Hoover, Elsie H.
Kulp

STRATFORD -- Elsie H. Hoover, 52, of Stratford died Saturday evening, July 24, 2010, at her home surrounded by her family. She was under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care Hospice Service.

Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 28, 2010, at North Ridge Church, 1021 W. McMillan St., Marshfield.

Burial will be in the Bethany Mennonite Church Cemetery in the town of Eau Pleine, Marathon County.

Visitations will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Bethany Mennonite Church (located 6 1/2 miles west of Highway 97 on Highway P) and again Wednesday at North Ridge Church in Marshfield, from 8:30 a.m. until time of the service.

Rembs Funeral Home in Marshfield is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Elsie was born at home Oct. 15, 1957, in Kutztown, Penn., to Isaac and Florence (Horst) Kulp.

The Kulp family moved to Indiana in 1964. Elsie started first grade in Pennsylvania, but spent the rest of her elementary years at Union Center and Wakarusa Middle School in Indiana. As a teenager, she was baptized at her home church, Yellow Creek Wisler Mennonite in Goshen, Ind.

Elsie graduated from Northwood High School, where she particularly excelled in art, winning a number of blue ribbons for her artwork.

On Oct. 1, 1978, on a Sunday afternoon that included fall colors, root beer and a spice wedding cake, Elsie married high school classmate and church friend, Ray Hoover.

In August 1979, Elsie and Ray moved to West Lafayette, Ind., where Ray attended Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine. On Jan. 27, 1980, Scott Patrick was born. Katrina Lauren was born on June 23, 1982.

After graduation at Purdue, Ray and Elsie moved to Stratford, where Ray worked for Town and Country Veterinary Clinic for 10 years.

William Paul was born Aug. 27, 1986. Kerra Layne was born June 20, 1989.

In November 1991, Elsie became a minister's wife when Ray was ordained as minister of Bethany Mennonite Church.

Kelsie LaRaye was born Jan. 5, 1992.

In April 1993, Ray quit his job as a vet and he and Elsie started a bulk foods store and produce business. They named the business Maranatha Market. A sign behind the cash register explained, "Maranatha means Our Lord is Coming."

Kristie LaVonne was born Jan. 24, 1995. At this time, Ray and Elsie were running their family business and homeschooling Scott, Katrina and William. As the children grew older, they all participated in the family business, gaining valuable retail experience, and spending hours working together, sometimes long into the night.

In 1997, Elsie began her first battle with breast cancer. Kristie was 1 year old at this time, and Scott was 17. Over a course of months, Elsie underwent chemotherapy and a mastectomy. After this time, she appeared to be cancer-free.

In September 2001, Ray and Elsie sold Maranatha Market to co-pastor Nelson Weaver and his wife Melinda and focused solely on produce and their greenhouse, under the title Hoover's Plants and Produce.

Throughout her years as a stay-at-home mom, Elsie found many avenues for her creative and organizational skills. She wrote many inspirational short stories and essays. She co-authored three cookbooks, The Basics and More Cookbook, The Practical Produce Cookbook and Grandma's Recipes. She also wrote a memoir about her Grandpa and Grandma Horst, entitled Bart and Lydia. In the fall of 2008, before Elsie's cancer recurred, Ray and Elsie took a 30th anniversary trip to the New England states. When Elsie found that her cancer had recurred, she and Ray never ceased to be thankful they had gone on that trip together, before the cancer shadow returned a few months later.

Elsie is survived by her husband Ray; their children, Scott and his wife, Priscilla, of Stratford; Katrina of Goshen, Ind.; William and his wife Rebecca of Stratford; Kerra, Kelsie, and Kristie all at home; and a grandson, Brad.

She is also survived by her parents, Isaac and Florence Kulp of Millersburg, Ind.; three sisters, Mary Ann (Keith) Martin of Sauk Centre, Minn., Virginia (LaVerne) Hoover, Goshen, Ind., and Luella (Larry) Zimmerman of Goshen, Ind.; and a brother, James (Malinda) Kulp of Unity.

Inspirations from Bruce's journal:

"Every day is a gift. Every hour, every moment. The lives of those we have helped shape, as well as brought into this world, we find fulfillment in our lives and a sense of endless "circle of life" in which we are all apart- knowing or unknowing. I can only hope that something in my lifetime of influence of those that remain will help them cope with some of the difficulties they may face in a way that makes their lives happy. God knows that I haven't done everything right. It's a good thing he forgives me so I start each day with a fresh start. Maybe the most important thing I've learned is to be thankful.

I have been lucky and blessed in my life. One never knows where we would be if the circumstances would have been different. So now I just feel good. Good because I can be a part of this family and help make a difference for the better in all of their lives. That gives me a good feeling in the "past the middle" years of my journey of the planet Earth. One thing I ask of God is to give me life; give me the ability to reach out and love my family. Help me to keep the love going from my generation to the next and the next- forever if you please.

I can't think of anything that would give me more pleasure than making their journey pleasant and a little brighter. There are always hard things to face, but if we are grounded in the faith and grounded in the family, we can "run the course" with joy in our heart no matter what."
