The following was written by a grandson:
GRAM
"We called her Gram. It was, I am sure, most basically
a term of
endearment, although I am also sure it was an inadequate name
for
grandma. She was in most respects a typical grandmother, one who
readily answered our not infrequent childish requests with whatever
she
had. We could depend on many kinds of baked goodies from her ample
cupboard at most any time we might ask and we asked fairly often,
as I
recall. Some of her grandchildren's warmest memories must surely
be of
those occasions, especially on Sunday evenings when the whole
clan would
gather to test the resources of her cupboard and refrigerator;
they were
invariably ample.
"But there were also other occasions, times when my siblings
or I would
go next door to Gram's house simply to pass the time. Perhaps
it was
more to savor the atmosphere. And if we were of a mind to ask
some
innocent favor, she would typically look up from her piecing or
cross-stitching, gaze deliberately at us through her glasses and
articulate a quiet, yes, to our request.
"Gram was in fact slow and deliberate in most all her
movements and in
her speech as well. She never hurried; she did not know how. It
was
certainly not that she was indolent. Never! For she worked very
hard,
was always engaged insofar as she had health and strength to do
anything. I strongly suspect that this is why she lived so long--until
she was ninety-six.
"There was a meticulousness in all she did; it was a care,
moreover, an
artistic bent that pervaded her work. One of my most vivid memories
of
her is her yearly attack on the weeds in the yard and garden.
She had
an old worn and rounded hoe which she used to dig a small groove
along
the walks and with which she went after the weeds in the hedges
that
bordered the yard; that was no small task even for a younger person.
She did it with care and deliberation at all times.
"And of course there were the flowers; there were always
flowers;
gladiolus in the garden every summer, petunias in the beds along
the
walks, plantings of zinnias and many other kinds I cannot recall.
She
also insisted on planting ornamental trees in appropriate locations
in
the yard, a tendency we did not appreciate, since we had the task
of
mowing around them.
"But her artistic inclination was most notable in her
needlework.
There was, of course, the typical Mennonite assortment of quilts,
some
of which still remain in the family, some of which were sold on
the sale
on that sad day in November of 1984. She also did a significant
number
of cross-stitch pictures. Two of these hang now within my view;
they
are of a jay and a house, the latter with a verse beneath.
"These traits I have named, this meticulousness and deliberation,
were
really, I suppose, an expression of Gram's pride. She exhibited
a pride
both in person and in possession. She took pride in her clothes;
she
was never anything but neat; she took pride in her 1938 Dodge
car;
grandpa had bought it for her and she would not give it up. And
perhaps
most significantly she took great pride in her farm; it was indeed
a
beautiful place; everyone declared it to be so, and she refused
to part
with it as long as she drew breath.
"I would insist that her pride was not a deadly sin; it
was in fact
something which she has bequeathed to her children and grandchildren.
She has somehow put her stamp upon us; it is not alone our memories
of
Gram that have blessed us."
