Lauver, Nolan D.
June 15, 1996 - October 1, 1998
Nolan D. Lauver, 2, died of suffocation Thursday morning after a farm gate swung open, knocked him down and pinned him to the ground on his parents' farm in Southampton Township.
The toddler was pronounced dead at 11:56 a.m. at Chambersburg Hospital.
"He was lively, normal little boy," said Mark Rosenberry, minister of Antrim Mennonite Church, Greencastle, which the family attended. "We know he's with Jesus. We believe that."
Nolan was playing in the garden where his mother, Edith, was working. His father, Jason was working in a nearby field. Nolan wandered over to the barnyard, where he unlatched an 18-foot-high steel pipe gate, Conner said.
"The bottom rail of the gate came to rest on his chest," said Jeff Conner, Franklin County deputy coroner. "The gate moved up on his trachea when he tried to get out from under it."
His parents ran to the barnyard when they saw that the cows had gotten out.
Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the accident.
Nolan was the eighth of nine children. Two other siblings were at home when the accident happened.
Dr. Ellen Dugan of the Waynesboro Hospital pathology department performed the autopsy.
