Gongwer, Eva H. Bixler
Aug. 25,1917 - Aug. 22, 2008
WAKARUSA-
Eva H. Gongwer, 90,
went home to be with the Lord Friday, Aug. 22, in Wakarusa.
Eva was born Aug. 25, 1917, to Samuel and Martha Bixler of Wakarusa. On
Jan. 1, 1938, Eva married Nelson Gongwer, founder of , Nelson's
Port-A-Pit.
She was known to many for having contributed significantly to the
success of the family business back in 1967 when she created the recipe
for Nelson's Port-A-Pit chicken. While her husband worked at inventing
the original "Port-A-Pit" cooking machine, Eva experimented with
different blends of seasonings until finally, after nearly six months
of trial and error, she created the secret sauce that became the
perfect compliment to the cooking process her husband had been
developing.
Nelson and Eva were the perfect husband-wife team, as they combined
their unique talents to form what started out to be a simple hobby of
entertaining guests and church picnics. Eventually, as the demand for
the delicious products grew, that hobby became a full-fledged business
known today as Nelson's. Over the years, as the company continued to
grow, Eva's secret sauce became somewhat of a novelty item as requests
for the recipe were common at company events. Of course, the family
secret was never revealed to the public and remains a critical
component to the success of the
the Midwest.
Although some will remember Eva for her mouthwatering creations in the
kitchen, those who knew her best will remember he for her gracious
hospitality and her love of people. She loved making people smile,
whether she was serving a home-cooked meal to family or friends or
simply handing out a heartfelt hug, Eva was, person who truly enjoyed
bringing joy to others.
Eva was a member of the Nappanee Missionary Church. She is survived by
one son, Dear (Jeanne) Gongwer of Wakarusa one daughter, Janet (Mr.
Lynn; Hahn of Mishawaka; and sever grandchildren, Cindy (Tom; Dawson,
Trent (Bobbi) Gongwer, Randy (Tiffany) Holdeman, Troy (Elissa) Gongwer,
Lisa Reddington, Todd (Traci) Gongwer and Tad (Corina) Gongwer. She is
also survived by her true pride and joy, her 18 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Nelson Gongwer
(June 15, 2004); one brother, Glen Bixler; and one sister, Iva
Hershberger.
