Herald of Truth - Volume XIII, Number 4 - April 1876, Pages 78, 79

Jan. 29th, 3 men perished in a lime kiln near Bainbridge Lancaster Co., Pa., named ABM SHIRES, leaving a wife and 10 children, age 50 years, 4 months 15 days. WM. HENRY STRAYER, single, age 28 years, 3 months 12 days. CYRUS STRAYER, leaving a wife and 2 children, age 26 years, 6 months and 26 days.
Particulars.-- One of the men descended into a lime-kiln to level the stones. He was overcome by the gas. The second descended to help him. He was also overcome, then the third descended he was also overcome. A fourth one was also nearly overcome, thus all three perished. Their funerals took place on the 1st, of February, forenoon in Bainbridge, afternoon in Springville. A large number of persons assembled together to witness the solemn ceremony of burying the remains of the unfortunate men. Two bodies were put into one grave and the other body buried by itself. Many tears were shed, many sympathies were tendered to the bereft ones.

Feb. 13th, in Landisville, Lancaster Co., Pa., of Cancer, internally, Sister ELISABETH KURTZ, aged 37 years, 3 months 26 days. Funeral on the 15th, Text, Isaiah 35:10. Sister Kurtz suffered much pain. She was patient.

Feb. 19th, near Old Line, Lancaster Co., Pa., Bro. JOHN STAUFFER, aged 68 years, 5 months 9 days. Funeral on the 21st, Text, Phil. 1:21.

September 4th, 1875, in McLean Co, Ill., DAVID, infant son of Jacob and Magdalena AUGSPURGER. Services by Joseph Lichty of Canada, Christian Schlagel, and John P. Schmitt, from 1 Cor. 15.

Oct, --- 1875, in Livingston Co., Ill., a daughter of Ferdinand and Maria Schertz, aged 3 days. Sermon by J. P. Schmitt.

Nov. 17th, 75, in Livingston Co., Ill., Bro. PETER SCHMITT, aged 38 years, 4 months and 27 days. He was sick eleven weeks, and he bore his suffering with Christian patience, manifesting to those visiting him a good example. He gave his family and friends a good admonition before his departure. Services by Joseph Gasho, Chr. Schlagel, and Jn. P. Schmitt.

Dec. 20th, 75, in Livingston co., Ill., of the infirmities of age, Bro. ANDREW SCHERTZ, at the advanced age of 80 years, 5 months and 26 days. This aged pilgrim reached his fourscore years; he lived in the fear of God. He went asleep in Jesus, beloved by his children and children's children. Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord. Services by Benj. F. Hamilton, and J. P. Schmitt.
Our aged brother sleepeth
The slumber of the blest,
Unmindful of our sorrowing,
He peacefully doth rest.

Dec. 28th, in Livingston Co., Ill., of the infirmities of age and inflammation of the bladder, Bro. JOHN NEWHAUSER, in his 76th year. Buried in the presence of many relatives and friends the 30th, when appropriate remarks were made by J. P. Schmitt.

Feb. 1st, 1876, in Salisbury Tp., Lancaster Co., Pa., Sister POLLY SAUDER, widow, in the 77th year of her age. Services by Amos Herr.

Feb. 10th, in Woodford Co., Ill., Sister BARBARA NAFFZINGER, at the advanced age of 80 years, 4 months and 16 days, eight days previous to her death she attended meeting; her seat now is vacant, but she will occupy a seat in the heavenly mansions, to which she looked forward with an eye of faith. Services by Christian Rupp, and J. P. Schmitt, from 1 Cor. 15
'Tis said death loves a shining mark,
He seeks the brightest, best,
So he hath laid our sister low-
The loving, loved, and blest.

And when we gather often
Unto the house of prayer,
Ah! then we miss our sister dear,
Her seat is vacant there.

Feb. 18th, in Wayne Co., Ohio, MARY wife of Fredric RAMSEYER, aged 20 years and 21 days. Buried on the 20th at the Amish Mennonite meeting- house. Funeral services by Jonathan Smucker, from Ind. in German and Henry Davidson, in English, from 2 Corinthians, 6:1

Feb. 26th, in Wayne Co., Ohio, MAGDALENA daughter of Gideon and Magdalena SMOKER, [Note: begin page 76] aged 5 months and 8 days. Funeral services by David Z. Yoder, and John Smiley, from John 16:16; and 2 Cor. 5:10.

March 3rd, in Stark Co., Ohio, BARBARA SLONEKER, at the advanced age of 87 years, 3 months and 8 days. She lived in the holy bonds of matrimony 63 years. She leaves 9 children, and 52 grand-children. Funeral services by Chr. Klopfenstein and J. K. Yoder, from John 16:16.

March 9th, in Wayne Co., Ohio, of lung fever, DAVID STUTZMAN, aged 52 years, 6 months and 8 days. Buried the 19th, at the Hoff meeting-house. Funeral services by John K. Yoder and John Smiley, from Isaiah 38:1; and John 5:24.

March 10th, in Wayne Co, Ohio. of lung fever, ELISABETH, daughter of Joseph and Nancy PLANK, aged 17 years, 2 months and 5 days. Buried on the 12th, at the Amish meeting-house. Funeral services by John Smiley, and John K. Yoder, from 1 Peter 1:24, and Rev. 16:15. "Dear sister, don't think of me as in the tomb, For I shall not fear its dark shadows and gloom And I shall not fear though the river be wide, For Jesus will carry me over the tide."

March 17th, in Mifflin Co., Penna., of scarlet fever, EURIEL D., only child of Jacob K. and Nancy ZOOK, aged 9 months and 19 days.
Dear Euriel it is hard to part
With one we loved so well,
But still we feel there is a power,
Our aching hearts can quell.
And yet why should we mourn thy loss
When we know 'tis thy gain
And thou art now at rest with God,
And free from earthly pain?

March 15th, in Woodford Co., Ill., suddenly of hardened lungs, MATTHEW HERR, aged 56 years.

March ---, in Howard Co., Ind., JOHN ZUG, aged 59 years, 3 months and 28 days. Survived by D. L. Miler, and Nobardias Schrocht.

March 9th, in Mifflin Co., Pa., JAMES SHEERER, aged 68 years, 4 months and 12 days.

March 12th, in Mifflin Co., Pa., MARGARET (Peggy) YODER, aged 65 years, 9 months and 12 days. She was a sister of James Sheerer, and a kind- hearted, and peaceable member of the church.

March 12th, Elkhart Co., Ind., of dropsy of the heart, Bro. SIMEON L. MILLER, aged 46 years, 9 months and 5 days. During his suffering he manifested his Christian spirit by patience in affliction. His father, Bishop Levi Miller aged 77 years, of Holmes Co., Ohio, was also at the funeral. He leaves a deeply bereaved wife and 11 children to mourn their loss. Sermon by John Gnagy and John Schlabach.

March 20th, in Blair Co., Pa., MARGARET, daughter of Jacob and Elisabeth EBERSOLE, aged six years, 1 month and 2 days. Herman Snyder officiated on the funeral occasion, Text 2 Kings 4: part of verse 26.

March 7th, in Elkhart Co., Ind., JOHN DOUSMAN, son of Jacob and Susanna Dousman, aged 18 years, 1 month and 10 days. Funeral services by M. E. Grider and J. M. Christophel.

Dec. 20th, 1875, in Somerset Co., Pa., of jaundice, POLLY, daughter of Moses D. and Polly OESCH, aged 2 years, 7 months and 20 days. Funeral services by M. C. Miller and I. Hershberger, from Mark 10:13-16.

March ___, in the Chambersburg congregation, Franklin Co., Pa., Sister LEHMAN, widow, aged 79 years, and 9 days. Thus one by one the aged saints are called home to their everlasting rest.
"Asleep in Jesus! Oh how sweet,
To be for such a slumber meet!
With holy confidence to sing,
That death has lost his venom'd sting."

March 29th, in Washington Co, Iowa, Sister LYDIA MAST, wife of Joseph Mast, aged 49 years, 8 months and 15 days. Sister Mast bore her afflictions patiently. Buried the 30th. Sermon in English and German. Text 1 Cor. 15:35-50.

Farewell Sister, a long farewell,
For we shall meet no more,
Till we are raised with thee to dwell
On Zion's happier shore.

On the 28th, of March, 1875, in Bedminister Twp., Bucks Co., Pa., at the residence of his son David, HENRY LANDIS, aged 80 years, 7 months and 8 days. Buried at Deep Run on the 31st, Text Rev. 7: latter part of 14 v.

He washed his robe and made it white,
In the blood of the Lamb;
To do God's will was his delight,
This is a soothing balm.
The children's loss is his great gain,
The righteous are at rest;
Be faithful and pious remain.
And lie forever blest.
