Carol graduated from West Liberty-Salem High School in 1971. She graduated in 1975 with a BA in elementary education from Goshen College in Goshen, Ind. It was at Goshen where she met Tim Graber, and they married on June 26, 1976, at Oak Grove Mennonite Church in West Liberty. For one year she taught second grade at Honeyville Elementary in the northern Indiana school district of Westview. She and Tim then began a two and a half year term of voluntary service with Mennonite Central Committee in a rural village in Bolivia. There, in a one-room schoolhouse, she taught elementary children in Spanish.
After MCC, Carol and Tim settled in Tim's home community of rural East Freeman, S.D., to farm on the Graber home place.
Carol loved children and it was clearly manifested through her role as a mother. Her four children were a lifelong priority, as were her grandchildren who came along later. Children are Laura (Dave) Nickel, Lisa (Jason) Kauffman, Karen (Adam) Graber Roth and Tom (Jenna). Grandchildren include Sofiya and Jude Nickel and Eli and Alice Kauffman. She and Tim raised their children while working alongside each other on the family farm. Carol spent many hours working with livestock, especially sows. Her calm and soothing manner showed her affinity for animals. She tended a large garden and enjoyed cooking with and preserving much of its produce. The backyard was her bird sanctuary and she loved feeding, identifying and watching the birds that frequented her feeders.
Carol's strong Christian faith, nurtured from an early age, was an important part of her daily life. When she and Tim settled in South Dakota, she adopted Salem-Zion Mennonite Church as her own. She taught children's Sunday school for more than 30 years, lent her alto voice to several choirs, served as a deacon and on various other committees in the church. Carol valued the greater Mennonite Church and enjoyed representing Salem-Zion as a delegate at national conventions, and recently served on the planning committee of Central Plains Conference.
Freeman Academy also became an important part of her life and received many hours of her time. She led the Auxiliary Committee, taught substitute classes, performed in the Schmeckfest musical and was an active parent. The school's value was made clear to her through the education of her children, all of whom graduated from the school.
Carol enjoyed travel and had a great appreciation for other cultures and people, gained through positive experiences living overseas in college and with MCC. Once her children were old enough to travel, she packed the minivan and navigated in the passenger seat on annual family road trips to places all across the country. Once her children moved away, she visited them as often as she could, including several international trips.
Throughout her life, Carol prioritized relationships. Extension club, book club and her church small group were important parts of her social life. Through regular correspondence she actively maintained friendships from far away and over many years. She enjoyed both reading and writing and showed her love for others by writing carefully crafted heartfelt messages. She befriended many whose needs were often overlooked by others.
Carol was loved dearly by so many. Her absence leaves an empty hole in our hearts and lives, but we are so thankful for the wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend whose life blessed us in so many ways.
Her funeral was held on Thursday, Dec. 4, at 10:30 a.m. at the Salem-Zion Mennonite Church, rural Freeman, with pastors Eric Deckert and Robert Engbrecht officiating. Sherilyn Ortman was organist/pianist with special music by the combined Salem-Zion and Salem Mennonite Mens Choirs accompanied by Mavis Ortman. Pallbearers were Becky Binkley, Betsy Black, Matt Janzen, Nick Janzen, Steve Janzen and Mariell Waltner. Honorary pallbearers were Maria Lichtle, Stan Kirkendall and Terry Kirkendall. Interment was at the Salem-Zion Mennonite Church Cemetery.
