From We Care Program History page:  Some 35 years ago or so, Martin Weber of Atmore, Alabama, went to prison-not as a convict, but as a preacher called to minister the Gospel of Jesus Christ "even unto the least of these." Where others saw only human weeds, brambles, thorns and tares, Martin, by the power of the Holy Spirit, saw soul-fields ripe for harvest. And harvest he did, for almost 20 years as a chaplain with the Alabama Department of Corrections.

Witmer, Paul M., [Reverend]
age 86, went home to meet his precious Lord and Savior face to face on Thursday evening, October 1, 2009. He passed away at home, 1062 Hemlock Circle, Manheim, PA, where he lived with his beloved wife, Mary K. (Martin) Zimmerman Witmer. They were blessed with almost 26 beautiful years together. Paul's first wife, Mabel K. (Myers) Witmer, the mother of his children, passed away November 7, 1982.

Paul was born on February 9, 1923 in West Earl Township to the late Elam W. and Katie (Wenger) Witmer. He was a farmer in Rapho Township for twenty years. He then worked as an auto mechanic, first of all at the former Kreider Motors, Manheim, and then for his son at Witmer Automotive Service, East Hempfield Township, for over thirty years. He was fondly known as "Pappy" by his coworkers.

Paul had a passionate longing for the Lord and for studying the Bible. As a young farmer, this longing led him to rise in the very early hours of the morning to have a time of prayer and Bible study before milking the cows. In 1957 he was ordained as a deacon at Hernley Mennonite Church, Manheim, followed by an ordination to the ministry in 1960. He served as pastor at the Hernley congregation until 1979, when he was called to the Manheim Mennonite Church. He
served there as pastor until his retirement, and he remained actively involved as a Sunday School teacher until his illness. In addition to pastoring, Paul's ministry included many opportunities to preach and teach at other churches for revival meetings and Bible schools. Music was also an important part of his ministry. He loved to sing and enjoyed being part of various male quartets over the years. The highlight of his ministry was singing with his family and traveling to many churches to give family programs. The family continued to sing together every time they were together, even to the end of his life. He remarked recently on one such occasion that he would remember this day in eternity.

In addition to his wife, Paul is survived by his son, J. Richard, husband of Nancy (Myer) Witmer, and six daughters: Mary Ellen Witmer, Mount Joy; Jean, wife of J. Richard Stauffer, State College; Doris, wife of Dale Fahnestock, Manheim; Barb, wife of John Brubaker, Buhl, Idaho; Betty, wife of Scott Kepnes, Merrimack, NH; and Rose, wife of Bob Wichterman, Powder Springs, GA. He is also survived by six stepsons: Carl, husband of Mae (Gerhart) Zimmerman, Richland; Marvin, husband of Bev (Ramer) Zimmerman, Reading; Lester, husband of Erma (Ressler) Zimmerman, New Holland; Roy, husband of Carolyn (Bauman) Zimmerman, Lebanon; Jay, husband of Crystal (Stauffer) Zimmerman, Schaefferstown; and Gary, husband of Julie (Shenk) Zimmerman, Lititz.

Thirty grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, twenty-three step grandchildren, and twelve step great-grandchildren also survive him. Paul is also survived by two brothers: Luke, husband of Dorothy (Boll) Witmer, Mount Joy; John, husband of Evelyn (Weaver) Witmer, Millersville; and three sisters: Arlene, wife of Lester Hertzler, Sligo; Lois, wife of Clarence Good, Croghan, NY; and Grace, wife of David Shenk, Mountville.

In addition to his first wife, Paul was preceded in death by his firstborn daughter, Janet, wife of Elvin Peifer, Grantham, a brother, Roy Witmer, and three sisters, Anna Eshbach, Dorothy Miller, and Jean Bender.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his funeral service at Erb Mennonite Church, 567 West Lexington Road, Lititz, PA on Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at 10:30 AM. Interment in Hernley Mennonite Cemetery, Rapho Township. There will be a public viewing at the Erb Mennonite Church on Monday from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and again at the church on Tuesday morning from 9:30 AM until the time of service.

Those desiring may send contributions in Paul's memory to the Manheim Mennonite Church, Building Fund, 201 West High Street, Manheim, PA 17545 or Global Disciples, 315 West James Street, Suite 202, Lancaster, PA 17603. The Buch Funeral Home, Manheim, PA in charge of the arrangements.

Ray Zehr was born on December 1, 1921 to Peter and Katie Jantzi Zehr and died July 9, 2009 in Hesston, Kansas at the age of 87.  He spent his early years on the family farm near Albany, Oregon.  He was the youngest of nine children and attended a two room country school for six years.  The family attended Fairview Mennonite Church where he was baptized.  In 1932 the family moved to Salem, Oregon where Ray graduated from high school.  He attended one year at Goshen College.

With the start of World War II, Ray was drafted and served in Civilian Public Service at Belton, Montana.  After one year there he joined the military with two other friends.  He was in the army for eighteen months, received a disability discharge, and returned to Oregon.  Soon afterwards he traveled to Ohio to visit a friend where he met his wife, Lois Nussbaum of Columbiana.  They were married June 8, 1947 and returned to make their home in Oregon for the next 40 years.

Ray's career was in banking, starting with several jobs in the mid-Willamette Valley, and finally at Pacific First Federal in Eugene and Springfield, Oregon.  He retired in 1982.  He was a charter member of the Eugene Mennonite Church and the first services were held in the Zehr home.  When the church progressed to the building stage, he helped with its construction.  He was also active in the development of Drift Creek Mennonite Camp near Lincoln City on the Oregon coast,
and served a number of years on the camp board.

Ray's special hobby interest was in cars, especially Model-T Fords and Austin Healey Sprites.  While in Eugene he restored a 1924 Model T and two Sprites. He developed many friendships in this process and started the Eugene Model-T car club, enjoying many local and national touring trips as well as driving for weddings and parades.  He had perennially itchy soles resulting in travel over most of the 48 states, several trips to Europe and a 1997 trip around the world
through India and China.  Ray and Lois moved to Hesston, Kansas in 1987 where he started another Model-T car club. He also kept busy making deliveries for the Mixing Bowl bakery, helping with wheat harvest and Mennonite Disaster Service projects, and starting a new hobby-pottery.

Ray is survived by his wife, Lois Zehr, two children, Nancy Shear of Hesston, Kansas and Dr. Terry Zehr and wife Dr. Tina Svenson of Lake Forest, Illinois; five grandchildren: Lisa and Eric and wife Monique Shear; Kristoffe, Konrad and Kara Zehr, and one sister, Viola King of Hesston, Kansas.
