Mission pioneer served in Argentina, Chicago. A former mission
worker in Chicago and the daughter of Argentina mission pioneers died
Feb. 1, [2006] in the Arkansas Valley Regional Nursing Care Center in
La Junta, Colo.
Elsie Shank Castillo was born June 1, 1911, in La Junta to J.W. and
Emma Hershey Shank. With her family and T.K. and Mae Hershey, Castillo
moved to Argentina in 1917, where her parents served Mennonite Board of
Missions as pioneer mission workers.
She left Argentina to attend Goshen College from 1931-1934. Castillo
served MBM, a predecessor agency of Mennonite Mission Network, in 1935
at the Chicago Spanish Mission, where her father had started Spanish
services during a temporary North American assignment.
She returned to Argentina in 1936 until her marriage to David Castillo
July 25, 1938. Her husband was pastor at the Chicago Spanish Mission
and, according to Global Anabaptist Mennonite Encyclopedia Online, the
first Hispanic Mennonite pastor in North America. The couple served at
the Chicago Spanish Mission until they moved to La Junta, where her
husband pastored a Spanish Mission Church which later became Emmanuel
Mennonite Church. Castillo’s husband died June 7, 1986.
Surviving are a daughter, Anita Beadles of Emery, S.D.; two
grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law Joan Shank of
Montrose, Colo. Castillo taught elementary school for 23 years in
Colorado.

Sylvia I. Harder, 74, of Robbinsdale, MN, died January 05, 2006
at Robbinsdale, MN. She was born April 24, 1931 at Mountain Lake,
MN to Henry M. & Aganetha (Harder) Harder. On September 22,
1957 she was married to Kenneth Chaika, who is deceased.
Surviving are children, Cynthia (Dale) Roberts; Kenny (Mary) Chaika, 1
grandchild, and 3 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are siblings: Edna (Eldon) Andres; Marjorie (John)
Baerg; and Leroy (Marlene) Harder. Predeceased by a brother,
Henry A. Harder.
The funeral was held January 10, 2006 (when) at First Mennonite Church,
Mountain Lake, MN, with burial in the adjoining cemetery.
She was a member of Mennonite Church USA.

Ellen Christner,
65, of Battle Creek, Calhoun Co., Michigan died May 10, 2006 at Battle
Creek, Calhoun Co., Michigan of pulmonary fibrosis combined with
pneumonia. She was born May 13, 1940 at LaGrange County, Indiana
to Monroe & Edna (Hershberger) Christner. She was married to
Eldon Clare Christophel, who survives.
Also, surviving are children, Kevin Christophel, Yvonne Pizarro, and 9
grandchildren.
The funeral was held May 13, 2006 at Pine Grove Mennonite Church,
Battle Creek, Calhoun Co., Michigan.
She was a member of Mennonite Church USA.

M. Lucille, 88, of Goshen, IN died January 30, 2006 at Goshen,
IN of natural causes. She was born May 23, 1917 in Allen County, Ohio
to M. L. & Elizabeth (Good) Troyer. On May 25, 1940 she was
married to Warren Christophel, who survives.
Surviving are children, Janice (Kenneth) Langstaff , Joseph
Christophel, and 6 grandchildren.
A son, Hugh Christophel is deceased.
The funeral was held February 3, 2006 at Yellow Creek Mennonite Church,
Goshen, Indiana with burial in the adjoining cemetery.

ETNA GREEN -- Martha Sue Chupp, 4, of 8200 W. 640 N., died at 7:10 a.m. Wednesday (March 1, 2006) at home, after an extended illness.
She was born Dec. 22, 2001, in Warsaw, to Merle and Carolyn (Mast) Chupp.
They survive, along with four sisters, Susan, Laura, Doris and Julia Chupp, all at home; two brothers, Steven and Darrin Chupp, both at home; maternal grandparents Marvin and Sylvia Mast of Etna Green; and paternal grandparents Levi and Mary Chupp of Etna Green.
Friends may call after 2 p.m. today and all day Friday at the family home, 8200 W. 640 N. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Duane Schwartz residence, 6787 N. 800 W., with Bishop Walter Schwartz of Old Order Amish Church officiating. Burial will be in Graber Cemetery.

Millersburg, Indiana of congestive heart failure. She was
born November 1, 1936 at Holmes Mill, KY to Sampson & Nora (Kelly)
Parker. On October 7, 1954 she was married to Hubert Clark, who
survives.

failure. She was born June 30, 1912 to the late John and Lucille
(Demastus) Coffey.
Surviving are nieces and nephews. She was preceded in
death by siblings: John Coffey, Andy Coffey, Luther Coffey, Dellie
Coffey and Clint Coffey, Effie Demastus, Clatis Everette and Ida Brydge

Topeka, Indiana of liver failure. She was born April 2, 1934 at
Chicago, Illinois to John Catherine (Wiens, 1899-1984) Neufeld.
On June 24, 1956 she was married to Robert R. Coon, who survives.
Surviving are children, Russell and Kathryn Coon, Catherine and Maervin

Syracuse, Kosciusko Co., IN died January 11, 2006 at Syracuse, Indiana
of Glioblastoma Multiforme Brain Tumor. He was diagnosed June 5,
2005, underwent surgery on August 8, 2005, and went through
radiation and chemo in September and October of 2005. Died January 11,
2006 @ 1:20pm.
He was born February 24, 1953 at South Bend, Indiana to John
& Lois Mae Davis. On June 5, 1982 he was married to Shireen
DeeAnn Davis, who survives.
Surviving are his mother; children, Stephenie (Davis) Boesenberg age
22, Shaundra Davis age 18; and brothers and sisters, Tim Davis, Mike
Davis( wife Tammy), Mary (Davis) Rogers (husband Ned Rogers)
He was predeceased by his father and a brother, Marther Davis – died at
age 2 from a brain tumor.

at Hartville, Ohio as a result of cancer. He was born March 28,
1924 at Sebewaing, MI. On December 24, 1944 he was married to
Gertrude Maust, who survives.
Surviving are children, Jonathan & Violet Dutcher of Virginia; Ruth
& Ajay Massey of Columbus, Ohio; Dan & Barb Dutcher of
Hartville, Ohio; Naomi & Dan Leaman of Florida;

George W., 84, of Mifflintown RR2 (Centre), died at 9:37 a.m.
Tuesday, March 14, 2006, at the Lewistown Hospital.
Born April 9, 1921, in Port Royal, he was a son of the late Frank H.
and Myrtle (Paige) Eby. He is survived by his wife, A. Rebecca (Wirt)
Eby, whom he married on Aug. 3, 1945.
He is also survived by a daughter, Patricia J. Noll and husband
Clarence, of Millerstown, and a son, David F. Eby and wife Connie
L., of McAlisterville RR1; a brother, Robert J. Eby, of Reedsville;
four grandchildren; and one
great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Mary Smith.
He was a graduate of Port Royal High School. He was a retired
carpenter, having worked for the former Kenneth Leach Construction Co.
He was also a self-employed gunsmith. He was a member of the Centre
Lutheran Church.
The funeral will be conducted Saturday, March 18, at 11 a.m., at Rex
Funeral Home, Port Royal, by the Rev. Louise L. Reynolds. Interment
will be in Old Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal.
The viewing will be Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service
at Rex Funeral Home. There will be no evening viewing.

Naomi Babcock, 78, of Susanville, CA died November 21, 2006 at
Susanville, CA of Melanoma Cancer. She was born May 30, 1928 at
Midland, MI to Charles and Mattie (Brubacher) Babcock. Charles
was born April 17, 1903 and died September 27, 1967. Mattie was
born February 4, 1908 and died August 4, 1992.
On July 3, 1947 she was married to George S. Eby, who survives.
Surviving are children, Gloria (Steve) Robinson, Bonnie (Michael) Hull,
Mary Jo (Mark) Hirlbach, Clifford Eby, nine grandchildren, and 18
great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are brothers and sisters: Elsie-Bonnie (Clayton) Eby,

He was born May 27, 1944, to Glenn and Helen Eby. He married Joan Rago
in Cocoa, Fla, She survives.
He was employed by Brevard College and was looking forward to
retirement. He enjoyed fishing woodworking and spent many hours
building furniture and other wood creations.
He is survived by his father, Glean Eby; three sons Roger (Gay) Eby
Chris Eby and Darren (Christine) Eby, all of Elkhart; his sister,
Sharon Dull Edwardsburg, Mich,; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother Helen Eby.

Erb, D.
Wilbur, 89, of Harrisonburg, VA died November 6, 2006. He was
born to David Miller and Minnie (Witmer) Erb. He was married to
Lois Taylor, who is deceased.
Surviving are children, David T. Erb, James E. Erb, Paul S. Erb, Philip
R. Erb, Joyce E. Brunk, Merle C. Mast, Constance E. Madden, twelve
grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were held November 11, 2006 at Steelton Mennonite
Church, Steelton, PA.

Erb, D. Wilbur, 89, of
Harrisonburg, VA, died November 6, 2006 at Virginia Mennonite
Retirement Community (VMRC) in Harrisonburg. Mr. Erb was born in
Harrisburg, PA December 22, 1916 to David Miller and Minnie Witmer Erb.
He grew up in Harrisburg, PA and was the third generation on his family
farm on Cockley Road. Wilbur married the late Lois Taylor Erb of
Malvern, PA in 1938. She preceded him in death June 20, 2000. Lois and
Wilbur were active members of Steelton Mennonite Church from its
beginnings, and he served for more than forty years as its
congregational leader. He helped to establish Camp Hebron in Halifax,
PA, and was president of the board for the first 22 years. He and Lois
served in Australia with Eastern Mennonite Board of Missions from
1980-1983. He has been a resident at VMRC since 1991.
Survived by four sons, David T. Erb of New Holland, PA, James E. Erb of
Middletown, PA, Paul S. Erb of Stanhope, NJ, and Philip R. Erb of East
Berlin, PA; three daughters, Joyce E. Brunk of Harrisonburg, VA, Merle
C. Mast of Keezletown, VA, and Constance E. Madden of Middletown, PA;
twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Tribute to his life was November 11, 2006 at Steelton Mennonite Church,
Steelton, PA. Rev. Victor Romain officiating. Burial in Shopes
Mennonite Cemetery, Middletown, PA.

Robert “Bob” D., 79, of
Hesston, Harvey Co., KS died August 2, 2006 at Hesston, Harvey
Co., KS. He was born October 13, 1926 at Beaver Crossing, NE to
Mose & Ida (Schwietzer) Erb. On August 25, 1949 he was
married to Mary Troyer, who survives.
Surviving are children, Kathy Erb Whitcher, Jim Erb, Lori Erb Thimm,
and eight grandchildren.
Also surviving are one brother and four sisters: Merlin (Bernetta) Erb,
Dorothy Erb (Sam) Oswald, Norma Erb (Jim) Troyer, Gladys Erb Troyer,
and Wilma Erb Troyer.
He was predeceased by siblings: Alvin Erb, Virgil Erb, Elsie, Mary, and
Mattie.
The funeral was held August 7, 2006 at Hesston Mennonite Church,
Hesston, Harvey Co., KS.
He was a member of Mennonite Church USA.

Ruth Keim, 83, of Orrville, OH died August 1, 2006 at Columbus,
OH of congestive heart failure. She was born July 22, 1923 at
Shanesville, OH to Noah & Mary (Immel) Keim. On August 9,
1952 she was married to Sam J. Eshleman, who is deceased.
Surviving are children, Robert Eshleman, Carol Horst, Dean Eshleman,
Allen Eshleman, and
11 grandchildren.
Also surviving is a sister, Erma Landis.

Falk, Marie Schoen Grothaus,
98, of Mountain Lake, Cottonwood Co., MN died November 11, 2006 at
Mountain Lake, Cottonwood Co., MN of old age. She was born May
11, 1908 at Farwell, MN to Peter & Marie (Hackbarth)
Schoen. On April 4, 1985 she was married to Henry P. Falk, who is
deceased. She was first married to Wilbur C. Grothaus on February
27, 1935. He died on February 1, 1970.
Surviving is a son, Henry Grothaus (Kathy), two grandchildren, and
three great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by sisters, Elta Gunderson, Hazel Jessen, and Pearl
Sykora.
Memorial services were held November 16, 2006 at Good Samaritan
Village, Mountain Lake, Cottonwood Co., MN with burial in Mountain Lake
Cemetery, Mountain Lake, Cottonwood Co., MN.

J. Kenneth, 83, of
Chester Springs, PA died August 23, 2006 at Chester Springs, PA of
leukemia. He was born May 21, 1923 at La Junta , CO to Stephen
and Lavina (Hooley 03/26/1891 - 10/12/1977) Fisher. On May 8,
1986 he was married to Julia Heitman, who survives. Ken's first
wife, Della McClune, died in 1985.
Surviving are children, Joel K. Fisher; Larry A. Fisher and Gayle; and
eight grandchildren.
One daughter, Bonnie Rae Fisher had died previously.
Also surviving are brothers and sisters, Verda Byler of Gap, Helen Ours
of Harrisonburg,
Va., Harry L. Fisher of Willow Valley, Edwin Fisher of Shunk, Pa.,
Harold Fisher of Gap, and Vernon J. Fisher of Gap. He was
predeceased by siblings: Alvin Fisher, Ruth Hershey, Ralph Fisher,
Mabel Kennel, Grace Suter, and Lester Fisher.
The funeral was held August 26, 2006 at Frazer Mennonite Church,
Frazer, PA with burial in the adjoining cemetery.

92, of Newton, Kansas died July 16, 2006 at Newton, Kansas. She

born June 9, 1914 at Goessel, Kansas to Peter & Helen (Schroeder)
Woelk. On September 22, 1937 she was married to Walter W. Franz,

is deceased.
Surviving are children, Kenneth Franz, Bette Rhine, 4 grandchildren,

- A. Dale Frey, 87, of Pettisville, died early Saturday morning, July
1, 2006,
at the
Fulton
County Health Center
in Wauseon, where
he was admitted Sunday. He had resided at Fairlawn Haven in Archbold
since
January.
Born
Sept. 25, 1918, near Pettisville, to Anna (Rupp) and Aaron Frey, he
married
Mary (Eicher) Short on June 26, 1999, and she preceded him in death on
Sept. 4,
2002.
A
lifelong resident of the Pettisville/Archbold area, he farmed and did
custom
silo filling for area farmers. Since retirement, he worked at
Sauder Village.
He
was a charter member of the
Zion Mennonite
Church
in Archbold.
Surviving
are three sons, Gene Frey of Archbold, David Frey of
Minneapolis,
Minn.
and
Randall (and wife, Heidi) Frey of Chicago, Ill.; six grandchildren; 12
great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ada Schrock and Mrs. Charles
(Velma)
Kamp, both of Archbold.
He
was preceded in death by his parents; two wives; two sons, William
ÒBillÓ Dale
Frey and Steven Frey; three brothers, Aurelius Frey, Elias Frey and
Jesse Frey;
and six sisters, Agnes Schmucker, Violet Aeschliman, Mary Louise Frey,
Bertha
Stuckey, Grace Short and Ivah Beck.

will be held today from 2-8 p.m. in the Zion Fellowship Hall.

the late David & Fannie (Martin) Frey. On October 26, 1943 he
was married to Janet L. Frey, who survives.

Hawbaker, Wilmer Frey, 19 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.

Chambersburg, PA died March 6, 2006. He was born December 31, 1923, in
Chambersburg, PA to David and Fannie Martin Frey. He was married to
Janet L. Martin Frey, whom he married October 26, 1943
He was a member and deacon of the Chambersburg Mennonite Church and
Mennonite Central Committee. He was a founding member of CROSS and
Mennonite Economic Development Association.
He is survived by his wife, five children, Eugene R. Frey and wife
Hazel of Lancaster, PA; Linda Horst and husband John of Clear Spring,
MdD, Fern Diller and husband Eugene of Greencastle, PA; Miriam Hawbaker
and husband Wayne of Greencastle, PA and Wilmer L. Frey and wife Serita
of Deerfield, New Hampshire; 19 grandchildren; and 17
great-grandchildren. He is also survived by seven siblings, Irvin Frey
and wife Ida of Chambersburg, PA, Lista Martin and Catherine Martin,
both of Shippensburg, PA Miriam Horst and Melvin and Beulah Shank, all
of Chambersburg, PA Lois Martin and husband Ira of Hagerstown, MD and
Preston Frey and wife Lorraine of Chambersburg, PA, He was preceded in
death by a son, Robert L. Frey, on February 28, 1999.
Funeral services were held March 10, 2006, at Chambersburg Mennonite
Church, with Rev. Jerry Roth, Rev. Preston Frey and Rev. Earl Eby
officiating. Burial was in the adjoining church cemetery.
