GOSHEN - Doris Glick

1923-2010

PENSACOLA, Fla. - Doris Glick died peacefully in her sleep Friday at Covenant Hospice in Pensacola following a brief illness.

Memorial services were at Northminster Church in Pensacola. A memorial service and spreading of her ashes will take place at a later date at the Memorial Garden at College Mennonite Church in Goshen, Ind.

Doris was a great wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Whether the scent of fresh bread she baked every Friday for her family, or the smile that could light up the world of a niece or nephew, Doris always created an environment of comfort and clarity for those she loved. Beyond those enduring Mom skills, she brought a deep and broad set of philosophical, moral and religious perspectives to provide comfort and guidance for her children and extended family.

Doris always led by example, and a primary investment and pleasure was the relationship she had with her husband, Lester Glick. Mom and Dad brought their experience and expertise together to raise a family and initiate and create various books and programs. They were instrumental in implementing programs at the many churches they joined to improve and enrich the spiritual and practical lives of families in those communities.

Doris was a pillar in the social and spiritual communities she joined. She was dedicated to social justice, advocating with and for the underserved and indigent. Her life was an example to many who cherished her wisdom and single-minded devotion to her beliefs and passion. She was a woman of not only important words, but also a hard worker, transforming those ideals into reality. She inspired many of her younger relatives and friends to independent and original thinking, as evidenced in this obituary by the number of women who kept their original last names.

Doris Glick was born Nov. 17, 1923 in Grantsville, Garrett County, Md., to Harry and Luella Miller (Shetler). She graduated from Goshen College in 1946 with a degree in home economics and nutrition and married Lester Glick in 1947.

Doris is survived by four children, Ron Glick, Dr. Cris Glick (Eddie Guillot Jr.), Priscilla Clark (Lane Holmes) and Byron Glick (Michelle Gast); and eight grandchildren, Chris Glick, Govinda Glick, Daniel Glick, Mathew Puckett (Elizabeth Alegria), Michael Puckett, Megan Puckett (Nathan Glenn), Shane Clark (Dori Clark) and Tina Clark (Ruben Vigil). Doris' surviving brothers are Allen (Jean) Miller, Samuel Miller, and James (Anna) Miller; sister in-law, Mitzi Miller; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brothers, Harold, Clyde, David and Mark Miller.

Despite her great love of flowers, Doris has requested that memorials be sent to Goshen College, attn: Office of Development, 1700 S. Main St., Goshen IN 46526-4724.

Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel, Pensacola, is assisting with arrangements.
