Ray's family meant a lot to him, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed conversation with many people. He will be well-remembered by his many friends and professional acquaintances for his wonderful sense of humor. BLUFFTON, Ohio - Velma Katherine (Emmert) Kingsley, 97, died at 7 a.m. Friday, Dec. 20, 2013, at Frieda House, Bluffton.
She was born Sept. 30, 1916, to the late John and Grace (Plank) Emmert in Topeka, Ind.
On Sept. 1, 1940, she married Leonard D. Kingsley. He passed away June 5, 2012.
Nurturing children in her family life and her teaching career was the passion of her life: to both of these spheres she brought great creativity and enthusiasm. Her early teaching career was interrupted by her whole-hearted embrace of motherhood; she later home-schooled some of her eight children when the family lived in Kupang, Timor, Indonesia.
After her retirement from formal teaching, she hosted families and school groups on "Your Day-Off Farm" in Adrian, Mich., where she shared hobbies, books and animals. Many international students benefitted from her volunteer service teaching English. Velma's dedication in service to others led her to serve as a hospice visitor, and until she was 92 she also visited the "elderly" in nursing homes.
Church and community involvement were important to Velma wherever she lived; she connected with neighbors in the spirit of bringing folks together for fellowship and fun. She built a Peace Chapel on the farm, which was a favorite place to worship in a beloved natural setting.
Horses figured prominently in Velma's life, from the draft horses and the pony shared with her twin sister, Vera, in her childhood, to a long line of horses, which she continued to ride into her 80s.
Velma's love of world travel started with a three-year church related assignment for Leonard and Velma and their seven (soon to be eight) children in Timor, Indonesia, in the 1950s. Other travels took them to Africa, South America, Central America and again to Asia.
Velma will be remembered by numerous friends, neighbors and caregivers for her ready smile, cheerful disposition and unassuming wit.
Survivors include Velma's children, Phillip (Judith) Kingsley of Bluffton, Keith (Gretchen) Kingsley of Elkhart, Ind., Karl (Karen) Kingsley of Elkhart, Sue Ellen Kingsley (Terry Kinzel) of Hancock, Mich., Mitchell (Ann) Kingsley of Bluffton, Jane Steinmetz of Bluffton, Matthew Kingsley of Lone Pine, Calif., and Frederick (Craig) Kingsley of Pewaukee, Wis.; 20 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Velma was preceded in death by four brothers, Roy Emmert, Howard Emmert, Arthur Emmert and Paul Emmert and two sisters, Evelyn Eash and Vera Ulmer.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. March 8, 2014, at First Mennonite Church, Bluffton. The family will be available for visitation before the service at 9:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Heifer International (www.heifer.org) or to First Mennonite Church, Bluffton, Ohio. Online condolences may be expressed at www.chiles-lamanfh.com.

KULA, Hawaii - Stephen Kreider, 64, died on Tuesday, July 23, 2013, at his home in Kula on the island of Maui. He had been diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer 10 months prior to his death.
Stephen was born in Goshen, Ind., on Sept. 20, 1948, the third child of Carl and Evelyn Burkholder Kreider. At the age of three, he moved with the Kreider family to the outskirts of Tokyo, where he attended a Japanese school. Returning to Goshen at age eight, he attended Parkside School, graduated from Goshen High School and Goshen College, and in 1977 earned a master of fine arts degree in photography from Indiana University, Bloomington.
As a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War, he served in New England Baptist Hospital, Boston. In 1971, he married Gretchen Fisher, whom he met at Goshen College.
From 1978 to 1980, Stephen and Gretchen worked and meditated at the Shree Rajneesh Ashram in Pune, India, and were commune members at Rajneeshpuram in Oregon. In 1985, they moved to Hawaii, where they lived first on the Big Island of Hawaii, then on the island of Kauai and after 1995 on Maui. Stephen loved the ocean, swimming and kayaking, trekking in the Himalayas and hiking in Hawaii. He was a committed cyclist. Twice, in August 2011 and August 2012, he raced the Cycle to the Sun, from sea level to the 10,000 foot summit at Haleakala National Park, Maui. Between 2000 and 2006, Stephen served on the board of the Haleakala Waldorf School, which he valued because of its commitment to the freedom of the child.
At all times, Stephen was an artist and was intensely musical. His band, The Backdoor Men, made a great stir at Goshen College during the late 1960s. In Hawaii, Stephen loved Hawaiian music; he mastered the ukulele and loved to sing with his daughters. He also played the Hawaiian steel guitar, which he studied with the renowned Jerry Byrd. Stephen surrounded himself with art in many forms. He loved landscape gardening, photography and music.
In his junior year at International Christian University, Tokyo, he studied Japanese archaeology and aesthetics, which affected him profoundly. For 25 years, he owned Avanti Painting Inc, contracting primarily painting of hotels, condominiums and commercial buildings. Together he and Gretchen Fisher developed their acreage into a secluded place of great beauty.
He is survived by his wife, Gretchen Fisher, of Kula; his daughters Tessa Fisher Kreider and Zena Fisher Kreider of Kula; his mother, Evelyn Burkholder Kreider of Goshen; his brothers, Alan Kreider of Elkhart, Ind., and Thomas Kreider of Indianapolis; his sister, Rebecca Pries, of Cambridge, Mass.; and six nieces and nephews.
A memorial gathering will be held on Sept. 22 at their home, Nahenahe Homestead, on Maui; at a later date a gathering for family and close friends will be held in Goshen.
