Schmucker, Allen
– 1931-2000

Restaurateur was known for eatery his parents began

Allen Schmucker, who offered home-style food, and lots of it, at Reynolds Road restaurant that his parents founded, died of cancer Monday in his Springfield Township home. He was 68.

He was diagnosed with cancer 1 ½  years ago, but he continued to work at Schmucker's until early July, his son, Douglas said.

The elder Mr. Schmucker was 16 when his parents, Harvey and Nola, began the restaurant and established its reputation for meals and pies made from scratch. Early on, he cooked and worked the grill.

"He worked as a worker," Deborah Young, night manager, said.  That's where he got respect for employees. He did hands-on work [at the restaurant] his whole life.”

He became responsible for daily operations in about 1967. He passed those duties over to Doug the early to mid-1980s.

"From that point on, until a month or so ago, he handled all the office work, which he did by calculator. Only a calculator," his son said.

"That's what he knew, and that's what he enjoyed. He did payroll all by longhand.”

Bob Miller, a longtime friend and a certified public accountant, said: “Allen had a good business head on him.”

Mr. Schmucker developed a routine in those years: late-morning breakfasts at the restaurant spent greeting customers; a bite at three; the day’s banking afterward.

“Going to the bank every day wasn’t a job for him,” his son said.  “It was his time for social exchange.”

Harvey Schmucker believed if he gave people food at a quality price and made sure they didn't leave hungry; they'd be back. “My dad didn't want to lose that," Doug said.  As a result, the biggest change at Schmucker’s was the color of the decor, from red to blue, the son said.

Harvey Schmucker died in 1987, and Nola died in 1992.

Born in Toledo, Allen Schmucker grew up on Marriat Road near the future restaurant.  He was a graduate of the former Burnham High School in Sylvania.

Mr. Schmucker was a member of the Toledo Mennonite Church and taught Bible-study classes in his home for church members and anyone interested.

"He had a very deep faith," Mr. Miller said. As various trials and tribulations came to him, he relied heavily on his faith.  Consequently, he had the opportunity to really know that this was what really brought him through."

He and his wife, Alice, were married Sept. 7, 1952, and spent their honeymoon in Great Smoky Mountains National Park and visited it 59 times afterward.

Surviving are his wife, Alice; sons, Timothy and Douglas; daughter, Judith Christian; sisters, Elaine Cressman and Pat Hammer, and 10 grandchildren.

The body will be in the Toledo Mennonite Church from 4 to 8 p.m . today and from 2 to 8 p.m. tomorrow.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday in the church. Arrangements are by the Neville Mortuary; Reynolds Corners Chapel.

The family requests tributes to the church or Sunshine Children's Home.
