Yoder, Paton
March 9, 1912 - Aug. 3, 2008
GOSHEN -- I was born on a farm about halfway between Goshen and Middlebury, Ind., to Silvanus and Susan (Troyer) Yoder. Since 1912 was a leap year it follows that I missed Feb. 29 by only 9 days. In seeking out my roots I discovered that I was a descendant of the memorable "widow Barbara Yoder," an Amish woman who had lost her husband at sea when she arrived in America in 1741 with 10 children in tow.
I graduated from Goshen College in 1935 and a year later I married Hazel Smucker, my sweetheart from early childhood. To our union were born our five children: Devon (married to Marcia Schrock); James (Phyllis King); Susan (Reid Stempel); Kenneth (Ferne Kilmer); and Kathryn (Ed Martin). All of these were gracious caregivers to us as we came to need such. I leave behind 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, all of whom survive me, along with my wife. She has been my delightful and caring companion for 72 years. I am grateful to her beyond measure for her loyalty and companionship; I charge my children with taking the best of care of her until she joins me in paradise.
I was Silvanus and Susan's youngest child. Rhea, almost 14 years my senior, was the oldest, followed by Ruth (Paul Kortemeier); Jonathan (Fyrne Miller); and Samuel (Ethel Oyer). These, my older siblings, quite naturally became my role models; I followed them to, and through, Goshen College (graduating in 1935) and on to graduate school, receiving my Ph.D. in history from Indiana University in 1941. I taught American history for the next 40 years; three years at Northwestern Junior College (Orange City, Iowa), 10 years at Westmont College (Santa Barbara, California, where I served as academic dean for the last half of the decade), 11 years at Taylor University (Upland, IN); 10 years at Hesston College (Hesston, KS) and six years at Malone College (Canton, OH). At Hesston College I again served as academic dean along with some teaching. During my tenure there we were successful at attaining North Central accreditation, building a new library, and implementing a rather popular and successful two-year nursing program. Between our tenures at Hesston and Malone, we managed to insert a year (1970-71) in which we, Hazel and I, supervised three Study-Service Term units of students in Haiti and Guadalupe for Goshen College. Retirement in 1977, after completing our time at Malone College, brought us back to our "home grounds" in Goshen, Indiana, where we have lived ever since.
I accepted Christ as my Savior at 12 years of age, and after many vicissitudes and not always consistent living patterns have remained a member of the Mennonite Church and follower of Jesus Christ after the pattern of my committed parents. Church membership and participation therein was always important to me. I grew up in the local Clinton Frame (Indiana) congregation; following affiliation there we were members successively at Calvary Mennonite (California), Howard-Miami (Indiana); North Canton (Ohio) and, finally, College Mennonite here in Goshen.
My relation with Indiana University continued well beyond my graduate studies there. In 1967-68 I served as Visiting Professor of History on the IU campus, and soon thereafter the Indiana University Press published my book, Taverns and Travelers; Inns of the Early Midwest. In the course of my many teaching years I also published articles in history journals relating to the early American Midwest.
In my retirement years I turned my attention to my roots, editing and/or writing several books and journal articles relating to the Amish Church in the nineteenth century. They included Tradition and Transition; Amish Mennonites and Old Order Amish, 1800-1900, and (along with Steven R. Estes) Proceedings of the Amish Ministers' Meetings, 1862-1878. My great-grandfather, "Tennessee John" Stoltzfus, Amish Mennonite leader, received my special attention, requiring two volumes. I also wrote a number of journal articles for the Mennonite Quarterly Review and the Pennsylvania Mennonite Heritage relating to the Amish and Amish Mennonites in the nineteenth century. Recently (2007) the Mennonite Historical Bulletin has published my journal article on "Bishop John K. Yoder," of the Oak Grove Mennonite Church, Wayne County, Ohio.
It was only in 2005 that Westmont College took sufficient note of its beginnings to identify me as one of its founders and to present me as one of about 20 such pictorially on a wall of Founders' Hall. I guess they chose to honor me in this way because I was its first dean and remained loyal to the school through its difficult early years (1940-1950).
-- Paton Yoder
Visitation with the family is scheduled for Friday evening, Aug. 8, from 6 to 9 and Saturday afternoon from 1 to 3 p.m. at the College Mennonite Church, Goshen, followed by the memorial service at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Westmont College (Santa Barbara, Calif.), a beloved college where he worked during his earlier years.
