Weaver, William Melvin

William Melvin Weaver, 86, of Harrisonburg, Va., died March 13, 2016, in Oak Lea at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community. He was born Oct. 23, 1929, to Benjamin and Katie Horning Weaver near Fivepointville, Pa.

He married Viola W. Martin on Aug. 25, 1951.

He attended Lancaster Mennonite High School and Eastern Mennonite College. He served as pastor of South Seventh Street Mennonite Church, Reading, Pa., Rissers Mennonite Church, Elizabethtown, Pa., and Diller Mennonite Church, Newville, Pa. He taught music, Bible and shop at Conestoga Christian School, Ephrata Mennonite School and Gehmans Mennonite School. He was the founding pastor of Halifax Community Church and served as program director at Camp Hebron. Singing, gardening and the church brought him much joy in his life.

Survivors include his wife, Viola; four daughters, Priscilla Jutzi and her husband, Paul, of Reading, Pa., Aldine Musser and her husband, Jim, of Stephens City, Karen Weaver of Harrisonburg and Lucinda Swartzentruber and her husband, Ralph, of Keezletown; a son, Curt Weaver and his wife, Karin, of Portland, Ore.; two brothers, Marvin and Irvin Weaver; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia.

Memorial services were held at Bowmansville (Pa.) Mennonite Church and at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community.

Grasse, Anthony Meryl

A celebration of life service is planned for Dr. Anthony Meryl Grasse in Blooming Glen, Pa., at 2 p.m. June 18, 2016. The service will be held at Blooming Glen Mennonite Church, located at 713 Blooming Glen Road.

Anthony Meryl Grasse died Jan. 29, 2016, in Chambersburg at age 92. He was born May 16, 1923, to Anthony Myers Grasse and Lillian (Landis) Grasse in Chalfont.

He was an accomplished physician in family practice, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, dedicated to health-care service. He lived in Calico Rock, Ark., from 1952 to 2015. He retired from being a physician at the age of 88.

He grew up in Blooming Glen Mennonite Church. In July 1952, he married Gladys Landis at BGMC.

Soon after, the couple was commissioned by BGMC to serve in northern Arkansas. The Mennonites had set up a school and clinic in Culp, Ark., and were looking for a physician to serve in the area. In August 1952, they moved to Calico Rock. He and Gladys, with his brother, John L. Grasse and his wife, Mary Margaret, as a team effort, set up a medical clinic for outpatient care in Calico Rock in 1952. In 1959, he built the Medical Center of Calico Rock, which included a hospital and clinic. Several work teams from BGMC were involved in the construction of the hospital. In 1991, he and shareholders donated the hospital to the community, creating a nonprofit organization and renaming the hospital the Community Medical Center of Izard County. He was also active in the Mennonite church in Arkansas throughout his life and was a founding member of Calico Rock Mennonite Fellowship.

A memorial fund has been set up at the hospital that he established in Calico Rock. Proceeds from the fund will go toward the purchase of a Digital Mammography Imaging System, an essential item in the provision of basic health care for women. Donations may be sent to: Dr. A.
