He was born January 10 1917 at Nappanee to Lewis "Roy" Leroy and Pearl (Hochstetler) Strauss. Roy was born June 22, 1889 and died December 15, 1979. Pearl was born September 18, 1892 and died April 26, 1979.

On April 16, 1943 at Reedley, California Lyle was married to Blondine J. Jost, who was born September 18, 1919 and survives.

Surviving are children, Karen Strauss Nichols and Keith Jerel Strauss (Roberta), two grandchildren, and siblings, Lara (Glen) Honderich, Betty (Mearl) Weldy, Joan (Lawrence) Walsh, and Jane (Henry) Gehman.

Two sisters, Jean (Galen) Phillips and Dorthy (Ed) Johnson preceded him in death.

Memorial services were held March 18, 1983 at First Mennonite Church, Nappanee, Indiana with burial in Union Center Cemetery, Nappanee.
