Sauder, Elvin husband of Marilyn Sauder; a brother-in-law, Paul Risser; and 17 grandchildren, 54 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Joan wife of Nelson Martin, a grandson Caleb Mast, a brother Edwin and a sister Elaine.
A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, November 29, at 10:00 A.M. at Lichty's Mennonite Church, 1690 Union Grove Road, East Earl, PA with Bishop Clair Long officiating. Lydia M. Sauder, 85, of 195 School Rd., Leola, entered into rest at home on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2022. She was the wife of the late Aaron Z. Sauder who died in 2012. Born in W. Earl Twp., she was a daughter of the late Aaron W. and Esther W. Martin Horning.
A homemaker, Mrs. Sauder was a member of the Groffdale Mennonite Church (Groffdale Conference), Leola.
Surviving are: three children, Linus married to Mary Martin Sauder, Plymouth, OH, Norman married to Susie Newswanger Sauder, Leola, Eva Jane married to Emory Martin, Lititz; 24 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Ruth Ann Shirk Sauder (the late David Aaron Sauder), Leola; siblings, Elam M. married to Mabel S. Snyder Horning, Lena M. married to the late Menno Z. Nolt, both of Leola; brother-in-law, Mahlon M. Sauder, E. Earl. She was preceded in death by: a son, David Aaron Sauder; a granddaughter, Elois Ann Martin; sister, Emma M. Sauder.

Nelson R. Sauder, 73, of Akron, PA passed away September 6, 2022 at his home. He was the son of the late Daniel and Edna (Hershey) Sauder. He was the beloved husband of Barbara (Good) Sauder.
Nelson graduated in 1966 from Lancaster Mennonite School. He was employed by HC Quality Doors in Gordonville, PA. He was a faithful member of Metzler Mennonite Church.
Besides his wife he is survived by 6 children: Karen Sauder (Randy), Lee Sauder (Lisa), Loren Sauder (Rachel), Julie Nolt (Brad), Kate Sauder, and Ben Sauder (Elaine Wagler, fiance) and 19 grandchildren. Also surviving are 7 siblings: Sarah Horning, Lois Sauder, Naomi (Sam) Burkholder, Clyde (Arlene) Sauder Esther Mae (Raymond) Sensenig, Clair (Nancy) Sauder, John (Janet) Sauder and a sister-in-law, Alice Sauder. He was predeceased by a brother, D. Clinton Sauder.

Adah J. Schlabach 49, of 3891 CR 70, Sugarcreek, passed away at the Akron General Hospital on Tuesday, March 1, 2022 after a lengthy battle with cancer.
She was born on April 30, 1972 to Jacob A. and Clara (Raber) Yoder. On May 23, 1991 she married David J. Schlabach who survives. Adah was a homemaker and a member of the Old Order Amish Church.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she is survived by her 8 children, Malena, Esther Marie, James, Brian, Clara, Marlin, Rosetta, and Anne Elizabeth all of the home; siblings, Katie (Ivan) Troyer of Fresno, Miriam (Robert M. C.) Yoder of Sugarcreek, Abe (Laura) Yoder of Charm, Jacob Jr. Yoder of Sugarcreek and Edward Yoder of Sugarcreek; and parents-in-law, John D. and Esther Schlabach of Becks Mills.
Funeral services will be held at the home on Friday, March 4, at 9:00 a.m. with Bishop Ivan Raber officiating. Burial will follow in the Miller Cemetery. Friends may call at the home after 2 p.m. on Wednesday and any time on Thursday.

Schlabach, Dan J. J.
December 15, 1933 - April 5 2022
Dan J.J. Schlabach, 88, of 9231 Township Road 609, Fredericksburg, died Tuesday, April 5, 2022 at his home from an injury due to a fall.
He was born on Dec. 15, 1933 at Millersburg to the late Jacob and Ada (Wengerd) Schlabach and married Mattie J. Yoder on Dec. 19, 1963. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Old Order Amish. He was ordained minister in 1972 and later Bishop in 1991.
He leaves to mourn his wife, Mattie of 58 years, 9 children, Anna (Mahlon) Miller of Millersburg, Ada (Ervin ) Miller of Apple Creek, Lizzie Ann (Perry) Yoder of the home, Esther (Mose) Weaver of Fredericksburg, Monroe (Mary Ann) Schlabach of Fredericksburg, William (Elsie) Schlabach of Fredericksburg, Clara (Raymond) Schlabach of Apple Creek, Edna (Atlee) Mast of Fredericksburg and Eli (Iva) Schlabach of Millersburg; 75 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, a brother, Joe (the late Irene) Schlabach of Apple Creek and a sister, Edna (Monroe) Chupp of Fredericksburg. He was preceded in death by a son, Joe, a daughter, Erma, a grandson and two sisters, Betty Troyer and infant Mary.

Daniel Schlabach, 82, of Atwood, Illinois passed away at 7:30 A.M. on Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at his residence.
Funeral services will be held at 9:30 A.M. on Sunday, February 6, 2022 at the Otto Center, 1 miles south of Arthur, Illinois. Pastor Larry Rocke will officiate. Burial will be in the Sunnyside Mennonite Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Friday, February 4, 2022 and from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. and 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Saturday, February 5, 2022 at the Otto Center. Daniel was born on August 7, 1939 in Arthur, Illinois. He was a son of Fred D. and Mary A. (Yoder) Schlabach. He married Verna Miller on January 20, 1966 in Arthur, Illinois.
He is survived by his wife Verna; six children, LaMar, Ronnie and his wife Lorene, Lori, Gary, Larry and Terry Schlabach all of Atwood, IL; two granddaughters, Gayle and Jamie Schlabach, three grandsons, Waylon, Wyatt and Callahan Schlabach; five siblings, Sadie Plank and her husband Harvey, Eli Schlabach and his wife Rebecca, Harley Schlabach and his wife Mary Etta, Annie Ellen Otto and her husband Melvin and Fannie Marie Schlabach all of Arthur, IL
He was preceded in death by his parents, four siblings, Lena (Ben) Schrock, Lewis (Mattie) Schlabach, Abbie (Jake) Beachy and Willard (Esther Fern who passed away one day after Daniel) Schlabach.
Daniel was a member of the Sunnyside Mennonite Church in Arcola, Illinois. Daniel was a hog farmer most of his life. He had also worked in a cabinet shop and at CHI.
He enjoyed being with his family and listening to music, especially the music his children made.

Esther Fern J. Lee, 83 of Ava, Illinois formerly of Arthur, Illinois passed away at 6:30 A.M. on Thursday, February 3, 2022, at her son’s residence in rural Tuscola, Illinois.
Funeral services will be held at 9:30 A.M. on Tuesday, February 8, 2022, at the Shawnee Amish Church-East, Campbell Hill, Illinois. Burial will be in the Shawnee Amish Church Cemetery-East, Campbell Hill, Illinois. Paul L. Schlabach, 75, of 3841 Graber Rd., Fredericksburg, died Tuesday, April 5, 2022 after suffering a massive heart attack.
He was born in Hadley, PA on July 19, 1946 to Lester V. and Sylvia (Yoder) Schlabach. He married Amanda E. Shetler on March 28, 1968 and she survives. He was a member of the Amish Church.
Surviving are his wife, Amanda; seven children, Lester and Edna Mae Schlabach of Fredericksburg, William and Nioma Schlabach of Holmesville, Eli and Esther Schlabach of Fredericksburg, Linda and Dan Shetler of Holmesville Sylvia Schlabach, Marie Schlabach and Miriam Schlabach all of Wooster; 37 grandchildren and brothers and sisters, Mary and Simon Lee of Centerville, PA, Rebecca and Enos Miller, Emma Hostetler, Ella and Atlee Hershberger, Jonas and Fannie Schlabach, Fannie and William Hostetler and Nancy and Ervin Hilty all of Apple Creek, Andy and Laura Schlabach of New Concord and Lydia and Melvin Yoder of Sandy Lake, PA.
He was preceded in death by his Father and Mother, a son, Andy, 2 brothers, Nelson and Johnny, an infant sister, Betty, brother-in-law, Jacob Hershberger and step-brother-in-law, Levi Hostetler.

Schmucker, Mary J. Miller
June 4, 1936 - March 8, 2022
Mary began her life-long residency in Elkhart County on June 4, 1936. She was the daughter of John and Susie (Hershberger) Miller. Her siblings included Melvin (Iva) Miller of Goshen, Alvin (Marcella) Miller of Elkhart and Polly Miller of Goshen; and a brother-in-law, Alvin (Missy) Hochstetler. She was preceded in death by a sister Darlene Hochstetler.
On April 10, 1999, Mary Miller married Abraham Schmucker. He died May 2, 2004. Through his marriage she became the stepmother of two boys and three girls, all currently living in the great Goshen area. Mary also valued the relationship with her nieces and nephews along with their children. She appreciated her extended family’s visits and phone calls.
Mary’s career included hard work on her parents’ farm. A family illness called on her to provide some extra roles as a mother figure. She was employed for numerous years at Keens of Middlebury. Later, she was employed by Goshen Hospital as a nurse’s aide. That led her into the home health care field for various people in the Goshen community. In retirement, she utilized her sewing skills to construct quilts, face masks and garments. She crocheted hundreds of baby caps, donating them to the hospital maternity ward.
Mary was a member of Roselawn Conservative Mennonite Church, Middlebury. When mobile, she attended various church sewing groups. She also had great interest in piecing jigsaw puzzles, playing Rook and other games with friends at Greencroft of Goshen where she resided.
On March 8, [2022] Mary succumbed to death at Goshen Hospital. Viewing will be Sunday, March 13, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Fair Haven Amish Mennonite Church, SR 4, Goshen, and on Monday from 9 until the 10 a.m. funeral service. Pastor Thad Lechlitner of Roselawn Conservative Mennonite Church will officiate.
Burial will follow in Thomas Cemetery, Goshen.
Memorial donations may be given to Goshen Hospice and Home Care.

Jamesport, Missouri: Christy D. Schrock was born on October 14, 1926, at Yoder, Kansas to David E. and Mattie (Stutzman) Schrock. He passed away at his home in Jamesport, Missouri on June 12, 2022, at the age 95 years, 7 months, and 29 days.
He was married on September 5, 1946, to Edna J. Helmuth in Reno County, Kansas. They lived in matrimony 62 years and 1 month. He remarried to Susie J. (Helmuth) (Miller) on March 7, 2010.They lived in matrimony 5 years and 1 month.
Christy joined the Amish church in his youth and remained faithful to his death. He leaves to mourn three sons, two daughters, and one daughter-in-law.
Ruby Kathryn married to Lavern Coblentz, Albion, MI, Elvan Ray married to Rosie Graber, Jamesport, MO, Lloyd married to Leona Yoder, Crab Orchard, KY, Susie Ellen married to Sam Mast, Crab Orchard, KY, Ivan married to Verna Yutzy of the home; daughter-in-law, Christina (Bontrager) Schrock, Crab Orchard, KY; four stepdaughters, Joan, Linda, Nancy, Karen; he also leaves 53 grandchildren; 219 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his son, Raymond; his father and mother; two brothers, Edwin and Eli and four great grandchildren.

John Lyle Schrock of Halsey, Oregon, was born July 13, 1954, and died May 16, 2022, at the age of 67. He was Born in Albany, Oregon, to Melvin Schrock and Anna (Roth) Schrock. John was the youngest of eight siblings (Paul), Esta, Eunice, Melva Anne, Rhoda, Jason, (Julia).
In 1979, John met Elizabeth Barker in Harrisburg, Oregon, at a Mennonite church gathering. The two were married on July 12, 1980. By the end of April 1981 their daughter Alicia Heiden had arrived. Then in March of 1984 their son Matthan Schrock was born inside their home. John's grandchildren are Austin, Trenten, Angel and Azrael and Great Grandson Asher Heiden.
After moving to Pennsylvania in 1986 and spending years on the road as a professional truck driver, John found a more permanent home driving for Smith Seed in 1996 back where it all started, Halsey, Oregon. There he shared his love for gardening by making brilliant displays in his yard, which were featured in the local newspaper.
John was best known for his wit, big heart, and remarkable character. As quick to help you as he was to offer a joke, his steadfast and friendly demeanor touched nearly every person he met in a meaningful way. He is remembered as a storyteller, father, man of principle and integrity, and as having a personal relationship with God our Father and Jesus Christ our savior. John was an active and beloved member of his church and community, regularly reaching out to those in need, and on multiple occasions even offering his home to people with nowhere else to go.

Kadin M. Schrock, 16, of Syracuse, died Sunday, May 15, 2022 due to a swimming accident.
He was born October 10, 2005, in Goshen to Darin and Jennifer (Stepek) Schrock.
They survive along with six siblings, Myra, Lia, “Gator”, “CC”, “PJ”, and Jax, all at home; grandparents, Ernie and Gail Schrock of Milford, and Mike and Betty Stepek of Boonville; and uncles and aunts, Mike and Kristin of Ligonier, and Jessica and Brad of Terre Haute.
A sophomore student at Fairfield High School, Kadin was active in baseball and football.
He enjoyed being with friends and loved being outdoors, hunting and fishing.
Kadin was a beloved, son, brother, grandson, nephew, and faithful friend who will be sorely missed and forever in our hearts.
Visitation will be Sunday, May 22, 2022 from 2 to 7 p.m. at Maple City Chapel, Goshen, and from 9 to 9:30 a.m. prior to the 10 a.m. funeral on Monday, May 23, also at Maple City Chapel. Pastor Joe Miller will officiate.

KJ Schrock, age 55, of North Lewisburg, Ohio went to be with his Lord and Savior Sunday, January 9, 2022.
He was born Kenton Joel Smucker in Bellefontaine, Ohio June 18,1966, a son of Ralph Morris Smucker of Austin, Texas, and Janet Irene (Schrock) Smucker of West Liberty, Ohio.
KJ is survived by his sister-in-law, Julie Smucker; a niece, Emily Smucker; a nephew, Austin Smucker and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his brother, Rev. Jerry D. Smucker M.D.
KJ was a 1984 graduate of West Liberty-Salem High School. He went on to attend Ohio University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. KJ worked as a self-employed voice actor and was a licensed minister with The Apostolic Church Fellowship. A sports enthusiast, he was an avid fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes and Dallas Cowboys. KJ enjoyed hunting and fishing, driving on back country roads with his windows down, but most of all spending time with his family and friends.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, January 15, 2022, at the Bethel Mennonite Church in West Liberty, where Pastors Rebecca Kauffman and Alvin Yoder will officiate the funeral service beginning at 1:00 p.m. The family requests guests in attendance be symptom-free and wear a mask.
Burial will be at the Fairview Cemetery in West Liberty at the convenience of the family.

Levi was a grain and dairy farmer for many years. He also worked at several local businesses over the years. In retirement he could often be found spending time with friends at local coffee shops and enjoyed wintering in Pinecraft, FL. Watching his grandchildren grow up was one of his greatest joys.
Levi was a member of the Old Order Amish Church.

She was born on April 11, 1947 in Goshen, to Ora and Barbara (Mast) Bontrager. On November 6, 1969, in Middlebury, she married Mervin A. Schrock, he survives.
Survivors in addition to her husband are two sons, Daniel (Carrie) Schrock of Middlebury, Wilbur (Dena) Schrock of LaGrange; three daughters, Edna Mae (Vernon) Schrock, Esther (Joseph) Miller, and Ada Irene (David) Miller all of LaGrange; 37 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four sisters, Ada Irene (John R.) Miller of Centreville, MI, Polly Ann Miller of Goshen, Esther (Wilbur) Bontrager of Shipshewana, Edna Fern (Harley) Schrock of LaGrange.

Mary was a homemaker and member of the Old Order Amish Church.

Orvan A. Schrock, 40, of Wolcottville, died at 2:54 pm on Wednesday, February 23, at the scene of a tree cutting accident in Middlebury. He was born on December 11, 1981 in LaGrange County to Alvin and Katie (Miller) Schrock. On April 16, 2003 in LaGrange County, he married Martha Beechy, she survives.

Gertie Mae Schwartz, 92, of Goshen, died at 7:30 pm, on Saturday, March 5 at her residence. She was born on November 1, 1929, in Shipshewana, to David J. and Mary Ann (Weirich) Kaufman. On December 16, 1954, in Shipshewana, she married Amos L. Schwartz, he died February 25, 2020.
Surviving are two sons, Daniel (Yvonne) Schwartz of Wolcottville, David (Mary Lou) Schwartz of Goshen; six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; great-grandson, Lyndon Jay Schwartz; four brothers, Amos, Daniel, Eli, and Joe Kaufman; three sisters, Sovilla Helmuth, Alpha Whetstone, and Elizabeth Kaufman.
Gertie was a homemaker and a member of the Old Order Amish Church.

Joshua Aaron Schwartz, 18, of Shipshewana, died at 2:55 pm on Monday, July 11, [2022] at the scene of a motorcycle accident near Topeka. He was born on February 29, 2004, in Topeka, to Emery and Wanda (Miller) Schwartz.
Survivors in addition to his parents are sister, Bethany Schwartz and brother, Jayden Schwartz both at home; grandmother, Katie Schwartz of Shipshewana; many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Olen and Barbara Miller and Dan Schwartz; uncle, Orlen Miller.
Joshua was a member of Fairhaven Mennonite Church and worked at Grand Design. He was a devoted Christian who loved the Lord. He greatly enjoyed spending time with his family, cousins, and many friends. Josh was very excited about getting involved as a volunteer with the Shipshewana Fire Department.
Visitation will be from 5:00 - 8:00 pm on Wednesday, July 13 and 2:00 - 4:00 pm and 6:00 - 8:00 pm on Thursday, July 14 at Fairhaven Mennonite Church, 13513 State Road 4, Goshen. Margaret Schwartz, 89, of LaGrange (district:17-2), died at 4:05 am, on Friday, October 7, [2022] at her residence. She was born on June 18, 1933, in New Haven, to Daniel and LaVina (Lengacher) Miller. On September 20, 1956, in Allen County she married Albert Schwartz, he died March 5, 2021.
Surviving are four daughters, Naomi (Freeman) Miller of LaGrange, Lois (Richard) Miller of Goshen, Edith (Willie) Bender of Shipshewana, Josephine (Daryl) Lambright of Middlebury; four sons, Enos Schwartz of Centreville, MI, John (Miriam) Schwartz of LaGrange, Samuel (Miriam) Schwartz of Centreville, MI, Levi Schwartz of Wolcottville; son-in-law, Floyd (Arlene) Mast of LaGrange; 29 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Rosa Christner of Vevay, IN, Fannie (Amos) Christner of Delhi, IA; three brothers, Samuel Miller of Hicksville, OH, James (Mary Jo) Miller of Hicksville, OH, Daniel (Emma) Miller of Quincy, MI; sister-in-law, Shirley Miller of New Haven.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two daughters, Christina Schwartz and Mariann Mast; two sisters, Leah Wickey and Mariann Schwartz; two brothers, Ora and Jerome Miller.
Margaret was a homemaker and a member of the Old Order Amish Church.

Adam Z. Sensenig, 84, of New Holland, passed away on Monday, November 14, 2022, at his home after a brief illness. His wife of 63 years, Mary Lou (Martin) Sensenig, survives.
Born in New Holland, he was the son of the late David H. and Emma (Zimmerman) Sensenig.
He was a member of South Hinkletown Mennonite Church and a former owner of Sensenig's Furniture.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children: Kenneth M. married to Alma (Rissler) Sensenig and Mary Lou married to Reuben S. Martin, both of New Holland, 12 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, two brothers: Earl Ray Sensenig, New Holland and Loyd Z. Sensenig, Ephrata, four sisters: Vera (Elmer) Hoover, Ephrata, Anna (Jonas) Nolt, Peach Bottom, Nora (Isaac) Martin, Ephrata, and Erla Mae (Allen) Burkholder, Ephrata, and a brother-in-law Ammon Hoover, Ephrata.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Nelson M. and Neal M. Sensenig, a granddaughter Jennifer Martin, two brothers, Ivan Z. and John Z. Sensenig, and three sisters: Mary Z. (Aaron) Hurst, Emma Z. (Paul) Zimmerman, and Ella Z. (Ammon) Hoover.

Alayne Sensenig, 81, formerly of Manheim, passed away on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, at The Oaks of Carrollton. She was born in Kenhorst to the late Robert and Florence (Delgado) Yeakley and was the wife of the late Leon B. Sensenig who passed away in 2018.
She was a member of the former Evangel Assembly of God.
Alayne, along with her husband, previously owned Blue Bell Mobile Home Park. She enjoyed singing, attending church and was an animal lover. She especially loved spending time with her family.
Alayne is survived by two sons, Robert A., husband of Marlene (Fernandez) Sensenig of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Joseph L., husband of Melissa (White) Sensenig of Carrollton, GA; two granddaughters, Tatianna, wife of Doug Ogden of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Maggie Sensenig of Carrollton, GA and a great-granddaughter, Marina Ogden.
In addition to husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Yeakley.
A viewing will be held on Tuesday, March 22, 2022, from 6 to 8 PM at the Hammer Creek Mennonite Church, 590 Hammer Creek Road, Lititz. Arlan H. Sensenig, age 39 years, 3 months and 15 days, of Withee, passed away on Friday, Jan. 21, 2022, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in Saint Louis, Mo.
Services were at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2022, at Clark View Mennonite Church in the Town of Longwood. His final resting place will be at the church cemetery. Elvin Hoover, Kevin Martin, Randall Martin, Paul Wesley Oberholtzer and Jerry Brubaker presided. Pallbearers were Leroy Sensenig, Landis Sensenig, Elam Ray Sensenig, Stephen Burkholder, Leonard Burkholder and Larry Burkholder. Visitation was on Friday, Jan. 28, 2022, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the CAM Center (corner of Pine and Gorman Ave Thorp). The Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home of Owen is assisting the family with arrangements.
Arlan was born on Oct. 6, 1982, in Clark County, to Melvin S. and Alma H. (Hoover) Sensenig. He attended school until eighth grade. Arlan was united in marriage to Margaret B. Burkholder on Sept. 1, 2007, in the Town of Hoard. He owned and operated Black River Spray Foam LLC. He is remembered as a loving husband and father and was a good friend to many. Arlan also greatly enjoyed spending time in the joys of the outdoors.
Arlan is survived by his wife, Margaret; children: Adella Marian, Larren Melvin, Arlan Latrell, Angella Margaret, Logan Darrell and Ashley Mabel; father, Melvin S. Sensenig; brothers: Leroy of Lancaster, Pa., Landis (Rhoda), Elam Ray (Esther Mae) and Vernon; sisters: Darlene (Leon) Eberly and Louella Sensenig, all of Clark County.
He was preceded in death by a stillborn brother, Darrell; mother, Alma H. Sensenig; grandparents: Elam and Alta Sensenig and Frank and Rebecca Hoover.

John N. Sensenig, 82, of Nottingham, PA passed away May 21, 2022, in the Lancaster General Hospital, Lancaster, PA. He was the husband of Pauline B. (Weaver) Sensenig to whom he was married for 62 years. He was born in Gordonville, PA on June 15, 1939, a son of the late John B. Sensenig and Mary M. (Nolt) Sensenig.
John was a member of the Fairmount Mennonite Church of the Weaverland Conference and a retired farmer.

Lydia N. Sensenig, 94, a resident of Fairmount Homes, Ephrata, passed away at the home on Monday, April 4, 2022.
She was married January 27, 1951 to the late Amos Z. Sensenig who died in 1997. Born in Ephrata, she was the daughter of the late Elmer Z. and Mary Nolt High.
Lydia was a homemaker and a member of the Martindale Mennonite Church, Weaverland Conference. She enjoyed sewing comforters and quilts. Lydia had been a volunteer at Fairmount Homes for over 20 years.
Surviving is a son, Marvin H. husband of Rhoda Martin Sensenig of Ephrata; five daughters, Laura Mae wife of Noah K. Weaver of Terre Hill, Marian H. wife of Paul A. Horning of Reinholds; 37 grandchildren, 77 great grandchildren; and three sisters, Esther N. Nolt of Ephrata, Vera N. Zimmerman of New Holland, and Laura N. Martin of Ephrata; a daughter-in-law, Donna Bauder Sensenig of New Holland, and a son-in-law, Lloyd W. Martin of Blain, PA. She was preceded in death by a son, Edward H. Sensenig, a daughter, E. Susanna M. Sensenig, 97, of Ephrata, passed away Monday, December 19, 2022, at home. She was born in Lititz to the late Aaron H. and Mary N. (Martin) Martin and was the wife of the late Ezra Z. Sensenig.
Susanna was a member of Martindale Mennonite Church, Groffdale Conference.
She is survived by four children, John M., husband of Alta (Fox) Sensenig of New Holland, Lucy M., wife of Mervin Hoover of Ephrata, Leroy M., husband of Lucy (Burkholder) Sensenig of Dundee, NY, Martha M. Martin of Dundee, NY; 27 grandchildren and 77 great-grandchildren.

Roy M. Sensenig, 93, a resident of Fairmount Homes, died Tuesday, November 15, 2022 at the home. He had formerly lived in East Earl for many years. He was the husband of the late Anna Mae (Frederick) Sensenig who died in 2017. Born in Ephrata, he was the son of the late Harry L. and Anna M. Sensenig.
Roy had been a carpenter and was employed by A. L. Gerhart and then Glenn H. Gingrich, Inc. He was a member of the Goodville Mennonite Church and had been a trustee. He enjoyed helping others and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. An avid woodworker, he had made many pieces of furniture for his family.
Surviving is a daughter, Janice L. wife of Wilmer Stoner of Jonestown; two sons, Daryl G. husband of Dianne (Sauder) Sensenig of East Earl, and Dale L. husband of Sharon (Nolt) Sensenig of Lititz; four grandchildren, Justin, Kyle, Carina and Brent; six great-grandchildren, Colton, Kendal, Wyatt, Jaren, Cade and Avery; and two brothers, Irvin husband of Gladys Sensenig of Leola, and Arthur husband of Trudi Sensenig of Aurora, CO. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Jay Roy Sensenig, by a grandson Adrian Sensenig and by two brothers, Mervin and Chester Sensenig.
Roy was a great father and a dedicated husband who spent many years caring for his late wife. He will be greatly missed by all.

Shank, Duane
January 18, 1952 - April 20, 2022
Duane Shank, 70, died April 20, 2022, at his home in Goshen, Indiana. The cause was complications of COPD, said his wife, Ellen L. Kennel.
He was born January 18, 1952, in Chambersburg, Pa., to Luke J. and Anna Elizabeth Metzler Shank, and was raised in Lancaster, Pa. He graduated from Lancaster Mennonite High School and attended Eastern Mennonite University.
Duane was a resident of the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood in Washington, D.C. from 1973 to 2015 before moving to Goshen, Ind., in late 2015. He was an organizer and administrator in the peace and justice movement for more than 40 years, beginning with resisting the Vietnam-era draft. He worked as a community organizer in the rural South, in interfaith coalitions, in the nuclear weapons freeze and Central America solidarity movements of the 1980s, and as an anti-poverty activist. He had worked for the Virginia Community Development Organization, the Center on Conscience and War, the Committee for a SANE Nuclear Policy, the Institute for Policy Studies, among other organizations. He retired in 2014 from the progressive faith-based organization Sojourners, where he served as Senior Policy Advisor and Associate Editor of Sojourners magazine.
A longtime member of the Community of Christ ecumenical congregation in Washington, and then Assembly Mennonite Church in Goshen, he was passionately committed to working toward the coming of God’s reign on earth. Duane was a fan of Washington Nationals baseball and Notre Dame football and basketball. He was an avid reader, and enjoyed barbecuing and playing softball. He loved music, especially blues (Buddy Guy and Stevie Ray Vaughan) and bluegrass (Ralph Stanley), and played guitar for many years.
Duane is remembered as a man of integrity and humility who was known for his gentle thoughtfulness, steadying calmness, and principled commitment to peacemaking. He was a good listener and enjoyed mentoring young people, who saw in him a gentle spirit and bold faith.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter Celeste Grace Kennel-Shank and son-in-law Josiah Groff, two sisters—Calliope and Debbie (Terry) Miller, and a brother, Dan. He was predeceased by his parents.
The family expresses our thanks to Dr. Michelle Shelly, and all of the staff members of Goshen Home Care & Hospice who provided excellent care for more than two years, especially Mary, Claire, and Kim.
A private burial was held at Violett Cemetery in Goshen. A memorial service will be held at Assembly Mennonite Church at a later date. Esther May Eberly Shank, 81, formerly of Harrisonburg, went to her eternal home on March 11, 2022. She had relocated to Port Republic to be closer to her daughter, Krista Rodes, and her husband Allen, where she received family care.
She was born on January 9, 1941, to the late Edwin and Martha Eberly. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Louis Shank Jr, on October 16, 2020; a brother Harold Eberly; a sister-in-law, Betty Eberly; and a brother-in-law, Jake Wenger.
Esther May and Leonard were blessed with four children, Richard (Linda) Shank, Steve (Angie) Shank, Bruce Shank, and Krista (Allen) Rodes. They were also blessed with ten grandchildren, Quentin Shank, John Shank, Katie (Kelton) Warner, Carson (Charlotte) Shank, Erin Shank, Kyle Shank, Erica Rodes, Lorna (Gordon) Knicely, Brady Rodes, and Corina Rodes. She treasured each of her grandchildren dearly. She is also survived by her siblings, Mary Lou Wenger, Wayne (Marilyn) Eberly, Ruth (Ralph) Shirk, Edith (Sam) Good, Elsie (Willard) Wenger, Willis Eberly, David (Martha) Eberly, and Lois (Paul) Wenger.
Esther May had a strong faith in God as she faced many life challenges. Her positive attitude was a true inspiration. She was an encourager and led by example. She made many friends as she worked at Woodland Plants Greenhouses. She was a member of Bank Mennonite Church.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 14, 2022, at Bank Mennonite Church with the Ministers of the Church officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The casket will be open prior to the service.

April 2, 1951 - December 23, 2022
Galen Leroy Shank, 71, from the Mount Clinton area of Rockingham County, passed away Friday, Dec. 23, 2022, after living with Leukemia for 1 ½ years.
Galen was born April 2, 1951, to Marie Shank of the Mount Clinton area and the late Norman Rhodes Shank. On April 1, 1972, Galen married Susan (Steffen) Shank. After several different employments, one being five years with the Rockingham County Sheriff's Department, he settled on the family dairy farm and became co-owner of Double "S" Dairy. He was a member of Weaver's Mennonite Church and an active member of the Clover Hill Ruritan Club. He also served as a local delegate for the Dairy Farmers of America Co-Op.
Galen and Susie loved to travel and took advantage of retirement. They visited all 50 states, parts of Europe, and took lots of cruises. Sarasota, Fla. was their winter home. Galen never met a stranger and easily made life-time friends. He took pride in his family and made others a priority. He loved cars, hunting, sharing jokes, and spending time with friends.
Surviving, in addition to his wife and mother, are a son, Chris Shank and wife, Teresa; daughter, Jennifer Middlebrook and husband, Chris; four grandsons, Channing and Tyson Shank and Rhodes and Sawyer Middlebrook; special family member, Susanna Knicely; sister, Lois Depoy and husband, Todd; brother, Sheldon Shank and wife, Barbara; and Susie's five siblings and their spouses; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. Due to current construction being done on Weavers Mennonite Church, the service will be held at Harrisonburg Mennonite Church with Pastor Curt Stutzman and Donnie Jenkins officiating. Casual attire is appropriate.

Shank, Kathryn Showalter
August 20, 1920 - August 3, 2022
Kathryn Showalter Shank, 101, died peacefully Aug. 3, 2022, at Mumaw House at VMRC. She was born Aug. 20, 1920, and grew up on the family farm with her parents, H.D.H. and Flora May Showalter, along with her eight brothers and sisters.
On April 26, 1941, she married Samuel S. Shank, to whom she was married for 65 years until his death in 2006. They had four children, three who survive: Richard S. (wife, Linda), Randall E. (wife, Janet), and Emily K. Their oldest daughter, Nancy Bender (husband, Jon Scott) died in 2005.
Kathryn was the last surviving member of her immediate family being predeceased by brothers, Carl, Howard, Jacob, Owen, and James, and by sisters, Mary Emma Eby, Ethel Strite, and Doris Trumbo. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Joyce Showalter.
She was a lifelong member of Trissels Mennonite Church, where she taught Children’s Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was a member of the Gideons Auxiliary.
Kathryn was a wonderful wife and mother, a great cook, and someone who enjoyed her vegetable garden and flowers. She will always be loved and remembered by her seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren for wonderful family get-togethers. She loved and was loved by all her caregivers at VMRC for the last 15 years.
Burial will be private at Trissels Mennonite Cemetery with a memorial service to be planned for a later date.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Grandle Funeral Home of Broadway.

Shank, Thelma Jean Trumbo
August 13, 1931 - April 25, 2022
Thelma Jean (Trumbo) Shank passed over into the arms of her Loving Father on April 25, 2022, at age 90, at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community, where she had been a resident since 2016. Thelma was born on Aug. 13, 1931, to Sarah (Myers) Trumbo and Norvell Preston Trumbo Sr. of Broadway, Va. She was one of triplets, along with her identical twin sister, Alma (Jane) Trumbo, with the third child having died at birth.
Thelma was preceded in death by her mother, Sarah (Myers) Trumbo; father, Norvell Preston Trumbo Sr.; uncle, John Myers; aunt, Lydia Myers; brother, Norvell Preston Trumbo Jr.; sister-in-law, Doris (Showalter) Trumbo; sister, Helen (Trumbo) Shank; and brother-in-law, Stuart Shank.
She is survived by her husband, Rowland W. Shank Sr.; her twin sister, Alma (Jane) Alderfer; brother-in-law, Joe Alderfer (Harrisonburg, Va.); son, Rowland W. Shank Jr.; daughter-in-law, Donna (Burkhart) Shank (Broadway, Va.); son, Don W. Shank (Broadway, Va.); daughter-in-law, Marian Shank, and son, Eric Grossman Shank (Palmyra, Pa.). She is also survived by two granddaughters, Sarah Amanda Shank (Seattle, Wash.) and Emily Virginia Shank (Pittsburgh, Pa.).
Thelma grew up in Broadway, Va., where she and her identical twin were known as “the Trumbo twins” and where she and her sister could frequently be seen roller-skating the sidewalks of Broadway during the 1930s and 40s. She also loved to spend time on the next-door farm of her uncle, John Myers, who farmed with work-horses on land where the Walnut Ridge housing development is currently located.
Thelma graduated from Eastern Mennonite School, followed by enrolling in the RMH School of Nursing in 1950. She began dating her then boyfriend and fiancé, Rowland Shank Sr. at the beginning of her nursing program, which at that time did not permit female nursing students to be married while being a student. As a result, she and Rowland waited three years to be married, following her graduation from nursing school in 1953. They were married for 68 years.
Thelma’s interest in nursing began during her employment with Dr. Charles Hertzler at the Green Valley Clinic in Bergton, Va., where her duties included driving Dr. Hertzler to his house calls. She later served as a nurse at RMH in the early 1960s. She made a mid-life career change and attended Philadelphia School of Art for courses in Interior Design and Decorating. She then began her own business in Interior Decorating and enjoyed working with many clients in the Lebanon, Lancaster, and Dauphin County, Pa. areas, where she and the family lived at the time. She brought her own brand of perfectionism and love of beauty to her interior decorating.
Thelma was a devoted, emotionally intense, and loving mother who willingly sacrificed much for her children and family. She was a devout Christian who sang in the Mennonite Hour choir, along with her husband and her sister-in-law, Audrey Shank. She was a member of Harrisonburg Mennonite church. She was the consummate ‘Southern woman’ with an emphasis on politeness, manners, and social propriety. However, she was also the holder of strong opinions which she was never shy about sharing, and was a benefactor of the legendary “Trumbo temperament”, accurately described in their family history book as: “Trumbo women are not easily angered, but when they are, they are best left alone.” Her family members (and others) were acutely aware of that, and conducted themselves accordingly.
Thelma was deeply loved and appreciated by her family and all who knew her, and she will always be missed and remembered.
A memorial service will be held at Harrisonburg Mennonite Church on Saturday, May 7, at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be for members of the family at Zion Mennonite Church in Broadway, Va.

Shank, Wilma E. Hollopeter
May 30, 1924 - March 31, 2022
Wilma E. Hollopeter Shank, age 97, died peacefully in her sleep on March 31, 2022, after complications from an incapacitating fall. She was born May 30, 1924, in the home of Ray and Velma Spicher Hollopeter at Boneta in Medina County, Ohio.
After 12 years at Sharon Center schools, she graduated valedictorian (1942). In her first semester at Goshen College, she formed close friendships with seven freshman women and one David Shank. She majored in Home Economics, minoring in English and French. After her B.A. (1946), Wilma returned to Sharon Center to teach high school for two years and married David Shank in 1948. In 1950, the Mennonite Board of Missions invited the couple to re-establish, 400 years after its decimation, an Anabaptist community in Belgium, where they worked as a team for 23 years. Teaching and study took them back to Goshen College and to the University of Aberdeen (Scotland). For the next decade, Abidjan (Ivory Coast) served as their base for relating to African Independent Churches and establishing a Documentation Center about AIC history. In retirement, they built a home near Amigo Centre (Sturgis, Michigan) that drew fond gatherings of family and friends. In 2010, Goshen College honored them with its "Culture for Service" Award.
Wilma outlived her husband David and her four siblings (Sheldon, Carl, Phoebe Yoder, and Glenn). She is survived by her children Rachel (Jim) Shenk (Goshen), Crissie (Tim) Buckwalter (Goshen), Stephen (Brussels, Belgium), Mike (Carol) (Madison, Wisconsin), her former daughter-in-law Jean Gerber (Singers Glen, Virginia), four sisters-in-law, nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and their progeny, as well as three of the seven college friends who for 76 years corresponded by circle-letter. Her letter writing did not spare the politicians who were supposed to represent her peace position.
Wilma wishes to be remembered for living her life with conviction, continual challenge, and joy exercising her gifts of homemaking, parenting, witnessing, and working with David for more than 62 years. Many guests on three continents enjoyed her gracious hospitality. Her family and friends also remember her as a woman of deep Christian faith, a gracious and caring presence, an avid reader, a lover of diverse music, an exemplar of good taste, and an eternal optimist.
Following Wilma's wishes, her burial in Violett Cemetery will be private. A celebration of her life with music and memories is scheduled for Saturday, April 9, 2022, venue to be announced.
Shenk, Dorothy Wenger
August 7, 1939 - August 6, 2022
Dorothy Wenger Shenk, age 82, departed this life Aug. 6, 2022, after a life-long fight with respiratory diseases; she was joyfully welcomed into the arms of Jesus where she is effortlessly breathing celestial air.
Dorothy was born Aug. 7, 1939, in Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late Benjamin David Wenger and Ethel Edmondson Wenger. On Jan. 27, 1959, she married Clayton Otho Shenk of Elida, Ohio, who survives.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Randy Shenk and wife, Kelly (Krivsky) of Harrisonburg; her daughter, Carmen Shenk and husband, Xaver Wilhelmy of Staunton, Va.; two grandsons, Tyler David Shenk and wife, Katie (Leachman), and Corey John Shenk and girlfriend, Becca Hoffman; and stepgranddaughter, Sarah Wilhelmy of Austria. Also surviving are brothers, William B. Wenger of Newport News, Va. and Robert D. Wenger and wife, Orpha (Rohrer); sister, Evelyn (Wenger) Kratz and husband, Paul; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dorothy loved the Lord, her family, music, and bluebirds.
Dorothy was invited to the Mennonite Church as a young teen by a caring friend, where she began her life journey with the Lord. After her marriage, she served as a Sunday School teacher and music leader at Beldor Mennonite Church for 17 years. Dorothy also served as a leader in Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) for 15 years. She was invited to Weavers Mennonite Church where she served in Children’s ministry as well as Worship music leader.
She considered the times spent with family a precious gift, especially times spent with her two grandsons when they were young. Family gatherings with children, grandchildren and siblings were always a blessing to her. Her family was blessed not only by her love and godly role model, but also by her continual, faithful prayers on their behalf.
She sang with the EMC College Chorale, Shenandoah Valley Choral Society, and several church choral groups.
Dorothy attended Pleasant Hill Elementary School, Dayton High School, and graduated from Eastern Mennonite High School. She also studied at Eastern Mennonite College (now EMU) and Madison College (now JMU).
Dorothy was a professional floral and cake designer. She and her husband, Clayton, owned Confectionately Yours, a gift and decorative accessory store. She later worked at VMRC Park Gables, in dining services and at Traditions Family Restaurant, and volunteered at Gift & Thrift.
Pastors Phil Kanagy and Curt Stutzman will conduct a memorial service at Weavers Mennonite Church in Harrisonburg, Va., Aug. 13, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be private.

John Burnell Shenk, 91, of Lititz, and formerly of East Petersburg, died March 28, 2022 at Landis Homes where he and his wife, Myrtle resided for over 14 years. Born in Penn Township; he was the son of the late Elam K. and Rhoda Charles Shenk, and the husband of Myrtle Mann Brenneman Shenk for 65 years.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Myrtle are two sons: Carl E. Shenk husband of Lorna Beth Shantz of Reinholds, Alan L. husband of Sharon Burkholder Shenk of Waynesboro, VA, a daughter, Audrey J. Shenk, Harrisonburg, VA; three grandchildren: Christopher J. S. Shenk, Ranita J. Shenk, and Rachel J. Shenk wife of Andry Stutzman, a brother, Charles E. Shenk of Goshen, IN, and two sisters: Alma J. wife of E.J. Albrecht, Forest Grove, OR, and Dorothy A. Shenk, of Lititz.
John graduated from Lancaster Mennonite School in 1948 and from Eastern Mennonite College in 1954. He was ordained in 1963 and served as a minister at East Petersburg Mennonite Church for 35 years. He also worked as Administrator and Counselor for the Sharing Programs of Lancaster Mennonite Conference for 36 years.
John's interests outside of work were gardening, reading, and home repair. He did everything with care, always wanting to do a task well, rarely in a hurry. He enjoyed visiting with many people and always gave them his careful attention. Whether as an employee or volunteer, his greatest passion was serving Jesus and others with humility through the church and numerous church agencies.
The family extends their gratitude to the devoted staff at Landis Homes who cared for John's healthcare needs over the past two years.
Memorial services for John will be announced at a future date. Interment will be at the East Petersburg Mennonite Church Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

November 29, 1953 - March 3, 2022
Myerstown - Paul R. Shenk, age 68, of Myerstown, PA, loving father and grandfather, passed away from complications related to bladder cancer on March 3, 2022 in the Hershey Medical Center. He was born November 29, 1953 in Kitchener, ON Canada, the son of the late Harold and Edna Shantz Shenk. Paul was a member of Lebanon Valley Mennonite Church. He enjoyed spending time with family, camping and playing Rook. Paul was a salesman for Martin Appliance for many years and was a bus driver. He married Rachael High on April 5, 1975 and she passed away on March 30, 2014.
He is survived by 1 son and 4 daughters. Edwin R. (Joanne), Womelsdorf, Glenda (Steven) Sensenig, Millersville, Sheila (Andrew) Burkholder, Reading, Edith (Wendell) Troyer, Myerstown, Melissa (Andrew) Schreiber, Lebanon; 22 grandchildren; brothers: Nathan (Betty), Wilmer (Mary Kate), Dwight (Ellen), David, and Eldon (Esther); sisters: Reba Shenk and Elizabeth (Ammon) Weaver and lots of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother Stanley and a sister Miriam Shenk and a sister-in-law Mabel Shenk.
There will be a viewing on Sunday March 6, 2022 in Lebanon Valley Mennonite Church, 7821 Lancaster Ave., Myerstown, PA 17067 from 1-3pm and 5-7pm. Funeral services will be Monday at 10:00 am in the church with interment in the adjoining church cemetery.

Mose E. Shetler, 73, of 7565 Harrison Road, Fredericksburg, died Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2022 at Wooster Community Hospital after a period of declining health.
He was born in Wayne County on Nov. 13, 1948 to Enos and Sarah (Yoder) Shetler and married Mary D. Byler on Oct. 4, 1973. He was a member of the Old Order Amish Church.

Shetler, Peter Daniel
January 20, 1957 - September 26, 2022
After a full life of generosity and service to others, Peter Daniel Shetler died Monday, September 26, 2022 in Goshen, Indiana at the age of 65. Peter touched many lives through his kindness and helpful spirit. His death is grieved by many around the world.
Peter was born on January 20, 1957, in Bluffton, Ohio, to Luther Leroy Shetler and Geneva (Stamm) Shetler, the fourth of five siblings. He married his teenage sweetheart, Jan Bender Shetler, on April 18, 1977 at Camp Friedenswald. Together they attended Goshen College, Bluffton University and Peter eventually graduated from Utah State University in agronomy. Jan and Peter then served for 11 years with Mennonite Central Committee on the continent of Africa in Ethiopia, Zaire/Congo, and Tanzania. Their son Daniel was born in Ethiopia and second son Paul in Tanzania. After MCC service they attended graduate school at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Peter studied agroforestry. As Jan completed her doctoral research in Tanzania, Peter volunteered on a GIS project in the Serengeti National Park. Together with Peter’s brother, Terry, and sister-in-law Bonnie, they bought a dryland farm near Dove Creek, Colorado. They lived there for over three years before moving back to Goshen, Indiana in 1999 for Jan to begin her work as a history professor at Goshen College. In 2000, Peter began working for Bethany Christian Schools. In more than 20 years there, he oversaw facilities and technology. It was a place and community he loved, and where he died in an accident.
Peter was a citizen of the world and lived in many countries, including Jamaica, Haiti, Ethiopia, Zaire/Congo, Portugal, Tanzania, and Senegal. Everywhere he went, he delighted in meeting new people, learning new cultures, trying new foods, and making new friends. Peter was adopted as a beloved brother in many communities. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and exploring the outdoors with his grandchildren. He readily helped people and often shared food with them. He loved to laugh and make others laugh, and he was not afraid to cry. He was affable and kind, patient and loving. He could teach students how to butcher and how to use their devices responsibly. He could fix anything and once told a potential employer at a repair shop, “If you tell me what it’s supposed to do, I’ll make it work.” Wherever he lived Peter became an active member of a Church community, using his physical and spiritual gifts daily to support others.
Peter is survived by his loving wife Jan Bender Shetler; children Daniel (Maytal Saltiel) Shetler, Paul (Rebecca) Shetler Fast; grandchildren Asiko, Madeline, Ari, Gideon, and Lena; siblings Joenita (Stanley) Clemens, Terry (Bonnie Wolfe) Shetler, Lu Derstine, and Tami (Michael) Hardy; many in-laws, nephews and nieces; and beloved adopted families around the world. He and Jan often opened their home to host international students, who often became like children to them. Peter is predeceased in death by his parents, Luther and Geneva Shetler; mother-in-law Naomi Bender; and brother-in-law Dale Derstine.
Visitation will be Sunday, Oct. 2, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Berkey Avenue Mennonite Fellowship. The funeral service will be held Monday, Oct. 3, at College Mennonite Church, Goshen, starting at 9 a.m.

July 21, 1938 - December 31, 2022
Ivan M. Shirk, 84, of New Holland, died unexpectedly on Saturday, December 31, 2022, at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital. His wife, Anna S. (Nolt) Shirk, survives.
Born in Narvon, he was the son of the late Samuel R. and Florence (Martin) Shirk.
Ivan was a retired dairy farmer. In his retirement, he operated Shirk's Electric Tool Repair.
He was a member of the New Holland Mennonite Church, Groffdale Conference.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by six children: Marlene N. (Lloyd) Reiff, Lititz, Lester N. (Alta) Shirk, Woodbury, Leon N. (Pauline) Shirk, Owen, WI, Nelson N. (Irene) Shirk, Owen, WI, Harlan N. (Susan) Shirk, New Holland, Mary Jane N. (Justus) Weaver, East Earl, 42 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, four siblings: Harvey (Alma) Shirk, Annetta (Lloyd) Zimmerman, Ida (Walter) Hurst, Amanda Shirk, a brother-in-law Elam Zimmerman and a sister-in-law Ruth Shirk.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Rachel Shirk, three brothers: Amos, Paul, and Martin Shirk, and two sisters: Esther Zimmerman and Naomi Shirk.

Paul M. Shirk, 85, of Narvon, died Saturday, September 24, 2022, at his home. His wife, Ruth S. (Shirk) Shirk, survives. His first wife, Esther H. (Nolt) Shirk, preceded him in death in 2018.
Born in Narvon, he was the son of the late Samuel and Florence (Martin) Shirk.
Paul was a retired farmer and a member of Churchtown Mennonite Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Kenneth married to Janet (Zimmerman) Shirk, Narvon, 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, and five siblings: Ivan married to Anna (Nolt) Shirk, New Holland, Annetta married to Lloyd H. Zimmerman, Terre Hill, Ida married to Walter Hurst, Morgantown, Harvey married to Alma (Weaver) Shirk, Churchtown, and Amanda Shirk, Churchtown.
In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Elizabeth and Samuel Shirk, and four siblings: Esther married to Elam Zimmerman of Narvon, Martin M. married to Eva Shirk, infant brother Amos Shirk, and infant sister Naomi Shirk.

Shirk, Ralph Knicely
June 17, 1948 - April 12, 2022
Ralph Knicely Shirk, 73, a resident of Rockingham, passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2022, at his home. Mr. Shirk was born June 17, 1948, in Dayton, Va., to the late John Paul and Martha Ruth Knicely Shirk.
He worked as a farmer and a licensed neuromuscular therapist. He was a member of Pleasant View Old Order Church.
On Oct. 2, 1968, he married Ruth Eberly Shirk, who survives.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Shirk is survived by his daughter, Brenda Knicely of Rockingham and husband, Eldon Knicely; siblings, Helen Harold, Marion Shirk, Virginia Ann Cook, of Bridgewater, Arlene Atkins and husband, Steve, of Dayton, Stella Knott and husband, Jake, of Hinton and Leroy Shirk and wife, Patricia, of Harrisonburg; grandchildren, Kendra Stoltzfus and husband, Christopher, of Weyers Cave, Lisa Knicely, Donna Sue Knicely, Krystal Knicely and Amber Knicely, all of Rockingham; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and many friends.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Shirk was preceded in death by his brothers-in-law, Lenford Harold, Larry Cook, Harold Eberly, Jake Wenger and Leonard Shank Jr. and sisters-in-law, Betty Eberly and Esther May Shank.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 16, 2022, at Pleasant View Old Order Mennonite Church with the ministers of the church officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Ruth W. Shirk, 76, of Martindale, died Thursday, November 17, 2022, at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. Born in West Earl Twp., she was the daughter of the late Martin S. and Esther B. (Weaver) Shirk.
Ruth worked for more than 40 years at Ephrata Community Hospital in the dietary department. She was a member of Martindale Mennonite Church, Groffdale Conference.
Surviving is a brother, Eli married to Anna Shirk, Mifflinburg, four sisters: Mary Leid, Edna Martin, Esther Shirk, all of Martindale, and Martha married to J. David Martin, Shippensburg, and two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Shirk, Shiloh, OH and Arlene Shirk, Beavertown, and 43 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Susie Shirk and two brothers, Edwin and Clarence Shirk.
Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, November 23, 2022, at 9:30 a.m. at Martindale (Frame) Mennonite Church with Bishop Leon Zimmerman, Alvin Leid, Leon Horst, John Mark Martin, and Jerome Wanner officiating. Walter B. Shirk, of Ephrata, passed away suddenly on Monday, October 17, 2022.
He was born in Brecknock Township, Lancaster County, PA, to the late Aaron M. and Amanda (Brubacher) Shirk. He was the loving husband of Irene (Sensenig) Shirk. His first wife was the late Marian Martin, who passed away in 2014.
He was a member of Faith Mennonite Church in Stevens, PA.
Walter was a farmer most of his life.
He is survived by two children, Clydine Sauder (James) and Clifford Shirk (Dawn), and 12 siblings, Daniel Shirk (Edna), Pete Shirk (Naomi), Aaron Shirk (Ruth), Rhoda Brubaker (Mervin), Martha High, Mary Weiler (Roland), Louisa Martin (Ivan), Irene Brubaker (Marlin), Wesley Shirk (Wanda), Lydia Hoover (Carl), Rose Anna Nolt (Lewis), and Amanda Martin (Henry). Walter is also survived by ten grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Walter had five stepchildren, Roger Sensenig (Shelley), Sharon Reiff (Ivan), Trevor Sensenig (Roxanne), Jacqueline Sensenig (Josh), and Mandy Hoffman (Dwayne), 12 step grandchildren, and 13 step great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Sarah Ann Zimmerman and Ruth Weiler.
A visitation will be held on Friday, October 21, 2022, from 2:00-4:00 PM and 5:00-8:00 PM at Faith Mennonite Fellowship located at 335 North Line Road, Stevens, PA. Following the PA visitation, there will be another visitation from 2:00-4:00 PM and 5:00-8:00 PM on Monday, October 24, 2022, at Hillcrest Community Center located at 23098 State Route M, Memphis, MO. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at Cornerstone Mennonite Church located at 20000 County Road 655, Memphis, MO.

Showalter, Daniel J.
May 31, 1978 - February 3, 2022
Daniel J. Showalter, 43, of Reinholds, passed away on Thursday, February 3, 2022.
He was born in Ephrata to Harold Showalter of Denver and the late Jane (Good) Showalter.
A man of faith, Daniel was a lifetime member of Hinkletown Mennonite Church, where he was an assistant pastor for 6 years. Dan enjoyed cycling, theology and historical books, had a prodigious library and was an avid reader. He also loved a good cup of coffee.
In addition to his father, Daniel is survived by 5 siblings, Jonathan Showalter, husband of LouAnn, Nathan Showalter, husband of Cheri, Jesse Showalter, husband of Jennifer, Aaron Showalter, and Abigail, wife of Randall Zimmerman. He is also survived by 14 nieces and nephews.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by sister, Sarah Showalter.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, February 10, 2022, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Hinkletown Mennonite Church, 2031 28th Division Highway, Ephrata. A memorial service will follow at 10:30 a.m., with Glenn Sauder and Jared Weaver officiating. Interment is private in the Hinkletown Mennonite Cemetery.

Showalter, Dwight Rohrer
July 23, 1963 - January 6, 2022
Dwight Rohrer Showalter, 58, of Bridgewater, passed away Thursday, Jan. 6, 2022.
Dwight was born July 23, 1963, a son of the late Grace Magdalene (Rohrer) and Claude Rohrer Showalter.
He worked as a truck driver. He was a life member of the Bridgewater Fire Department and was a member of Summit Church of the Brethren.
On May 14, 1992, he was united in marriage to Brenda (Shipp) Showalter, who survives.
Dwight is also survived by a son, Coleman Showalter and wife, Kelly, of Staunton; grandson, Silas Avery Showalter; sisters, Arlene Esh of Ephrata, Pa., Annie Wenger and husband, Leonard, of Mount Crawford and Martha Knicely and husband, Everett, of Dayton; brother-in-law, Warren Shank and sister-in-law, Eunice Shank Showalter.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by sisters, Carolyn Shank and Evelyn Shank; brother, Stephen C. Showalter; and brothers-in-law, David Esh and John Robert Shank.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2022, at Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, at Summit Church of the Brethren in Bridgewater with The Rev. Tim Craver and Pastor Cole Scrogham officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Showalter, Harry Heatwole

Harry Heatwole Showalter, 97, a resident of Dayton, passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2022, at his home.
Mr. Showalter was born March 13, 1925, in Dayton and was a son of the late Michael R. and Fannie Bell Heatwole Showalter.
He was a farmer and a member of Riverdale Old Order Mennonite Church.
On July 12, 1951, he married Lydia Mae Rohrer Showalter, who survives.
Also surviving are his children, Wayne Showalter and wife, Lydia, of Criders, Frances Wenger and husband, Dwight, Judy Witmer and husband, Carl, Karen Wenger and husband, Franklin, Harry Lee Showalter and wife, Michelle, all of Bridgewater and Linda Showalter and husband, Boyd, of Dayton; siblings, Margaret Cline and husband, James, of Harrisonburg, Joseph Showalter and wife, Frances, of Timberville, Fannie Bell Good and husband, Willis, of Dayton, S. Frank Showalter and wife, Cathy, of Timberville; sister-in-law, Orva Showalter of Bridgewater; 28 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Showalter was preceded in death by his siblings, Edward Showalter and wife, Miriam, Marvin Showalter and wife, Ruth, Harold Showalter and wife, Melva, Dan Showalter and wife, Marie, Mary Rhodes and husband, Norman, William Showalter and wife, Mary Ellen, John Showalter, Eunice Knicely and husband, Edward; and two great-grandchildren, Jeremy Wayne Showalter Jr. and Taylor Faith Zimmerman.
Ministers of the church will conduct a funeral service Saturday, April 2, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. at Riverdale Old Order Mennonite Church. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The body will be taken to the home where friends may call on Friday, April 1, from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Showalter, Joseph I.
December 11, 1938 - November 11, 2022
Joseph I. Showalter, 83, of Timberville, passed away Nov. 11, 2022, at Shenandoah Place in New Market.
He was born Dec. 11, 1938, a son of the late Michael R. and Fannie Heatwole Showalter.
Joe was the owner of Showalter’s Orchard and Greenhouse and operated it with his family for 40 plus years. After retiring, you could find Joe almost daily at the orchard visiting with the employees and customers and proudly watching Shannon and his family evolving the business into what it is today. In the Fall, Joe’s favorite pastime was taking his grandchildren hunting. Joe never met a stranger and was a special friend to so many. He loved to make people laugh. Joe was a member of Mt. Olivet Church of the Brethren.
On Dec. 1, 1967, he married the former Frances V. Litten, who survives.
He is also survived by three sons, Shannon L. Showalter and wife, Sarah, Scott L. Showalter and Slade L. Showalter and wife, Angelique, all of Timberville; seven grandchildren, who were the light of his life, Benjamin, Ava, Taylor, Briar, Easton, Sage and Addisyn Showalter, all of Timberville; one brother, S. Frank Showalter and wife, Cathy, of Timberville; and two sisters, Margaret Cline and husband, James, of Harrisonburg and Fannie Bell Good and husband, Willis, of Dayton.
Joe is preceded in death by eight brothers, Edward, Marvin, Harold, Michael, John, William “Bill”, Dan and Harry Showalter; and two sisters, Mary Rhodes and Eunice Knicely.
The Rev. Victor Norris will conduct a funeral service Tuesday, Nov. 15, at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Olivet Church of the Brethren near Timberville. Burial will follow at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery on North Mountain Road. Family and friends are invited to gather for a meal following the service back at Showalter’s Orchard.

Laura K. Showalter, age 74, of South Wayne, WI, entered into rest Tuesday, May 3, 2022, at her residence surrounded by family.
Laura was born June 13, 1947 in Terre Hill, PA, the daughter of Phares M. and Lena B. (Kurtz) Huber. One June 13, 1970, she was united in marriage with Enos D. Showalter, with whom she shared the joys and sorrows of life for nearly 52 years. This union was blessed with 16 children. Laura committed her life to the Lord in her youth. She left us an outstanding example of loyalty as a wife and mother.
Laura is survived by her husband, Enos D. Showalter; sixteen children, Lena Showalter, Mt. Hermon, KY, Emma (Justus) Kulp, Mt. Hermon, KY, Daniel (Keely) Showalter, Glasgow, KY, Ezra (Ruth) Showalter, Dexter, ME, Dorcas Showalter, Mt. Hermon, KY, Della Showalter, Mt. Shreiner, Robert Lee
July 11, 1942 - April 1, 2022
Robert Lee Shreiner, age 79, born July 11, 1942, in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, died April 1, 2022 of complications from Lewy Body Dementia in Goshen, Indiana.
Bob spent the first 23 years of his life working on the family farm with his mother, Fannie, her sister, Anna, and his three siblings: John, Lois, and James. His father, Lester, died in an untimely farm accident when Bob was seven years old. The local Mennonite community helped support the family through the challenging years of operating the farm after the loss of their husband and father. Bob’s gratitude for God’s love shown through the support of his local church community led him to a 45-year career in pastoral ministry.
He graduated from Lancaster Mennonite High School in Pennsylvania. He studied bible and religion as an undergraduate at Messiah College and received a graduate degree in religion from Eastern Mennonite University. He was licensed and ordained in pastoral ministry in 1969. He served at churches in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Indiana. He finished his career as a chaplain at Oaklawn Psychiatric Center in Goshen, Indiana.
Bob volunteered in many leadership positions over his career including Chair of the Board of Directors of Brook Lane Psychiatric Hospital, Board of Directors of Mennonite Central Committee, Executive Secretary of the Atlantic Coast Conference of the Mennonite Church, and on the Goshen College Board of Overseers. He enjoyed travel to Africa, the Caribbean, and throughout North America for church work. A volunteer highlight was working on a Vietnamese refugee resettlement committee in Pennsylvania after the war.
He was a committed Rotarian and believed in their motto, Service Above Self. He was a member of Rotary Clubs in Gettysburg, PA, Bladensburg, MD, Souderton, PA, and Goshen, IN. He was named Gettysburg Rotarian of the Year and served as President of the Souderton Rotary Club and Goshen Rotary Club.
Bob married Mary Ann Hershey, whom he treasured to the end, in May 1964. They had five children: Robert Shreiner II (Katharine), Timothy Shreiner (Cheryl), Lori Shreiner (Jude), William Shreiner (JoAnn) and Cheryl Shreiner (Wendel). They have 12 grandchildren: Conrad Shreiner, Evan Shreiner, Noah Shreiner (Maggie), Rachel Shreiner, Jacob Shreiner, Benjamin Shreiner, Nicole Caugherty Han (Harry), Ian Shreiner Barger, Raina Shreiner Barger, Michael Shreiner, Quinn Shreiner Landes, Cora Shreiner Landes, and a great-granddaughter, Sage Annalee.
Bob loved people, including their imperfections, and strived to model Christ’s love towards all. He experienced profound loss at an early age, but kept the faith, remained optimistic, laughed a lot, and used those experiences to serve others with compassion. He enjoyed spending time with family on camping trips, gatherings at the northern Pennsylvania family cabin, and attending his children and grandchildren’s academic and athletic events. He will be profoundly missed.
Bob will be buried at Bossler Mennonite Church in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania. A memorial service will be held at the church. The family asks that any memorial contributions go to The Rotary Foundation Disaster Response Fund to support Ukrainian refugee relief efforts.

Shrock, Louise Steury
October 4, 1922 - November 24, 2022
Louise Shrock, 100, of Goshen, formerly of Topeka, passed away peacefully into the presence of the Lord at 1:00 am, on Thursday, November 24, 2022 at Greencroft Health Care Center, in Goshen. She was born on October 4, 1922, in New Haven to Victor and Lucy (Lengacher) Steury. On October 28, 1944 in Topeka she married Sherman M. Shrock, he died September 26, 2015.
Surviving are three daughters, Joanne (Mervin) Mast of Topeka, Jeanne (Glen) Riegsecker of Goshen, Karen (Galen) Miller of Topeka; eight grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren; and a caregiver/companion, Melinda Troyer.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sisters, Marie Cross and Jeanette Fry; two brothers, Edwin "Bud" Steury and Virgil Steury.
Louise was a homemaker and an active member of Townline Mennonite Church, teaching Sunday School and Bible School. She was overly generous with her time volunteering for many organizations, including the Indiana Cutting Room from 1955-1972 and MDS with her husband. She owned and operated Sherman's Department Store with her husband from 1971-1977 and wintered in Florida for 41 years. She crocheted afghans, making one for each of her great grandchildren. She learned how to use a computer and wrote a memoir about her life at the age of 80. Louise was a prayer warrior and will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 pm on Monday, November 28, at Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, 1003 South Main Street Middlebury. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Tuesday, November 29, at Townline Mennonite Church, 2165 S. 1000 W. Shipshewana. Services will be conducted by Pastor Dean Yoder. Burial will be in Townline Cemetery, Shipshewana. Memorials may be given to GNS/USA for bible distribution in East Europe.

April 1, 1937 - January 21, 2022
Paul John Shrock, 84, of Goshen, passed away, Friday, January 21, 2022, at his home surrounded by family.
He was born April 1, 1937, in Goshen to John E. and Ruth K. (Yoder) Shrock.
On August 26, 1956, he married Lucille Bontrager in Goshen.
She survives along with three sons, Stephen (Marcia) Shrock and Wesley (Donna) Shrock, both of Louisville, Kentucky, and Weldon (Jenell) Shrock, Rosedale, Ohio; seven grandchildren; Bryon (Jenna) Shrock, Louisville, Tim (Ashley) Shrock, Jeffersonville, Indiana, Brooke (Scott) Swartzentruber, Columbus, Ohio, Natalie (Zak) Bushon, Louisville, Brittany (Isaac) Fisher, Rosedale, Ohio, Krista Shrock, Marysville, Ohio, Greg Shrock, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, two great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Marion (Diane) Shrock, Goshen and Carl (Judy) Shrock, Middlebury.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Franklin P. Shrock; a daughter, Grace Y. Shrock; and a sister, Rosetta R. Shrock.
After graduating from Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Virginia he worked as a medical technologist in Louisville, Kentucky for 37 years at the University of Louisville - Jewish Hospital, retiring in 2002 and moving back to Goshen.
He was part of planting a church, (Louisville Mennonite Fellowship), to support the ongoing voluntary service program of Rosedale International, (formerly known as Rosedale Mennonite Missions) which served the Louisville community, assuming the role of CMC licensed/ordained pastor for 13 years. In his retirement years he was an active member of Mount Joy Mennonite Church, Goshen, Indiana
In 1975 he and his wife purchased a 50-acre retreat, “The Farm” in southern Indiana where he enjoyed spending time in nature experiencing many times of spiritual refreshment. It was also a place they welcomed their family and friends, hosting many retreats and outings
Friends may call Friday, January 28, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. There will also be one hour of calling Saturday, January 29, beginning at 12:30 p.m. prior to the 1:30 p.m. funeral service at Mount Joy Mennonite Church, 120 N. 23rd Street Goshen. Pastor Ben Shirk will officiate.
Burial will follow at Miller 8 Square Cemetery, Goshen.

Siegrist, E. Jane Witmer
July 10, 1937 - February 24, 2022
E. Jane Siegrist, 84, of Leola (formerly of Strasburg) peacefully entered her heavenly home on Thursday, February 24, 2022. She was the devoted wife of Elvin E. Siegrist for over 59 years until his passing in May 2017. Even through her recent 2 month health challenges, her mission and testimony was sharing Jesus with others.
Born in West Lampeter Township, she was the daughter of the late Frank A. and Minerva Kreider Witmer.
She was actively involved in the family business, Miller and Siegrist Auctioneers LLC for over 45 years.
She was a strong and faithful woman of God. She deeply loved her family and others and was a prayer warrior for all she knew. She was an active member of Stumptown Mennonite Church. She made the most of every day by inspiring and encouraging those around her. Jane enjoyed many things in life, her flower garden, mountain cabin, travel and reading. Her greatest enjoyment was time spent with her cherished family and friends from the oldest to the youngest.
She is survived by 3 daughters, Judy wife of Marlin Smoker of Strasburg, June wife of Jeff Hollinger of Leola, Rhonda wife of Bernard Nissley of Mount Joy; five grandsons, Todd (Jennifer) Smoker, Anthony (Brooke) Smoker, Eric (Leah) Hollinger, Chad (Vanessa) Hollinger and Justin Nissley; 7 great-grandchildren with two more on the way. She is survived by a brother Raymond (Shirley) Witmer and preceded in death by 6 siblings.
Funeral Services will be held at Stumptown Mennonite Church, 2813 Stumptown Road, Bird-In-Hand, PA on Monday, February 28 at 11 AM. Family and friends are invited to attend viewings at the church on Sunday from 6-8 PM and again on Monday from 10 AM until the time of service.

Slabach, Fred
September 29, 1922 - April 6, 2022
Fred Slabach, 99 ½ years, went to be with his Lord and Savior on April 6, 2022, in Oklahoma City, OK. He passed away in the hospital with family by his side. Fred was born September 29, 1922, in Midland, Michigan, to Joseph J. and Fannie M. (Miller) Slabach. He was the last living survivor of all his brothers, sisters, and their spouses. He grew up as the youngest of 10 children, spending his early years in Michigan, Illinois and then to Indiana where he lived the rest of his life. He met Lillian Riegsecker in the Middlebury, IN area and they married in 1946, celebrating 75 years together before she passed away May 25, 2021. Within a few years of their marriage, they purchased a farm north of Middlebury where they lived for 70 years, raising 6 children and caring for his elderly parents until their passing. He joined the Clinton Frame Mennonite Church as a young man and remained very active in the church for his entire life.
Fred was a tireless and dedicated farmer, always providing for his family despite the many difficulties of farming life. His farming ranged from raising crops to milking cows, hogs, and the various pet goats, sheep, rabbits, and horses for his children. He was an accomplished carpenter, and particularly enjoyed cabinet woodworking and making toys for his children, but also built and remodeled numerous buildings on the farm in addition to teaching his children carpentry. He kept bees and had an extensive orchard that he cared for and produced many bushels of fruit over the years for canning and freezing. He had a school bus route for many years and took many of the sports teams to different school events. He loved to travel and managed to take his young family on many trips over the years including to Chicago museums, zoos, aquarium, planetarium, Barnum and Baily Circus, and we all loved the annual Livestock and Rodeo show at the Coliseum. Other favorite trips to various locations in Michigan included Deerfield Park, Ford Motor Plant and Museum, Kellogg factory, etc. In addition, after the children were grown, he and his wife took numerous trips around the country visiting nearly every state. They traveled by car, train and air. He particularly enjoyed attending air shows and taking plane rides. When he was 98 years old, he had one of the highlights of his life to fly a small plane. He collected and restored John Deere tractors, participated in many parades and the Elkhart County Fair and belonged to the Northern Indiana Two Cylinder Club.
He enjoyed taking his many friends in the Amish community to their various appointments, events and shopping trips as an “Amish Taxi Driver” and continued to do so into his 90’s. In his spare time, he could be found doing any number of things such as reading a good book, playing board games with visiting family, putting puzzles together, fishing, feeding the wild birds and identifying what types came to the feeder. He was particularly fond of the Hummingbirds and the Bluebirds which came to his feeders year-round and nested in nearby boxes. He started quilting and made quilts for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Fannie, 7 brothers and their wives: Roman (Maymie), Daniel (Amelia or Millie), Abner (Barbara), William or Bill (Mary Edna), Albert (Nellie), Joseph or Joe (Betty), Irvin (Elma) and 2 sisters and their husbands, Amanda (Victor) Hochstetler and Mary Anne (Ira) Good, and a son, Daniel (Danny) Slabach.
He is survived by 5 children, Sharon (Keith) Bender of Oklahoma City, OK, Robert Slabach of Fountain Hills, AZ, Ruth Slabach of Brownsburg, IN, David (Ginger) Slabach of Norco, CA, Carol (Eldon) Thomas of Middlebury, IN. 9 grandchildren, Angela Bender Linzey (Jeremy), Karla Bender, Lynn Bender Jones (Scott), Sarah Slabach Webb (Nathan), Esther Slabach, Rachel Slabach Sanderson (Rich), Aaron Slabach, Lily Thomas, Seth Thomas, and 3 Step-Grandchildren, Donald Krause (Tiffanie), Nicole Krause, Kelly Krause Neal (Gary), 24 great- grandchildren, 5 step-great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great- grandchildren.
Visitation will be April 15th, 4-8 pm at Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, 1003 S. Main St., Middlebury. Visitation will also be from 10-11 am prior to funeral service at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 16th at Miller-Stewart Funeral Home. J. Leroy Slabach, age 87 of Nappanee, IN, passed away at 10:16am on Monday, May 16, 2022 at his residence after a sudden decline due to cancer. He was born on January 3, 1935 in Goshen, IN to Daniel and Amelia (Graber) Slabach.
Leroy grew up on his family’s farm in Goshen and then moved to the Nappanee area after marrying Marietta Hochstetler on October 6, 1956 at the North Main Street Mennonite Church in Nappanee. She preceded him in death on January 31, 2018. Leroy married his second wife, Judy Fisher, on February 2, 2020 at the Living Gospel Church in Nappanee. She preceded him in death on November 11, 2021.
Mr. Slabach was a long-time member at the North Main Street Mennonite Church before attending the Living Gospel Church later in life. He worked most of his life as a farmer and loved to work in his metal shop. He enjoyed restoring old garden tractors and especially liked to work on 2-cylinder John Deere tractors. Leroy was an active member of the Northern Indiana Johnny Poppers Club up until the time of his death.
Mr. Slabach is survived by his 4 children: Phil (Diane) Slabach of Nappanee, Brian Slabach of Goshen, Marcia (Steve) Hooley of Lagrange, IN, and Karen (Norman) Cender of Elkhart, IN; 10 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and 6 siblings: Martha Weirich of Goshen, Fannie (Richard) Melton of Goshen, Ruby Hochstedler of Goshen, Jean Mattison of Elkhart, Fran Bingaman of Elkhart, and Merv (Carol) Slabach of Goshen.
Leroy was preceded in death by his parents; 2 wives; and 2 siblings, Daniel Slabach Jr and Betty Miller.
Friends and family may call from 4-8 Friday, May 20, 2022 at Thompson-Lengacher and Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee and from 9-10am Saturday, May 21, 2022, also at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 10 am Saturday, with Pastor Jim Kintigh of the Living Gospel Church officiating. Burial will follow at Union Center Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Leroy’s name can be given to the Living Gospel Church Building Fund.
Smoker, Benjamin S.
February 27, 1950 - December 5, 2022
Benjamin S. Smoker, 72, longtime resident of Strasburg, passed away Monday, December 5, 2022 at the Cleveland Clinic surrounded by his loving family. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Samuel L. and Lydia K. (Stoltzfus) Smoker. He was the loving husband of Naomi (Stoltzfus) Smoker with whom they shared over 53 years of marriage together.
He worked for Lapp Lumber Company and most recently Hoober, Inc. where he retired in 2017. Ben was a man of faith and attended Sunnyside Mennonite Church, Pequea Church, and most recently was attending Grace Community Church in Willow Street.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Brenda (Mike) Malcolm of Strasburg, Cheryl (Bob) Arellano of Clarksburg, MD; two sons, Mike (Erin) Smoker of Lancaster and Kevin (Tricia) Smoker of Marietta. Also surviving are his beloved grandchildren; Makayla, Madison & Kate Malcolm; Nico Arellano; Megan, Lauren, and Liam Smoker; Levi and Elsie Smoker; and siblings, Amos Smoker, Rebecca King, Dan Smoker, Betty Blank and Mary Jane Riehl. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings Mervin Smoker and Verna Beiler.
Ben will be forever remembered for his unwavering love for his wife, children, and grandchildren. He took great joy in supporting his grandchildren at their concerts, recitals, and sporting events over the years. His faith was beautifully displayed through every interaction he had with friends, family, and co- workers. He will be greatly missed.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Cleveland Clinic for the exceptional care that was given to Ben during his time there. The family is forever grateful.
A Service Celebrating Ben's Life will be held at 3 PM on Saturday, December 10, 2022 at Strasburg Mennonite Church, 1514 Village Rd., Strasburg, PA 17579. Family and friends will be received from 1-3 PM at the church on Saturday. Interment will be private in Strasburg Mennonite Cemetery.
Smucker, Mary S. Petersheim
October 28, 1928 - April 3, 2022
Mary S. Smucker, 93, wife of the late Reuben G. Smucker, went home to be with the Lord peacefully April 3, 2022 with family by her bedside in Greeneville, TN. She was formerly of New Holland, PA, attended the Anchor of Hope church in Greeneville, TN and was the daughter of the late Jacob and Sally Petersheim.
She is survived by three sons, John (Ruth) Smucker of VA, Elmer (Anna) Smucker of OH, Reuben (Sue) Smucker of TN and 2 daughters, Sadie (Omar) Stoltzfus of TN, Lydia Ruth (Amos) Allgyer of PA. In addition to her children, she is survived by 40 grandchildren, 146 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren, one brother, Jake Petersheim, 2 sisters, Fannie Fisher and Amanda Lantz, 1 brother-in-law Amos Smoker, and 2 sisters-in-law, Betty Petersheim and Alta Petersheim.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Leah (Ben) Fisher, 3 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, two brothers, Andy and Elam Petersheim, and 1 sister, Lydia Smoker.
The viewing will be Friday, April 8, 2022 from 2:00-4:00 PM and 6:00-8:00 PM at West Haven Amish Mennonite church, 837 Peters Road, New Holland, PA.
