Yoder, Joseph L.

Feb. 15, 1910 - Dec. 29, 2010

ELKHART -- Joseph L. Yoder, 100, of Elkhart, has gone to his rest in the loving arms of a heavenly Father, whom he loved with all his heart, mind and soul, on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2010, at Hubbard Hill Estates.

He was born Feb. 15, 1910, in Johnson City, Iowa, to Jacob and Rebecca (Bontrager) Yoder. In 1918, the family moved to a farm in Pigeon, Mich. He came to Elkhart as a young man to work in road construction for his uncle, J.C. Bontrager. In 1935, he moved to Flint, Mich., and married Bethel Attridge that year.

After the death of his wife in 1948, he and his daughter, JoAnne, moved to Elkhart to go into business with his two brothers in Yoder Ready-Mix Concrete Company. In the '60s, they started Yoder Asphalt and opened a ready mix plant in Middlebury, retiring in 1976.

Joe married Joyce E. Manges on Oct. 27, 1950, in a ceremony performed by her father, the Rev. Warren Manges, at Beulah Missionary Church.

Surviving is his wife, Joyce; children JoAnne B. Yoder of Goshen, Julie D. Yoder of Elkhart, Jeffrey M (Ronda) Yoder of Bristol, Jared N (Kim) Yoder of Fishers and Janell D. (Dan) of Oshkosh, Wis.; and grandchildren Benjamin J. (Stacey) Yoder of Nicholasville, Ky., Amy S. Yoder of Fishers, Roman J. Yoder of South Bend and Jori R. Yoder of Bristol.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Monroe, Walter, Maynard and Andrew; and sisters Minerva C. Swartzendruber, Eva Troyer and Sadie Steiner.

Joe was active in Beulah Missionary Church as a Sunday School teacher, served on the board of deacons and board of trustees and served on the board of Elkhart County Youth for Christ for many years. He traveled on several mission trips to Africa, South America and Hawaii.

Joe never met a stranger. He used his listening skills to visit with members of the church who were not able to leave their homes to brighten their day. He was always willing to help and he didn't have to be asked twice. He was named volunteer of the year by the Council on Aging in 2002. Although he was often honored for his service to others, he truly never understood why he was being thanked for doing "what we're supposed to do."

Despite the grief, gratitude for the life he lived and the example he set will, for the entire family, be a legacy forever cherished.

Memorials may be given to Beulah Missionary Church, Bethel College or Missionary Church World Partners.

Viewing will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Beulah Missionary Church, 57595 C.R. 17, Goshen, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Beulah Missionary Church. Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
