Calhoun, Donald G.
, 70, of Gordonville, PA died July 28, 2008 at Manheim, PA.  He was born November 12, 1937 at Grapeville, VA to Virgil and Mary (Haga)  Calhoun.  On January 16, 1960 he was married to Janet L. Umble, who was born September 5, 1936 and survives.

Surviving are children, Hazel, wife of Martin Bennethum; Jeffrey, husband of Tammy Bell Calhoun; Michael T., 8 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild and siblings, Janet Dyck, Frances Rush, Douglas Calhoun, David Calhoun, Dennis Calhoun, Dale Calhoun, and Diane Primus.

His parents, one son, Donald Calhoun, a sister Margie Wiles, and a brother, Dean Calhoun preceded him in death.

Memorial services were held July 31, 2008 at Hershey Mennonite Church, Kinzers, PA with burial in Millwood Mennonite Cemetery, Gap, PA.

Christensen, Thomas Kent, 60 of Kalona, IA died Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, IA. He was born December 8, 1947 in Atlantic, Iowa to Svend Burge and Kathryn (Ross) Christensen. He was united in marriage to Sherry Britsch on September 15, 1984 at St Paul's Lutheran Church in Atlantic, IA. He was a member of the Upper Deer Creek Mennonite Church and he was also a Boy Scout leader.

Survivors include his wife Sherry of Kalona, son Erik Christensen of Kalona, daughter Desire Christensen and husband Robert Kaye of Iowa City, IA; brother, Ross Christensen and wife Pat of Waterloo, IA and sister Karla Smit of Atlantic, IA.

A Memorial Service was July 6, 2008 at the Upper Deer Creek Mennonite Church, Wellman, IA, with Pastor Elmer Miller officiating. Burial was at a later date.

Christy, Grace Katzenmoyer
, 83, of Lansdale, PA died August 4, 2008 at Lansdale, Montgomery Co., PA from congestive heart failure.  She was born August 21, 1924 at Reading, PA to Samuel and Ella Katzenmoyer.  On February 18 1959 she was married to Paul Wilson Christy, who was born July 12, 1915 and died June 2, 1993.

Surviving are two sons, Paul (and wife Nancy) and Howard (and wife Carol), 8 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.

His parents preceded her in death.

Memorial services were held August 7, 2008 at Plains Mennonite Church,  Hatfield, Montgomery Co., PA with burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Chupp, Edward Ray
, 89, of La Fontaine, IN died August 13, 2008 at La Fontaine, IN.  He was born June 24, 1919 at Emmatown, IN to Ira J. and Katie (Stutzman) Chupp.  On November 29, 1961 he was married to Ardith Marie Johnston, who was born August 30, 1922.

Surviving are his wife, two brothers,  Levi Chupp and Ira Chupp, and a sister Rosetta Miller.

Memorial services were held August 18, 2008 at North Main St. Mennonite Church, Nappanee, IN with burial in Milford Cemetery Milford, IN.

Chupp, Ervin Ray


Ervin Ray Chupp, 13, of rural Sullivan passed away at 7:40 a.m. Thursday, October 16, 2008, at his residence rural Arthur.

Funeral services were held Sunday morning at the family residence with Bishop William Otto officiating. Burial was in Yoder Cemetery. Visitation was anytime after 1 p.m. at the family residence. Edwards Funeral Home, Arcola, assisted the family with arrangements.

Ervin was born July 30, 1995, in Urbana. He was a son of Glen Ray and Betty (Miller) Chupp.

Survivors include his parents, Glen and Betty Chupp of Sullivan; six brothers, David Lynn, Phillip, Clifford, Lamar, Gerald, and LaVern; three sisters, Carol Sue, Lisa Fern, and Rose Ann, all at home; maternal grandmother, Susanna Miller; and paternal grandparents, Ervin and Elizabeth Chupp.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Ben S. Miller.

Ervin was an eighth grade student at West Side Parochial School in rural Sullivan.

His parents are members of the Old Order Amish.

Chupp, Wayne Ray,
61, of Nappanee, IN died May 23, 2008 at Nappanee, IN from cancer.  He was born November 27, 1946 at Bremen, IN to Ray E. and Ada M. Yoder Chupp.  On July 15, 1967 at Nappanee, IN he was married to Joan Stauffer, who survives.

Surviving are two sons, Eric (Marlis) Chupp, and Jeremy (Molly) Chupp, one  grandchild, two brothers, Merl (Carylin) Chupp, and Carlyle (Pearl) Chupp, and one sister, Shirley (Bob) Glenn.

His parents preceded him in death.

He was a member of Faith Riders Motorcycle Group.  He also spent one week a year for many years volunteering for MDS.

Memorial services were held May 27 2008 at North Main St. Mennonite Church, Nappanee, Indiana with burial in Union Center Cemetery, Elkhart County, Indiana.

He was a member of Mennonite Church USA.

Claassen, Gertrude  Claassen
, 84, of Beatrice, NE died September 15, 2008 at Beatrice from complications of a hip fracture and Parkinson's Disease.  

She was born October 31 1923 at Beatrice, Gage Co., NE to Henry Peter and Elisabeth (Thimm) Claassen. Henry Peter was born 09/23/1889 and died 01/16/1967.  Elisabeth was born 03/29/1889 and died 04/25/1986.

On February 2, 1945 at Beatrice she was married to Don Aron Claassen, who was born January 27, 1923 and survives.

Surviving are children, Barbara Kaufman and husband Richard; Kathryn Colwell Hill and husband Harold five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Two sisters, Frieda Claassen and Dorthy Goossen preceded her in death.

Memorial services were held September 20, 2008 at Beatrice Mennonite Church, Beatrice, NE with burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Clemens, James Rittenhouse
, 94, of Goshen, IN died January, 10, 2008 at Goshen, IN from a heart attack.  He was born June 2, 1913 at Lansdale, PA to Jacob C. and Hanna (Rittenhouse) Clemens.  On May 25, 1946 at Line Lexington, PA he was married to Eva Moyer, who was born May 5, 1918 and died January 31, 1987.

Surviving are children, James W. (Margaret) Clemens, Frederick P. Clemens, 3 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, and 6 step-great-grandchildren.

Three brothes, Ernest Clemens, Paul Clemens, Jacob Clemens, and two sisters, Ruth Clemens, and Betty Clemens preceded him in death.

He earned a Master of Library Science degree in 1950 from Columbia University,
moved to Goshen, and was librarian at Goshen College until his retirement
in 1980.  He was a member of College Mennonite Church where he served on
Commissions and taught Sunday School

Memorial services were held January 13, 2008 at College Mennonite Church, Goshen, Indiana with burial in Violett Cemetery, Goshen, IN.

Clemens, James Rittenhouse, 94, of Goshen, IN died January 10, 2008, at Greencroft Healthcare. He was born in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, on June 2, 1913, to Jacob C. and Hanna (Rittenhouse) Clemens. He married Eva Moyer on May 25, 1946, in Line Lexington, Pennsylvania. She preceded him in death on January 31, 1987. A member of College Mennonite Church, he served on commissions and as a Sunday school teacher. Mr. Clemens was a member of Goshen Community Chorale.

Survived by two sons, James William (Margaret Ann) Clemens and Frederick Paul Clemens, both of Goshen; two grandsons; one granddaughter; three step-granddaughter; and six, step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eva; three brothers, Ernest, Paul and Jacob Clemens; and two sisters, Ruth and Betty.

Funeral service will be conducted January 13, 2008, at College Mennonite Church. Pastors Klaudia Smucker and Betty Hochstetler will officiate. Burial was in Violett Cemetery, Goshen, IN

Clemens, Marcus A.
, 92, of Lansdale died October 2, 2008 at Lansdale, Montgomery Co., PA from a subdural hematoma.  He was born April 27, 1916 in Franconia Twp,, PA to Garrett A. and Elizabeth (Alderfer) Clemens.  

He was married first on June 12, 1937 to Helen Gotwals (June 12, 1917-July 15, 1981).  On January 14, 1984 at Souderton, Montgomery, PA he was married second to Phyllis Leidy, who was born July 2, 1917 and survives.

Surviving are children, Donald and wife Marie; Orrie and wife Terri; Leanne Wentorf and husband Dale; Jane Landes and husband Henry; Carolyn Bontrager and husband Philip; Richard and wife Jane; 14 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and a sister, Ada Hackman, Alberta Canada.

A brother, Floyd Clemens and a sister, Ruth Musselman preceded him in death.

Among the many activities of his life were:

--founding member of Penn Foundation for Mental Health, and president of Franconia Mission Board during the 1950's.

Memorial services were held October 5, 2008 at Plains Mennonite Church, Hatfield, Montgomery Co., PA with burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Clemens, Marcus Alderfer, 92, of Lansdale, PA died there on October 2, 2008.  He was born April 27, 1916 at Franconia, Montgomery Co., PA to Garrett A. and Elizabeth A. (Alderfer) Clemens.  Garrett was born November 18, 1881 and died October 19, 1921.  Elizabeth was born October 3, 1880 and died February 27, 1932.

On June 12, 1937 at Souderton, PA he was married to Helen Schueck Gotwals, who was born June 12, 1917 and died July 12, 1981.

Surviving are his second wife Phyllis, of Dock Woods Community,
Lansdale, PA; children, Donald Clemens & wife, Marie; Orrie Clemens & wife, Therese; Leanne Wentorf & husband, Dale; Jane Landes & husband, Henry; Carolyn Bontrager & husband, Philip; Richard Clemens & wife, Jane; 14 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.

Our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Marcus A. Clemens, 92, of Dock Woods Community, Lansdale, Pennsylvania, passed away on October 2, 2008. He was born to Garrett A. and Elizabeth (Alderfer) Clemens in Franconia Township on April 27, 1916.

Marcus graduated from Souderton High School and Pierce College of Business Administration in Philadelphia. He married the late Helen Gotwals in 1937.

Marcus had a long and notable career, starting in the Trust Department of Union National Bank. He served in Civilian Public Service from 1945-1947, initially in CPS Camp in Luray, Virginia and later at the National Service Board for Religious Objectors in Washington, D.C. He founded and was President of the Ridge Hosiery Company in Quakertown, Pennsylvania. He served as General Manager and Secretary of Horace W. Longacre Inc., Franconia Pennsylvania. Marcus was Vice President and Controller of Granite Hosiery Mills, Souderton. He was deeply involved in nursing and retirement home administration at Menno Haven in Chambersburg, Elm Terrace in Lansdale and at Dock Woods Community, where he was also a board member.

His lifelong advocacy for Christian education was evidenced by his participation as a founding member of Quakertown Christian and Penn View Christian Schools. Christopher Dock Mennonite High School honored him for his work on a study that resulted in the creation of the school.

He was both a founding member and President of Penn Foundation for Mental Health in Sellersville. In the 1950's, Marcus served as President of the Franconia Mission Board, which included trips to Cuba and Mexico to gather information for future missions.

He was an active, lifelong member of the Mennonite Church holding memberships at Franconia Mennonite Church, Rocky Ridge Mennonite Church, and Plains Mennonite Church.

Marcus is survived by his wife, Phyllis, of Dock Woods Community; his sister, Ada Hackman of Alberta, Canada; three sons and three daughters, Donald Clemens and his wife Marie of Goshen, Indiana; Orrie Clemens and his wife Terri of Fort Collins, Colorado; Leanne Wentorf and her husband Dale of Goshen, Indiana; Jane Landes and her husband Henry of Sellersville, Pennsylvania; Carolyn Bontrager and her husband Philip of Berrien Springs, Michigan; Richard Clemens and his wife Jane of Harrisonburg, Virginia; fourteen grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his 15` wife Helen (Gotwals) Clemens, a brother Floyd Clemens, and a sister, Ruth Musselman.

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing Saturday, October 4 from 4-6 p.m. in the Huff and Lakjer Funeral Home, 701 Derstine Avenue, Lansdale. An additional viewing will be held Sunday, October 5 from 1-2:30 p.m. in Plains Mennonite Church, 50 Orvilla Road, Hatfield, followed by a service at 2:30 p.m. Interment adjoining cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions

Clemmer, Edna L. Landis
, 83, of Souderton, PA died January 12, 2008 at Sellersville, Bucks Co., PA.  She was born February 12, 1924 and was married to Jonas Clemmer, who is deceased.

Surviving are children, Sharon Landis (David); Donna Martin (Darrel); Ronald Clemmer (Susan); Jane Plessinger (Duane); and Luann Miller (Peter).

Memorial services were held January 15, 2008 at Souderton Mennonite Homes,  Souderton, Montgomery County, PA with burial in Salford Mennonite Cemetery,  Harleysville, Montgomery County, PA.

She was a member of Mennonite Church USA.

Clemmer, Roy C.
, 87, of Souderton died October 2, 2008 at Souderton, PA.  He was born at Souderton, PA to Willis and Laura (Cassel) Clemmer.  On May 11, 1943 he was married to Jean D. Godshall.

Surviving are children, R. Jonathan and Betty Clemmer; Justine Pletcher and Ken;
Lisa Yoder and Gary; Robert and Marilyn Clemmer; Janice Kauffman and Roland;
13 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.

He served on the board of the Mennonite Diaster Service for 40 years and was an active member of Gideons International.

Conrad, Paul L.
, 89, of Goshen, IN died July 17, 2008 at Goshen, Elkhart Co., IN. He was born September 23, 1918 at Portland, OR to Lester and Mabel (Geiger) Conrad.  On January 24, 1946 at Nazareth, Ethiopia he was married to Nancy Hernley, who was born March 18, 1919 and survives.

Surviving are children, Glenn (Margaret Derstine) Conrad, Mary (Matthew) Conrad Lo, Paul (Martha Liechty) Conrad II, and six grandchildren.

A son, John Conrad, a sister, Myrtle Ruth Conrad, and two brothers, Clifford Conrad and Glenn Conrad preceded him in death.

Paul was a physician, a medical and surgical missionary to Ethiopia and India, a medical school professor, and a clinical psychiatrist.  Paul and Nancy served with Mennonite Board of Missions in Nazareth, Ethiopia and Dhamtari Christian Hospital, MP, India.  Paul was an active member of the Mennonite Medical Assn., the American Psychiatric Assn., and the American Medical Assn.

Memorial services were held July 20, 2008 at College Mennonite Church, Goshen, IN.

Cordell, Mary K. Appleby
, 89, of Marion, PA died April 5, 2008 at Chambersburg, PA.  She was born August 27, 1918 at Barberton, Ohio to James A. and Georgia (Hollinger) Appleby.  On July 3, 1940 at Chambersburg,
PA, she was married to Glenn  A. Cordell, who was born May 22, 1919 and survives.

Surviving are two sons, Glenn R. Cordell and Leonard A. Cordell, 6 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were held April 9, 2008 at Marion Mennonite Church, Chambersburg, PA with burial in the adjoining cemetery.

She was a member of Mennonite Church USA.

Cowerd, Robert J
., 82 years, 8 months, of Glendale, AZ died April 19, 2008 at Glendale, Maricopa, Co., AZ. 

He was born August 20, 1925 at Larchmont, NY to Alexander Pleasants Holly Cowerd and Dorothy Elizabeth Davis Greene.  Dorothy was born August 17, 1889 and died January 13, 1974.

On March 9, 1968 at Glendale, AZ he was married to Ardis B. Kennel, who was born April 29, 1927 and survives.

Surviving are a son, Jonathan (Lisa) Cowerd, and three grandchildren.

One sibling preceded him in death.

Memorial services were held April 25, 2008 at Trinity Mennonite Church, Glendale, AZ with burial in Phoenix Memorial Gardens, Glendale, AZ.

Crane, Pistal
, 23, of Inola, OK  died March 28, 2008 at Tulsa, OK  in an industrial accident.  He was born August 26 1984 at Tulsa, OK  to Pete and Annette Crane.  On May 11, 2002 at Tiawah, OK he was married to Rachel Janz.

Surviving are his wife, a son, Gage a daughter, Jada and his parents.

Memorial services were held April 1, 2008 at Eden Mennonite Church, Inola, Oklahoma with burial in Sweeten Cemetery, Inola, OK.

Crapo, Martha Graber
, 80, of Middlebury, Indiana died March 23, 2008 at Goshen, Indiana.  She was born March 23, 1928 at Arthur, Illinois to Abe and Katie (Marner) Graber.  On May 28 1966 she was married to Burton E. Crapo, who died January 13, 1995.

Surviving are children, William Crapo, Robert (Melissa Perry) Crapo; Stepsons: Edward Crapo, and Ronald Crapo, one grandson, two step-grandchildren, and two brothers, Joe (Dora) Graber, and John (Annie) Graber.

A brother, George Graber preceded her in death.

Martha had worked at Keene Machine, Middlebury, and later did babysitting in her home.  She then worked 20 years for E. R. Carpenter in Elkhart.  She was a member of First Mennonite Church, Middlebury, where she was very active in the First Mennonite Women's Group.

Memorial services were held March 27, 2008 at First Mennonite Church, Middlebury, Indiana with burial in Grace Lawn Cemetery, Middlebury, Indiana.

, 92, died February 6, 2008 at Goshen, Elkhart County, Indiana.  She was born April 11, 1915 to Henry H. and Mary (Defreese) Cripe. 

Memorial services were held May 10, 2008 at Eighth Street Mennonite Church, Goshen, Elkhart County, Indiana.

Crist, Harold D.
   

Harold D. Crist, 85, of Tuscola passed away at 11:10. a.m. on Sunday, July 13, 2008, at Tuscola Health care Center in Tuscola.

A funeral service celebrating his life was held at noon yesterday (Wednesday) at Maus Family Funeral Home, 400 S. Main Street in Tuscola. Burial with full military rites was in Mackville Cemetery in Atwood. Visitation was held two hours prior to the funeral.

Mr. Crist was born October 15, 1922, in Decatur. He was a son of Raymond E. and Wavadel (Schoonover) Crist. He married Thelma (Quillen) Cornwell on June 6, 1964, in Hume. She survives.

Also surviving are four children, Lance Lorenz of McDonough, Georgia, John Cornwell and wife Pam or Arthur, Tom Crist and wife Franki of Monticello, and Marti Thomas and husband Derrick of Wesley Chapel, Florida; one brother, Bill Crist and wife Wanda of Decatur; one sister, Dorothy Morris and husband Jim of McKenzie, Tennessee; seven grandchildren, Ryan, Kevin, Chelsea, Josh, Spencer, Elizabeth, and Derrick Jr.; one great-grandchild, Cameron; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Raymond Crist; and one sister, Norma Anderson.

Mr. Crist was a veteran of the United States Army Medical Corps having served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre during World War II. During his service he was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon, the American Theatre Ribbon, two Overseas Bars, the Victory Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal, the Meritorious Service Unit Plaque, and two Stars.

He attended Atwood schools. He was a lifetime member of the VFW in Tuscola. He was a truck driver having retired from full-time work in 1993. He enjoyed fishing and bowling and cherished his family. He will be dearly missed.

95, of Aberdeen, Idaho died May 13, 2008 at American Falls, Idaho from age and natural causes.  He was born February 5, 1917 at Vinita, Oklahoma to Henry and Anna (Mathies) Dalke.  On June 15, 1934 at American Falls, Idaho he was married to Helen Brucks.

Surviving are children, Delon, Karen Dirks, Nancy Clark four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were held May 19, 2008 at First Mennonite Church, Aberdeen, Idaho with burial in Homestead Cemetery, Aberdeen, Idaho.

(Dr.), 62, of Goshen died September 11, 2008 at Goshen, Elkhart Co., from cancer.  She was born August 9, 1946 at Hollywood, California to Ralph and Naomi (Blough) Holderman.  On October 14, 1972 in Elkhart County, IN she was married to Ronald E. Davidhizar, who survives.

Also urviving are a stepsister, Cindy Mullet and an adopted brother, James (Mary ann) Holderman.

Delp, Robert W., 81, of Sellersville, PA died March 19, 2008 at Doylestown, PA.  He was born September 23, 1926 to Ephriam and Grace (Wismer) Delp.  On August 12 1967 he was married to Gloria Stover, who was born December 29, 1928 and survives. 

Surviving are children, R. Michael & wife Bernice, Randy & wife Kathleen, Jeffery & wife Sun, 6 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Alderfer, and Grace Landis.

His first wife, Myrtle Smith Delp, a grandson, Jason, and a brother, Harold Delp preceded him in death.

Memorial services were held March 25, 2008 at Blooming Glen Mennonite Church, Blooming Glen, PA with burial in St. Andrews Union Cemetery, Perkasie, Bucks Co., PA.

, 82, of Denver, PA died October 3, 2008 at Ephrata Community Hospital. She was born in Quakertown, PA to Abram and Laura (Stoudt) Yoder. She married to Stanley M. Derstine he died  in January 1995. 

A member of Spring Mount Mennonite Church, Schwenksville, PA and attended Millport Mennonite Church. Leola, PA.

Survived by her children, Beverly, wife of Harry Wenger of Stevens, PA; Brenda Derstine of Denver, PA; Bruce, husband of Janet Derstine of Telford, PA; Blaine Derstine, husband of Rebecca Burkholder of Lancaster. PA; three brothers, Donald Yoder of Soudertown,PA Daniel, husband of Betty Yoder of Lansdale, PA and Herbert Yoder of South Perkasie, PA; three sisters, Miriam, wife of William Anders; Esther Moyer and Gladys, wife of Lloyd Allebach all of Telford, PA; grandchildren, Krista Wenger Lehman, Matthew Wenger, Karen Mast, Stephanie Derstine, Philip Derstine, Elizabeth Derstine, Caleb Derstine, and 6 great-grandchildren.

, 89, of Perkasie died June 26, 2008 at Allentown, PA.  He was born September 18, 1918 at Bedminster Township, PA to Clayton R. and Alice (Wismer) Detwiler.  On February 10, 2001 at Perkasie, Bucks County, PA he was married to Mary Emma Gahman.

Surviving are children, Betty Bergy (Ken), Telford; Garry Detweiler (Rhoda), Perkasie; Mary Navarre (Roy), Hilltown; Ray Detweiler (Debbie), Perkasie; Darlene Heacock (Jeffrey), Perkasie; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and his siblings, Emma Mae Landis, Ruth Gahman, Cora Longacre, Mari-An Nyce, Chester, Elmer, Raymond and Arthur Detweiler.

His first wife, Ella (Moyer) Detweiler and three brothers, Lloyd Detweiler, Claude Detweiler, and Clayton Jr. Detweiler preceded him in death.

Memorial services were held June 30, 2008 at Run Mennonite Church East, Perkasie, Bucks County, PA with burial in the adjoining cemetery.

, 94, of Canton, Kansas died February 17, 2008 Goessel, KS from old age.  She was born October 11, 1913 at Butler Co. KS.  She was married to Charles L Diener, who is deceased.

Surviving are children, Ida and Roderick Huebert, Ruby and Gary Moore, Daniel and Christine Diener, Gladys and David King, 8 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.

Diener, Mary Beachey


Mary Diener, 88 of White Pigeon, Michigan, formerly of Arthur, passed away at 8:30 a.m. Sun, February 3, 2008, at Heartland Home, in Three Rivers, Michigan.

Visitation was 6 to 8 p.m. yesterday (Wednesday) at Sunnyside Mennonite Church in rural Arcola. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. today (Thursday) at the church. Burial will be in Sunnyside Mennonite Church Cemetery. Edwards Funeral Home is assisting the family with local arrangements.

Mrs. Diener was born April 8, 1919, Arthur. She was a daughter of the late Joel and Lizzie (Gingerich) Beachey. She married Henry Diener on December 23. 1937, in Arthur. He survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Anna Louise Yoder and husband Paul of Harrisonburg, Virginia, Verna Townsend of San Jose, California, and Mary Eileen Sutter and husband Jim of Clarksville, Michigan; three sons, Eugene Diener and wife Gloria of Harrisonburg, Jerry Lee Diener of Harrisonburg, and Ron Diener and wife Marylyn of Austin, Texas; four sisters, Fannie Mast, Lovina Beachy, Clara Schrock, and Lizzie Ann Miller, all of Arthur; two brothers, Louis Beachey and wife Dorothy of Decatur and Elmer Beachey of Mahomet; and 12 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a great-grandson; three sisters, Sarah Schrock, Verna Kauffman, and Katie Stutzman; and two brothers, Alvin and Jake Beachey.

Mrs. Diener was a member of the Riverview Mennonite Church. She enjoyed sewing and quilting.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Golden Rod in Middlebury or Pleasant View Homes in Harrisonburg.

, 86, of Landis Homes, Lititz, PA formerly of Manheim, died Tuesday, October 28, 2008. He was the son of the late Harry L. and Erna Nolt Diffenderfer. He was a member of the Erb Mennonite Church, Lititz, PA.

Survived by a sister, Minerva married to Roy Ulrich of Lititz; a brother, Melvin married to Elizabeth Shirk Diffenderfer of Lancaster; five nephews and six nieces.

Driver, Rachel Anna
, 80, of Denver, Colorado died February 1, 2008 at Goshen, Elkhart County, Indiana from a stroke.  She was born August 19, 1927 at Newton, Kansas to Daniel Demuth and Cora Jeanette (Schrock) Driver.  On July 7 1979 she was married to Edgar Anthony Marshall, who was born October 31, 1923 and died July 30, 2005.

Surviving are three brothers, John H. Driver (Bonny); Donald R. Driver; and Vincent E. Driver (Anne).

Rachel was one of only four women, out of 105 students, to graduate from medical school (Univ. of Kansas) in 1957. Rachel worked as a doctor specializing in chest diseases in children until her retirement, after which she continued to work on a voluntary basis in Pediatric Tuberculosis until 1994. She was chosen as Volunteer Physician of the Year in 1994 by the Medical Staff of Denver Health and Hospitals.

Memorial services were held February 15, 2008(when) at First Mennonite Church Denver/Denver Colorado (where) with burial in First Mennonite Church Memorial Garden Denver, Colorado

Dyck, Martha Harder Suderman
, 98, of Normal, IL died February 8, 2008 at Normal, McLean County, IL from congestive heart failure and stroke.  She was born July 3, 1909 at rural Whitewater, KS to G. A. and Anna (Wiebe) Harder. 

In 1934 she was married to L. Paul Suderman, who died in 1937.  She then married on July 14, 1950 at Whitewater, KS, Rev. Walter H. (Henry) Dyck who was born September 16, 1908 and died May 16, 1996.

Surviving are children, Delores Ann (Suderman) Bartel (Marvin Bartel); Elvera
    (Peters) Suderman; 13 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.

A son, Charles Paul Suderman died in 1984.

Memorial services were held February 16, 2008 at Mennonite Church of Normal, Normal, Illinois with burial in Ropp Mennonite Cemetery, Normal, McLean County, Illinois.

Eash, Maynard Leroy
, 78, of Wellman, IA died August 9, 2008 at Iowa City, IA.  He was born June 7, 1930 at rural Wellman, IA to Amelius and Dorothy (Rensberger) Eash.  On November 29, 1953 at Wayland, IA he was married to Elaine Roth, who is deceased. After Elaine's death, Maynard was married to Ada Mae Swartzendruber Yoder on Jan. 13, 1990. Ada Mae survives Maynard.

Surviving are children, Randall and Barb Eash; Rita and Lowell Peachey; Ruby and Chris Kern; stepchildren, Roberta and Ernie Kandel; Suzanne and Mike Moser; Karla and Jorge Mabarak; Kevin and Lori Yoder; 6 grandchildren, 5 step grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, and two sisters, Betty Jean Essex; Virginia Roth.

His parents, his brother, Lamonte Eash, and a grandson, Brandon Eash on 11/4/1999 preceded him in death.

Maynard was a farmer and an accomplished finish carpenter. He was a life long member of the West Union Mennonite Church where he served on numerous committees. He also was a member of the Johnson County Cattlemen's Association, a 4H leader, a Farm Bureau member, had served on the Washington Township School board, and was a member of the Jollyman's Club. Maynard had many interests, which included playing cards with friends, woodworking, traveling and attending grandchildren's athletic events.

Memorial services were held August 12, 2008 at West Union Mennonite Church, Parnell, IA with burial in West Union Mennonite Cemetery, Parnell, IA.

Eash, Maynard Leroy, 78, of Wellman, IA. Died August 9, 2008 at Mercy Hospital. He was born near Wellman in Johnson County, IA. to Amelius and Dorothy Rensberger Eash. Maynard attend rural school and later enlisted in the Marine Corp. Maynard and Elaine Roth were united in marriage Nov. 29, 1953 at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church, Wayland. After Elaine's death he was married to Ada Mae Swartzendruber Yoder on January 13, 1990. Also surviving are stepchildren, Roberta and Ernie Kandel, Suzanne and Mike Moser, Karla and Jorge Mabarak, Kevin and Lori Yoder, step grandchildren, Nicole Kandelind, Mackenzie Moser, Aisha and Stefan Mabarak, Hanna Mc Dowell, and Drew Yoder, one sister Betty Jean Essex and a sister-in-law Virginia Roth.

Maynard was preceded by his parents, 1st wife, Elaine (12/29/1988) grandson, Brandon Eash (11/4/1999) and a brother Lamonte.

Eshleman, Arlene Heatwole, 98, of Elkhart, IN, died Wednesday, October 1, 2008, at Hubbard Hill Estates. She was born December 7, 1909 in Rockingham County, Virginia to Amos and Sally (Johnson) Heatwole. She married Harold G. Eshleman on June 28, 1933. He died February 27, 1998. She was a member of the Harrisonburg Mennonite Church in Virginia. Mrs. Eshelman served as church secretary and home office manager for her husband, a Mennonite minister. She hosted countless visitors including refugees from Cuba, Laos and Palestine.

She is survived by a daughter, Ruth (Devon) Sherman Schrock of Goshen; two sons, J. Robert (Rosalie) Eshleman of Midlothian, Virginia, and Kenneth (Myrna) Eshleman of Mechanisburg, Pennsylvania; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Nellie Early and Dorothy Smith, both of Harrisonburg, Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; a grandson, Lee Eshleman in 2007; four sisters, Cleda Keller, Zelda Rohrer, Nina Layman and Ethel Good; and a brother, Herman Heatwole.

A memorial service was October 18, 2008, at the Harrisonburg Mennonite Church, Harrisonburg, VA. Burial was in Weavers Mennonite Church Cemetery, Harrisonburg, Virginia.

, 90, formerly of East Petersburg, PA died December 27, 2008 at the Mennonite Home, Lancaster, PA. She was born in Strasburg, PA to George and Emma Keener Harnish. She was the wife of J. Robert Eshleman who died in December of 2007.

She was a member of Chestnut Hill Mennonite Church, Columbia, PA. Surviving is a son, Leon husband of Melba Horst Eshleman of Manheim, PA; a daughter, Doris E. Eshleman of Lancaster, PA; five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, a sister, Dorothy wife of Earl Meck of Manheim, PA; a brother, Paul husband of Ann Harnish of Washington Boro, PA. Mary was preceded in death by a sister, Mabel Huber, and four brothers: Amos, Roy, John, and Robert Harnish. Funeral service was January 3, 2009 at the Chestnut Hill Mennonite Church with Pastor Steven Heatwole officiating. Interment in Landisville Mennonite Cemetery, Landisville, PA.

, 56, of Elizabethtown, PA died November 23, 2008. He was born in Lancaster, PA to Walter D., Sr. and Mary Gantz Espenshade.

He was married to Cheryl R. Goodling Espenshade for 35 years. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Jill, wife of Corey Sine, Maytown, PA; Jessie, wife of Howard DeShong, Mount Joy, PA; and a sister, Nancy Espenshade, Lancaster, PA.

Estep, Beulah Ruth Sonifrank

FULKS RUN - Beulah Ruth Estep, 82, went to be with Jesus Monday, Nov. 24, 2008.

Mrs. Estep was born Feb. 13, 1926, in Peru, Wv., and was a daughter of the late George Daniel and Clara Crider Sonifrank.

She was a homemaker, and had worked at Pleasant View Homes for 26 years. She was a member of Bethel Mennonite Church near Broadway. On Sept. 2, 1943, she married Thomas Franklin Estep, who preceded her in death Sept. 9, 1977.

Surviving are three sons, Stephen Estep and wife, Nola, of Fulks Run, Dennis Estep and wife, Marlene, of Zurich, Ontario, Alvin Estep and wife, Bettie Ann, of Fulks Run; two daughters, Thelma Showalter of Broadway, Esther Schrock and husband, Arland, of New Market; two brothers, Linden Sonifrank of Dayton, David Sonifrank of Singers Glen; five sisters, Arlene Miller of Fulks Run, Loretta Horst of Weyers Cave, Lillie Lahman of Harrisonburg, Nona Kulp of Wakarusa, In., Janet Thompson of Harrisonburg; 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Lowell Showalter; brothers, Clifton and Nolan Sonifrank; sisters, Oma and Carolyn Sonifrank; a half brother, William Sonifrank.

The Revs. Arland Schrock and Millard Sonifrank conducted a funeral service Saturday, Nov. 29 at Bethel Mennonite Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Evers, Annagene Mae Miller
, 76, of Wauseon, Ohio died September 30, 2008 at Toledo, Lucas Co., Ohio.  She was born May 26, 1932 at Wauseon, Fulton Co., Ohio  to Gideon and Lena (Nofziger) Miller.  On January 25, 1958 at Wauseon she was married to Melvin Lee Evers, who was born July 17, 1936 survives.

Surviving are children, Tabb (Cindy), Troy, Tammy (Steven) Peters, 10 grandchildren, and a brother, Cletus Miller.

Four brothers, Lester Miller, John Miller, Lewis Miller, and Mahlon Miller, and two sisters, Tena Short and Rosella Nofziger preceded her in death.

She was a charter member of North Clinton Mennonite Church.

Memorial services were held October 4, 2008 at North Clinton Mennonite Church, Wauseon, Fulton Co., Ohio with burial in Pettisville Cemetery, Pettisville, Fulton Co., Ohio.

Ewy Christine Helen Ortman
, 88, of Jetmore died October 21, 2008 at Ness City, KS.  She was born September 28, 1920 at Moundridge, KS to Fredrick and Christina (Brubacher) Ortman.  On January 21, 1951 at Moundridge, KS she was married to Weldon L. Ewy, who survives.

Surviving are children, Douglas and Barbara Ewy, Barbara Gibbs, 2 grandchildren, a brother, Albert Ortman and a sister, Leah Toevs.

Three brothers, Harold, Edward and Roland and three sisters, Emma Lohrentz, Esther Wedel and Ruth Miller preceded her in death.

Memorial services were held October 25, 2008 at Hanston Mennonite Church, Hanston, Hodgeman Co., KS with burial in the adjoining cemetery.

A member of Strasburg Mennonite Church, Strasburg, PA. Survived by her daughter, 3 stepchildren, a grandson, 13 step-grandchildren, and 6 siblings. She was preceded in death by 2 stepchildren and 3 sisters. Memorial service was June 19, 2008 at Strasburg Mennonite Church with interment in Strasburg Mennonite Cemetery, Strasburg, PA.

, 50, of South Bend, IN died November 22, 2008 at South Bend, IN from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.  

He was born April 5, 1958 at Iowa City, IA to Robert David and Rachel (Swartzendruber) Fisher.  Robert was born November 25, 1918 and Rachel was born September 15, 1920.

Surviving are his parents, a son, Matthew Fisher, a brother, David (Joyce) Fisher, and two sisters, Julie (Ray) Profeto, and Suzette Fisher.
He was married for a short time, then divorced.

Memorial services were held November 26, 2008 at College Mennonite Church, Goshen, IN with burial in Elkhart Prairie Cemetery, Goshen, IN.

Folk, Ferne Lucille King
, 86, of Springs died June 18, 2008 at Meyersdale, Somerset County, Pennsylvania.  She was born July 10, 1921 at Springs, Somerset County, Pennsylvania to Daniel H. and Mary M. (Hollada) King. She was married to Dwight O. Folk.

Surviving are a son, D. Ronald Folk and wife Dotty; a son, Richard A. Folk; a daughter, Linda F. Hardesty and husband Guy Wayne; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, a brother, James R. King with wife Marilyn; and a sister, Anna Bertha Beachy.

A sister, Helen Boslow preceded her in death.

She was a lunch counter manager for Yoder's Inc., a member of Springs Mennonite Church and Daughter of Dorcas.

Memorial services were held June 20, 2008 at Newman's Funeral Home, Grantsville, Garrett County, Maryland with burial in Springs Cemetery, Springs, Pennsylvanis.

Franz, Earl R.
, 92, of Reedley, CA died September 5, 2008 at Reedley, CA.  He was born August 10, 1916 at Mead, Kansas to John and Lena Franz.  On December 10, 1972 at Reedley, CA he was married to Bernice Borthwick, who survives. His first marriage was to Estella Fast (31 years).

Surviving are children, Carolyn (Ken) Peters, Darryl (Nancy) Franz, Bonnie Runjavac (step-daughter), 5 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were held September 9, 2008 at Reedley Cemetery, Reedley, CA.

Frey, Irvin Martin
, 89, of Menno Haven Chambersburg, PA died March 6, 2008, in Menno Haven Nursing Center. He was born May 15, 1918, in Chambersburg, PA to David B. and Fannie (Martin) Frey.

His first wife was Helen C. (Lehman) Frey, were married Aug. 31, 1940. She died Feb. 15, 1986. His second wife, Ida G. Frey, of Charlottesville, Va., were married Feb. 28, 1987.

Mr. Frey was a founding member of Rock Hill Mennonite Church, McConnellsburg, PA, and in recent years attended Menno Haven Chapel, Chamberburg, PA.
He was a founding board member of Menno Haven and he helped in the development of the Menno Haven Retirement Community. The original Menno Haven Campus was built on Mr. Frey's farmland.

Survived by his wife and five children, Doris M. Diller of Chambersburg, PA; Darlene F. Martin of Palm, PA; Donald L. Frey of Lancaster, PA; Dr. Edward E. Frey, of Columbus, Ohio, and Richard A. Frey of Evansville, Wis.; one stepdaughter, Donna M. Jarjour of Charlottesville, VA; one stepson, Don E. of Lancaster, PA; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Five sisters, Lista M. Martin and Catherine N. Martin, both of Shippensburg, PA; Miriam A. Horst of Chambersburg, PA; Beulah E. Shank of Marion, PA  and Lois I. Martin of Hagerstown, MD; and one brother, the Rev. Preston Frey of Chambersburg, PA
He was preceded his first wife and parents, in death by one brother, Adin Frey.

Funeral service was March 11, 1008 at Chambersburg Mennonite Church, with the Revs. Jerry Roth and Darrell Baer officiating. Burial was in the Chambersburg Mennonite Cemetery, Chambersburg, PA

90, of Mount Joy, PA died October 16, 2008 at Lancaster General Hospital. He was born 1918 in West Donegal Twp, Lancaster Co., PA to Elias and Fannie Daveler Frey. He was the husband of Mildred L. Risser Frey who died in 1996.

He was a member of Chestnut Hill Mennonite Church, Columbia, PA.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary J. wife of Nevin K. Brubaker of Landisville, PA; Anna L. wife of Elwood B. Hess of Manheim, PA; a son, James Martin Frey of Manheim, PA; eight grand children; ten great grandchildren; eight siblings, Dorothy Frey of Rheems, PA; Erma Schnabel of Souderton, PA; Mary Ritchie of Criders, Virginia, Elias Jr. husband of Mary Frey of Manheim, PA; J. Wilbur Frey of Lancaster, PA; Claude Frey of Elizabethtown, PA and Fannie Lois Frey of Manheim, PA. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Evelyn J. Hess; two grandchildren, Brenda and Ronald Brubaker; four brothers, Ralph, Earl, Harold and Paul Frey.

, 83, of Ephrata, PA died July 13, 2008. He was born Jun 5, 1925 in Clay Twp. Lancaster Co., PA. To Enoch and Anna (Stauffer) Frey. He was married for 62 years to Margaret (Bowman) Frey.

He was a member of the Village Chapel Mennonite Church Voganville, PA.
Survied by his wife, and seven sons, David Frey, Jay, married to Jane (Hauck) Frey, Harold, married to Rachel (West) Frey, Robert Frey, Ronald, married to Lori (Miller) Frey, Linford, married to Janeen (Rhoads) Frey and Brian Frey, six daughters, Ruth Ann, wife of Donald Burkholder, Edna, wife of Ike Weaver, Grace, wife of Tom Wert, Joyce Frey, Gloria, wife of Keith Nissley, and Virginia Martin, a sister, Ruth Frey, 24 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Enoch Frey and two sisters, Anna Frey and Elizabeth Frey.

Funeral service was  July 17, 2008 at Hinkletown Mennonite Church with Pastors Jeffrey S. Horst, Jason J. Steffy and Chester L. Martin will be officiating. Interment will follow in the Hinkletown Mennonite Cemetery, Ephrata, PA

Frey, Vera B. Brubaker
, 90 of Landis Homes, Lititz, PA died November 11, 2008. She was born 1918 in Rapho Twp, Lancaster Co., PA. to Levi and Nora Bucher Brubaker and her stepmother, Anna Siegrist Brubaker. Her husband, J. Harold Frey died in 1995.

A member of Mount Joy Mennonite Church, Mount Joy, PA.  The Frey basement was home base for the Mennonite Youth Fellowship.

Survived by her three children, Harold, married to Barbara Floyd Frey, Mount Joy, PA; Herbert, married to Lucille Hershey Frey, Marietta, PA and Janet, married to John Weber, Ephrata, PA; fifteen grandchildren, thirty-four great grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren; a sister, Anna married to J. Mark Martin, Manheim, PA; and three brothers, Harold married to Virginia Martin Brubaker, Mount Joy, PA; Glenn married to Arlene Snyder Brubaker, Lititz, PA and Raymond married to Ruth Buchen Brubaker, Lancaster, PA. A daughter, Nancy Frey, and two grandchildren, Corinne Frey and Trevor Hershey, preceded her in death.

Memorial Service was November 15, 2008 at the Mount Joy Mennonite Church, with Pastor Joe N. Sherer officiating. Interment was in Kraybill Mennonite Cemetery, Mount Joy, PA

Friesen, Elwin
, 88, of Henderson, NE died there on September 24, 2008 from congestive heart failure. 

He was born October 9, 1919 at Henderson, York Co., NE to Abraham W. and Margaret (Friesen) Friesen.  Abraham was born November 25, 1891 and died November 13, 1984.  Margaret was born March 15, 1893 and died September 9, 1991.

On June 11, 1943 at Milford, Seward Co., NE he was married to Kathryn S. Hershberger, who was born April 4, 1923 and survives.

Surviving are a son, Alan & Cindy Friesen, three daughters, Roma & Phil Epp; Susan & Homer Friesen; and Kathy & Doug Kroeker; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and a sister, Maybelle Janzen.

Three brothers, Dr. Harold Friesen, Dr. Carl Friesen, and Roland Friesen  preceded him in death.

Memorial services were held September 27, 2008 at Bethesda Mennonite Church, Henderson, NE with burial in the adjoining cemetery.

, 99, of Reedley, CA died March 21, 2008 at Reedley, CA from natural causes.  She was born December 19, 1908 at Freeman, SD to Ben C. and Lena (Schrag) Graber.  On August 23, 1939 she was married to Arthur  Friesen, who is deceased.

Surviving are a son, Richard & Dorothy Nickel Friesen, two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a brother, LeRoy Graber.

A son, Delbert Friesen and four siblings, Olivia Deckert, Albena Deckert, Chris Graber, and Ellis Graber preceded her in death.

Memorial services were held April 19, 2008 at First Mennonite Church, Reedley, CA with burial in Reedley Cemetery, Reedley, CA.

Frobish, Luella Mae Zehr
, 96, of Flanagan died there, November 17, 2008 from old age.  She was born March 11, 1912 at Flanagan, Livingston Co., IL to Albert and Ollie (Crumrine) Zehr.  On February 3, 1932 at Peoria, Peoria Co., IL she was married to Thomas Frobish, who died October 30, 1987.

Surviving are children, Marilyn (Fred) Porzelius, Meadows, IL; Melvin (Lorraine) Frobish, Flanagan, IL; Lowell (Florence) Frobish, Auburn, AL; Russell (Dianne) Frobish, Laurel, MD; Paul (Carol) Frobish, Gardner, IL; 17 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, two sisters, Lorraine (Byron) Russell, Dodgeville, WI; and Dorothy (Elwood) Bean, Chenoa, IL; and a sister-in-law, Irene Zehr, Peoria, IL.

Three brothers: Leroy Zehr, Floyd Zehr, and George Zehr preceded her in death.

Luella was a member of Prairieview Mennonite Church, rural Flanagan.  She had worked as a telephone operator, a waitress, and as a CNA at Meadows Mennonite Home and Good Samaritan Home. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and flower gardening.

Memorial services were held November 22, 2008 at Prairieview Mennonite Church, Flanagan, IL with burial in Center Cemetery, Flanagan, IL.

Fry, Betsy W. Yoder

TOPEKA -- Betsy W. Fry, 76, of 6240 S. S.R. 5, died at 8:45 p.m. Monday (March 24, 2008) at home after an extended illness. She had been a resident of the area since 1955.

Friends may call after noon today and all day Thursday at the family home. The funeral service will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the family home. Bishop Wayne Miller and the home ministers will officiate. Burial will be in Hawpatch Cemetery, Topeka. Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, 1003 S. Main St., Middlebury, is assisting with arrangements.

Mrs. Fry was born Aug. 5, 1931, in Haven, Kan., to William D. and Susie (Yoder) Yoder. She married William H. Fry on Oct. 18, 1951, in Haven.

He survives along with two daughters, Waneta (Leo) Miller of Wolcottville and Anna Mae Fry of Topeka; two sons, Elmer (Ruby) Fry and Jerry (Lavera) Fry, both of Topeka; 15 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; six brothers, Amos Yoder of Middlebury, Felty (Ruby) Yoder and Albert (Rosa) Yoder, both of Topeka, William (Lora) Yoder of Syracuse, David (Ida Mae) Yoder of Shipshewana and Merle (Ottie) Yoder of Castalian Springs, Tenn.; and six sisters, Katie Cross of Middlebury, Polly Fry of Fairview, Mich., Anna (Glen) Fry and Edna Miller, both of Topeka, Vera (Mervin) Miller of Ligonier and Ruby (Elmer) Byler of Millersburg.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Andrew and William Fry, both on May 11, 1975; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Mae Fry; six brothers, Daniel, Joseph, Herman, Perry, Ora and Elmer Yoder; and three sisters, Sadie Summerlot, Clara Slabach and Susanna Keim.

Mrs. Fry was a homemaker and a member of the Old Order Amish Church.
